PURPOSE Cerebral vascular accidents (CVA) are a leading cause of cognitive impairment in the United States, and 80% of CVA survivors experience new or worsening impairment (Knight-Greenfield et al., 2019; Zhang et al., 2021). Functional cognition is vital to an individual’s participation in occupations that are necessary and meaningful to them. Occupational therapy practitioners play a unique role in addressing functional cognition through intervention planning and implementation. The purpose of this study is to understand the most effective occupational therapy interventions addressing functional cognition in older adults post CVA.

Background: Hospital readmissions remain prominent in health care. Functional, cognitive, and environmental factors predict hospital readmissions but may not be thoroughly measured or addressed prior to discharge.

Method: In this cross-sectional study, people hospitalized with chronic conditions completed measures of self-care function, functional cognition, occupational competence, and environmental impact. They also participated in a phone call or medical records review to identify hospital readmissions within 30 days of discharge. In a group session, occupational therapists who work in acute care completed acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility measures for the standardized assessments administered to hospital participants.

This project aims to develop and educate occupational therapists on functional cognition screening tools and interventions in an inpatient setting. This program development is intended to improve occupational therapist evaluation processes at Banner Baywood Facility to include cognitive components and improve the interdisciplinary approach to treating cognitive deficits amongst other professionals, especially speech pathologists. The implementation of this program development provided the therapist with tools and resources vital for determining the disposition and level of independence for medication management/bill paying upon discharge. Purpose: An estimated 5.3 million Americans are living with a permanent disability due to having a traumatic brain injury (TBI) (CDC, 1999). A common deficit seen in this population includes impaired functional cognition, which is the ability to use and integrate thinking and processing skills to complete complex instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) (Giles et al., 2017). In this Opinions in the Profession article, we aim to highlight the distinct importance of functional cognition as an assessment and intervention priority in children. In this paper, we use the population of critically-ill children as a specific case example. These pilot case studies investigated the effectiveness of the Functional Cognitive Activities for Adults with Brain Injury: A Sequential Approach (FCA) in generalizing functional cognitive skills across meaningful occupations for adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI). This quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design consisted of two participants with TBI. Both participants received occupation-based intervention sessions twice a week and equaled a total of 14 sessions each. For pretest, the two participants were given three assessments to track changes with aspects of functional cognition and engagement in occupations: the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), Kohlman Evaluation of Living Skills (KELS), and Goal Attainment Scale …
