Perceptions And Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Hispanic College Students, Racquel Vera Dec 2013

Perceptions And Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Hispanic College Students, Racquel Vera

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is recognized as a serious, growing problem on college campuses. IPV rates among college students exceed estimates reported for the general population. Few studies have examined the impact of IPV among the Hispanic college student (HCS) population or explored how HCSs perceive and experience IPV.

Focusing on young adults (ages 18 to 25 years), this mixed methods study was designed to explore the perceptions and experiences of IPV focusing on levels of victimization and perpetration in relation to gender role attitudes and beliefs, exposure to parental IPV, acculturation, and religiosity. A sample of 120 HCSs was …

Assessing Quality Outcomes In A Behavioral Oncology Program: Capstone Project, Elizabeth M. Archer-Nanda

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

The landscape of cancer care has changed dramatically over the past several decades. An illness that was once often fatal, now represents both an acute life threatening illness and a chronic condition. While there have been tremendous advancements in the treatment of the physiological aspects of cancer, management of related psychosocial and emotional issues have not seen this same progress. Limited information exists related to both the evaluation and outcome metrics associated with the screening and management of psychiatric sequelae after referral to specialized psychiatric services in cancer patient populations. This capstone project focused on (a) implementation of consistent use …

Hand Hygiene Perceptions Of Student Nurses., Brittany Berger Dec 2013

Hand Hygiene Perceptions Of Student Nurses., Brittany Berger

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Compliance with hand hygiene is widely recognized as the most important factor in preventing transmission of infection to patients in healthcare settings (Haas and Larson, 2007). Hand hygiene dramatically decreases the potential pathogens on hands and is considered the first measure for decreasing the risk of transmitting organisms to patients, healthcare professionals, and family members. Noncompliance with hand hygiene practices has been shown to increase healthcare-associated infections, costing hospitals $35.7-$45 billion each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2012). Education about hand hygiene starts in school and should transfer into the real world of nursing. The purpose of …

Exploring Neonatal Intensive Care Nurses’ Affective Responses To Providing End-Of-Life Care, Stephanie Lynn Lewis Dec 2013

Exploring Neonatal Intensive Care Nurses’ Affective Responses To Providing End-Of-Life Care, Stephanie Lynn Lewis

Doctoral Dissertations

Significance. The Joint Commission established standards to evaluate comprehensive end-of-life infant care and the positive outcomes of such care are well documented. However, findings from multiple studies conducted over the last decade indicate that end-of-life care in the neonatal intensive care unit is not provided consistently or holistically to all dying infants. Because nurses are the healthcare professionals most often responsible for providing this care, anything that detracts from their ability to provide it, including their own affective responses, needs to be addressed.

Aim. The purpose of this study was to explore—through lived and told stories—the affective, interactional, and …

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Debriefing Methods In High Fidelity Simulation In A Nursing Baccalaureate Program, Jihad Jawad Kadhim

Nursing Master Theses

The experiential learning process is a key concept in gaining and analyzing knowledge, which involves participation in those experiences. In nursing education, these experiences can occur through high-fidelity simulation. The most important component of this learning process is the post-experience critical analysis or debriefing. During the debriefing phase, students must reflect upon the experiences, identify key points, and discuss the main concern related to patient care. The debriefing phase helps students to be able to develop and refine knowledge and experiences. Methods of debriefing include verbal feedback or video-assisted verbal discussion that allows students to reflect and discuss on what …

The Experiences Of Women Entering Methadone Treatment For Opioid Use: An Interpretive Phenomenological Inquiry, Melissa Mae Rubio

Theses and Dissertations

The United States is facing a momentous public health problem of prescription and illicit opioid use among women. Traditionally in health literature women have received less attention than men and this is especially true with regard to drug use. In terms of recovery from opioid use, treatment centers that use methadone as a pharmaceutical replacement for illicit opioids have been present in the US for decades, and women have been enrolling in treatment since its inception. However, there is little in the literature about the characteristics of these women, why they choose methadone treatment, and what their experiences are while …

Exploring Self-Efficacy And Stress Of Senior Nursing Students Who Participate In Progressive Simulation., Kaitlyn Nora Luckey-Smith

Undergraduate Honors Theses

According to Bandura (1994), self-efficacy is defined as "the belief in one’s capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required in managing prospective situations" (quoted by Pajaras, 1996, p. 543). Self-efficacy has long been theorized to increase job retention and success after graduation from a nursing program. In this study, the researchers explored whether high fidelity simulation during the senior semester of nursing school increases perceived self-efficacy among nursing students. We also evaluated the impact of stress levels on perceived self-efficacy. The study surveyed 135 senior BSN students from both traditional and accelerated programs a Southeastern Tennessee University …

Assessing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists’ Attitudes Toward And Barriers To The Use Of Evidence-Based Anesthesia Practice, Laurie E. Parkman

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Evidence-based practice is the integration and synthesis of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values. Use of evidence-based practice decreases variability in care and improves patient outcomes. This research project assessed variables that inhibit the adoption of evidence-based practice into individual CRNAs’ practice. Ninety-two CRNAs in Georgia participated in an email survey to assess attitudes and perceived barriers to evidence-based practice. Attitudes toward evidence-based practice were assessed with the Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (EBPQ), and perceived barriers to the use of evidence-based practice were assessed with the BARRIERS scale. A Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was computed to assess …
