Criticizing current interpretations that stress the existential solipsism of the resolute Dasein, the present investigation emphasizes Heidegger’s contribution to the question of the acknowledgment of otherness in Being and Time. The key to uncover the post-metaphysical ethical dimension of the existential analytic is to be found in the theoretical articulation between the phenomenological analysis of anguish and that of the call of conscience. The main argument is that by responsibly hearing to the strange appeal of conscience, resolute Dasein is simultaneously opened to the acknowledgment and welcoming of the other as other.

Commitment And Communication: The Aesthetics Of Receptivity And Historicity, Todd Mei

A general tension in contemporary aesthetics can be described as existing between objective truth claims and historical relativity. The former is generally represented by the Enlightenment approaches and its descendants that ground aesthetic judgment in rationality. The latter characterizes the postmodern appeal to historicity and the exposure of historical prejudice. Following mostly the hermeneutical philosophy of Heidegger, Gadamer, Ricoeur, and Dupré, this paper argues how aesthetic theory, defined by either pole, inadequately accounts for historicity. I intend to discuss Foucault’s and Heidegger’s critical diagnosis of Modernity emphasizing its continuities. Generally speaking, it is possible to argue that in Heidegger philosophical reflection assumes itself as essentially historical, while in Foucault’s case historical investigation assumes itself as an essentially philosophical task. Although recognizing the differences between Foucault’s and Heidegger’s general theoretical approaches, I argue that both consider that, in order to understand who we are today, it is necessary to elaborate a critical understanding of Modernity.
