An experienced ex-pat deminer was working on manual clearance of PTMIBA-III AT mines. The mines were surface laid and in a regular pattern. He had disarmed several that morning and had changed with his No2. He returned after a rest break and approached the next mine in the row. He was witnessed approaching the mine, bending down and it is believed he had a tool in his hand. He reached the mine and his partner reported that he was brushing the sand from the top of the mine when it detonated.

The victim was coming to the end of his shift when he discovered a V-69 and began to expose it for demolition. His partner reported that the victim was racing against the tide to get the job finished, when suddenly the sand gave way and he slid into the hole he was excavating. This may have been because of his heavy weight and the sand getting wetter (softer) as the tide advanced. The mine functioned, bounded and detonated. It is not clear whether it detonated against his lower body or at a distance from it.

This article discusses the debate over the "meaning" of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., relating it to the revision of the "Vietnam syndrome" as it has been played out in recent U.S. armed interventions overseas. Considerable political struggle occurred during the design phase of the memorial over which values the monument should enshrine. Since its construction the memorial has continued to be a focus for controversy about the future direction of U.S. foreign policy and has functioned as a magnet for continuing historical and political attempts to sort out the "lessons" of the second Indochina war. The “informal SOP” at the time allowed operators not to drive the machine out of the mined area at changeover times. In this case, the victim tried to change from one track to the other as his replacement operator and his Team Leader approached. As he changed tracks, he stood on the ground between the tracks and trod on a VS50 AP mine. The VS50 is over-pressure protected (a sustained pressure is needed) and so “resistant” to detonation by flails.

In order to gain access to the PMN mines the victim had to climb over a pile of VS 1.6 (scatterable anti-tank mines). When he jumped down from the tank mines, he landed on three PMNs. This was inferred because three craters were found afterwards. It is thought extremely unlikely that PMNs would sympathetically detonate, so the victim’s colleagues thought it most likely that he landed with some of his weight on all three.

Social workers have sometimes seen war as part of a larger system and as linked to other forms of violence or social evil. This article considers three kinds of analysis which identify different systems (capitalism, patriarchy, and exterminism), see the links in different ways, and lead to different practical conclusions. Each perspective is examined in terms of its capacity to explain the phenomena it describes and to identify a social change strategy that can eliminate them. This thesis investigates the impact of Khomeiniism on the Shi'ites of Iraq. Specifically it seeks to determine whether the rise of Khomeiniism in Iran inspired Iraq's Shi'ite majority to rise against the Ba'athist leaders of Iraq with the object of establishing an Islamic Republic. The paper focuses on the political activities of the Iraqi Shi'ites from Ayatollah Khomeini's rise to power in Iran in February 1979 to the beginning of hostilities between Iraq and Iran in September 1980.
