HPD Articles
PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of visual adaptation to orientation-dependent optical blur on meridional contrast sensitivity function in artificially imposed astigmatism.
METHODS: The study adopted a top-up adapt-test paradigm. During the blur adaptation process, the 18 non-astigmatic young adult participants were briefly presented with natural scene images (first trial, 10 minutes; subsequent trials, 6 seconds). Contrast sensitivities for horizontal and vertical gratings at spatial frequencies ranging from 1 to 8 cycles per degree (cpd) were measured immediately before and after adaptation to +3.00 diopters cylinder (DC) with-the-rule or against-the-rule astigmatism. Meridional anisotropy was measured to quantify the contrast sensitivity difference …

Access To Eye Care Before And After Vision Loss: A Qualitative Study Investigating Eye Care Among Persons Who Have Become Blind, Tosha Zaback, Stephanie Lam, Joan Randall, Teresa Field, Mitchell V. Brinks
The Qualitative Report
Navigating access to eye care requires that patients recognize the need for screening and care, employ limited financial and social resources, manage complex health insurance policies, and access specialty clinical care. We investigated the experience of patients through the progression of vision loss to blindness, utilizing qualitative methods. We conducted structured telephone interviews with 28 persons with blindness throughout Oregon. Utilizing closed and open-ended questions, we explored patient experience on the events preceding avoidable blindness. Coding for emergent themes was conducted independently by two researchers using a constant comparative method. Participants described important barriers to accessing eye care: at the …
Investigation Of The Prevalence Of Receded Near Point Of Convergence In School-Aged Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Lorig Sildiryan
Investigation Of The Prevalence Of Receded Near Point Of Convergence In School-Aged Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Lorig Sildiryan
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
PURPOSE: The intention of this study was to determine if there was an association between receded near point ofconvergence (NPC) and diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in school-agedchildren as compared to neuro-normal children. Differences in accommodative amplitude were investigated as well.
METHODS: This retrospective study was done by analyzing the data from examination records of fifty school-agedchildren between the ages of seven and seventeen. Twenty-five children in the experimental group withADHD were age and gender matched to twenty-five neuro-normal children in the control group. The average of each patient’s NPC break and accommodative amplitude values were used to conduct a …
Effect Of Aflibercept On Macular Retinal Layers And Peripheral Non Perfusion In Subjects With Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy, Swetha Bindu Velaga
Effect Of Aflibercept On Macular Retinal Layers And Peripheral Non Perfusion In Subjects With Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy, Swetha Bindu Velaga
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: The relation between UWF fluorescein angiography (FA) and retinal non-perfusion were studied previously. The relationship between retinal thickness and retinal non-perfusion in subjects with diabetic retinopathy has not been studied using SD-OCT and UWF. Thus, in this current study we used SD-OCT to visualize the individual layers of retina and to evaluate whether the extent of non-perfusion is correlated with macular retinal layer thickness in subjects with PDR with no diabetic macular edema.
Methods: In this prospective longitudinal multicenter, randomized study a total of 36 eyes of thirty six subjects were included in final analysis. Subjects with any history …
Practice Makes The Deficiency Of Global Motion Detection In People With Pattern-Related Visual Stress More Apparent, Jana Wegrzyn
Practice Makes The Deficiency Of Global Motion Detection In People With Pattern-Related Visual Stress More Apparent, Jana Wegrzyn
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Pattern-related visual stress (PRVS) refers to the perceptual difficulties experienced by some individuals when exposed to high contrast striped patterns. People with PRVS were reported to have reduced sensitivity to global motion at baseline testing and the difference disappears at a second estimate. The present study was to investigate the effect of practice on global motion threshold in adults with and without PRVS. Methods: A total of 101 subjects were recruited and the Wilkins & Evans Pattern Glare Test was used to determine if a subject had PRVS. The threshold to detect global motion was measured with a random dot …

