Resilience And Coping In The Adolescent And Young Adult With Type 1 Diabetes, Debra L. Messinger

There is a need to understand the roles coping strategies play in enhancing resilience in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes between the ages of 18-30. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between and among positive, protective coping strategies (courageous coping), negative coping strategies (defensive coping), and resilience. The Resilience in Illness Model (Haase, Kinter, Monahan, & Robb, 2014) was the theoretical model which guided this research.

While current literature identifies variables such as demographics, parental monitoring, and family functioning and their association with glycemic control in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus, there has yet to be sufficient evidence identifying and supporting the relationships between the level of maternal monitoring and adolescent psychological wellbeing. The purpose of this scholarly project was to assess whether higher levels of maternal monitoring of diabetes management practices was associated with fewer adolescent depressive symptoms and higher adolescent quality of life. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate student feedback of the 2015 Lifelines Suicide Prevention Program at Jessie Clark Middle School. Student feedback was examined by assessing students’ knowledge of suicide, attitudes toward suicide, knowledge of when and from whom to seek help if feeling suicidal or told by a friend that they are suicidal, and impressions of the educational presentation following participation in the Lifelines Suicide Prevention Program.

Reducing preoperative anxiety for adolescents facing spinal fusion surgery for the treatment of scoliosis has significant implications for clinical practice and patient outcomes for this specific population. The reality of a pending surgery creates a difficult, uncomfortable, and exhausting state of being that can lead to increased postoperative pain, sleep disturbances, and maladaptive behaviors. This final capstone project inquiry report presents three manuscripts which focus on the reduction of preoperative anxiety in adolescents facing spinal fusion surgery.
