GREETINGS FROM THE DEAN'S OFFICE!

Since the last edition of The Sig there has been great progress on the construction of the Jerry & Margaret Hodge College of Pharmacy and Rural Health Center. After calling the third floor of the CPP building home for 50 years, it is exciting to see our new home emerge at the corner of North Davis and Caddo with concrete being poured and steel beams hoisted into place with a crane.

Purpose: International medical missions may increase access to medicines and care, but international teams must understand local needs to implement appropriate services. In 2023, a multidisciplinary team from our institution partnered with a nonprofit organization in the barrio of Cienfuegos, Dominican Republic with the goal of strengthening local health services. The primary objective of this study was to identify health-related needs in Cienfuegos from the perspective of community members and local health care workers.

Methods: A qualitative study was conducted as part of a service-learning initiative. After obtaining informed consent, the investigators conducted individual semi-structured interviews facilitated by multi-lingual interpreters. …

"The co-curriculum is intended to run parallel to the formal curriculum and support the development of students’ professional knowledge, skills, abilities, behaviors, and attitudes, including scientific foundation, knowledge application, and practice competencies. Additionally, the co-curriculum can also support proficiency in skills and achievement of competencies that are concurrently taught within the formal curriculum. ACPE evaluates the way programs assess students’ acquisition of knowledge and application of knowledge to practice within co-curricular experiences and especially how they advance the professional development of students within affective domain areas of learning."

Culture influences patients' beliefs and behaviors toward health and illness. As the U.S. population becomes more diverse, a critical need exists for pharmacy education to incorporate patient-centered culturally sensitive health care knowledge and skills into the curriculum. Nursing was the first profession to incorporate this type of learning and training into its curriculums, followed by medicine. Pharmacy has also made great progress to revise curriculums, but inconsistency exists in depth, breadth, and methods across pharmacy colleges. This article addresses important aspects of pharmacy education such as curriculum development, incorporation of educational innovations and techniques into the teaching of patient-centered culturally …