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the long-term efficacy of supraciliary micro-stent implantation in combination with phacoemulsification in the treatment of mild-moderate primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: Retrospective data of patients previously enrolled in the “Study of an Implantable Device for Lowering Intraocular Pressure in Glaucoma Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery” (COMPASS trial), in which patients with mild-moderate POAG had undergone either cataract surgery alone or cataract surgery combined with implantation of a supraciliary micro-stent, were collected. Eligible patients had since exited the trial and had 5-8 years of postoperative data available. The primary outcome measure was …

Prevalence Of Vitreomacular Traction In Patients 40 Years Of Age And Older, Julie Rodman
Prevalence Of Vitreomacular Traction In Patients 40 Years Of Age And Older, Julie Rodman
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Vitreomacular traction (VMT) is a condition characterized by an incomplete posterior vitreous detachment resulting in traction on the macula and decreased visual acuity. The process of vitreomacular traction can lead to a number of maculopathies including cystoid macular edema, epiretinal membranes, and macular holes. VMT is more common in patients over 40 years of age; however no population-based studies documenting the prevalence of VMT in this age group has been published. Purpose: The current study was undertaken to evaluate the prevalence of vitreomacular traction syndrome in the population aged above 40. Clinical examination does not adequately illustrate the extent of …
Ocular Sensory Dominance And Viewing Distance, Karen Squier
Ocular Sensory Dominance And Viewing Distance, Karen Squier
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Abstract Purpose: It is not clear as to whether sensory dominance is affected by test distance. Jiang et al previously reported that that the sensory dominant eyes may be affected by refractive error; however this study was done at a near distance only (60 cm). In this study, we investigated the effect of two different test distances (near, 60 cm vs distance, 6 meters) on the laterality of ocular dominance. Methods: Ocular sensory dominance was quantified in 60 subjects with a technique that involves the dichoptic presentation of a Mondrian noise and a Gabor patch. The threshold to detect the …
Comparison Of Three Clinical Tests Of Accommodation To Hofstetter's Norms To Guide Diagnosis And Treatment, Marc Brian Taub
Comparison Of Three Clinical Tests Of Accommodation To Hofstetter's Norms To Guide Diagnosis And Treatment, Marc Brian Taub
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Purpose. It has been documented previously that the push up (PU) and pull away (PA) methods overestimate accommodative amplitude (AA), while the minus lens-to-blur (MLB) method underestimates it. It also has been shown that the PU and PA methods produce similar results. We sought to compare data obtained from these three clinically used methods to determine AA in children and young adults with base-line normative data predicted by Hofstetter.
Methods. Ninety healthy subjects (mean 11.7 years, range: 6-36 and 50F/40M), split into two groups, children (mean 9.8 years, range: 6-13 and 38F/22M) and young adults (mean 25.5 years, range: 21-36 …

Relationship Between Ocular Sensory Dominance And Stereopsis, Raheela Saeed Ali
Relationship Between Ocular Sensory Dominance And Stereopsis, Raheela Saeed Ali
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Purpose: It is unknown whether individuals with two balanced eyes show quicker response and lower threshold in fine stereoscopic detection. Previous methods to measure ocular dominance were primarily qualitative, which do not quantify the degree of dominance and show limitation in identifying the dominant eye. In this study, we aimed at quantifying the difference of ocular strength between the two eyes with ocular dominance index (ODI) and studying the association of ocular balance between the two eyes with stereoscopic detection. Methods: Stereoscopic threshold was measured in thirty-three subjects. Stereopsis was measured with random dot stimuli. The minimal detectable disparity (Dmin) …

Global Summation Of Radial Frequency Patterns And The Effect Of Sudden Onset Glare On Shape Discrimination, Edgar Ekure
Global Summation Of Radial Frequency Patterns And The Effect Of Sudden Onset Glare On Shape Discrimination, Edgar Ekure
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
ABSTRACT Global summation of radial frequency patterns and the effect of sudden onset glare on shape discrimination The purpose of this study was to provide evidence of global pooling around the circumference of the Radial frequency (RF) pattern, and to study the effect of sudden onset glare on shape discrimination. The RF stimuli were generated by the amplitude modulation of the radius of a circle which deforms them from circularity, while the cross sectional luminance profile was the fourth derivative of Gaussians (D4). The amplitude of the stimuli determines how distinct the pattern is and thus measures the degree of …
