Provider And Staff Education To Improve Health Care For The Lgbtq+ Population, David Segel

Abstract:

Purpose: The LGBTQ+ population makes up ~10% of the total population of the world. In the U.S., Vermont has the highest per capita LGBTQ+ population out of any other state. This population is at high risk for numerous health disparities and discrimination by providers. The disparities include higher rates of STI’s, substance use, mental health diagnoses, domestic violence, sexual and physical assault, and lower rates of routine cancer screenings. These can be mitigated by accepting and knowledgeable providers.

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an online educational module about LGBTQ healthcare topics for primary care providers in Kentucky. The study focused on the changes in knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy in topics related to LGBTQ patients.

METHODS:

This study was a one-group pre/post intervention design to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and self- efficacy of providers regarding primary care topics for the LGBTQ community before and after completing a training module on LGBTQ healthcare topics.
