Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of assaultive and coercive behaviors that includes the threat or infliction of physical, sexual, or psychological abuse that is used by perpetrators for the purpose of intimidation and control over the victim. The lived experience and meaning of domestic violence in Puerto Rican pregnant women has not been well researched. Amputation of a limb is a traumatic and disabling condition that impacts the lives of people worldwide. Trauma remains the leading cause of major limb amputation, second only to Diabetes Mellitus and dysvascular complications (Ziegler-Graham, MacKenzie, Ephraim, Travison, & Bookmeyer, 2008). Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as an abnormal glucose tolerance of variable severity with onset or first recognition during pregnancy and usually disappearing immediately after delivery. Women diagnosed with GDM are at high risk for adverse maternal and neonatal health outcomes such as hypertension, birth trauma, stillbirth, obesity, perineal lacerations and higher rates of cesarean section. The prevalence of GDM has recently increased two to three-fold worldwide. The global refugee crisis has reached epic proportions. Statistics from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR, 2016) reported that in 2015 a record 65.3 million people worldwide, or 39,976 people per day, were displaced, either within their native countries or as asylees and refugees. Afghanistan, from 1980-2014, was the country with the largest number of outgoing refugees and it now ranks third in the world. At the opposite end of the continuum the United States remains the primary host country for refugees, asylees, and resettled refugees from all countries, including Afghanistan.
