A Community-Based Education On Cardiovascular Diseases Among Vietnamese Buddhist Nuns, Uyen N. Nguyen Jan 2021

A Community-Based Education On Cardiovascular Diseases Among Vietnamese Buddhist Nuns, Uyen N. Nguyen

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Background: According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death (31%) worldwide. Out of those cases, 85% are due to heart attack and stroke. Hypertension is among the most modifiable risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Since Vietnamese Buddhist nuns have diets high in salt, this makes them at higher risk for hypertension and CVDs.

Purpose: This educational project aims to improve cardiovascular health knowledge among Vietnamese Buddhist nuns in the greater Seattle area by implementing culturally tailored community-based health education programs virtually via phone.

Methods: A community-based educational …

Hypertensive Management For African American Patients, Aleksandrya Bracey-Asiedu Jan 2018

Hypertensive Management For African American Patients, Aleksandrya Bracey-Asiedu

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Background: The rates of angioedema amongst African American patients using angiotensin- converting- enzyme- inhibitors (ACE-I) are five times greater than non-African American counterparts (01.-07 percent vs. 0.5-3.5 percent). Although ACE-I agents are widely prescribed, they have less therapeutic control in hypertension amongst this group of patients and high incidences of life threating side effects.

Methods: The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to assess provider knowledge related to established guidelines from the Joint National Committee (JNC) on hypertension management, as well as their knowledge of the side effects of ACE-I for African American patients. A pre …

Hypertension: Enhancing Lifestyle Management Through Patient Education And Pender’S Health Promotion Model, Katherine Holcomb Jan 2017

Hypertension: Enhancing Lifestyle Management Through Patient Education And Pender’S Health Promotion Model, Katherine Holcomb

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background: Uncontrolled hypertension is a significant problem in the United States with 46% of hypertensive adults not achieving adequate blood pressure control. Inadequately treated HTN results in increased risk of renal disease, cardiovascular disease, and associated mortality. Interventions aimed at improving blood pressure control have targeted providers, patients, or a combination of providers and patients. Methods: The objective of this project was to enhance lifestyle management of patients with uncontrolled hypertension as measured by patient self-report in post-discharge interviews. The intervention incorporated education for patients on lifestyle management recommendations for hypertension as well as health promotion strategies inspired by Nola …

Educational Intervention For Identification Of Metabolic Syndrome (Icd-10 E88.81): Presentation Of A Toolkit For Providers And Staff In Two Primary Care Settings, Sadie Russell

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Metabolic syndrome plays a vital role in present-day primary care. The ICD-10 diagnostic coding for this set of symptoms more comprehensively identifies patients with increased risk of cardiovascular events and comorbidities. Metabolic syndrome affects one-third of adults in the US and is defined as the presence of three of the following characteristics: abdominal obesity, hypertension, elevated triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein, and elevated fasting plasma glucose. Proper screening for metabolic syndrome can identify complex patients before conditions like hypertension or type II diabetes develop. Management of metabolic syndrome emphasizes prevention and prioritizes lifestyle modifications as first-line treatment. Despite strong evidence supporting …

The Blood Pressure Effect Of The Addition Of The Dash Diet And Exercise To The Treatment Plan Of Both Pre-Hypertensive And Hypertensive Rural Adults, Marian Michel Jan 2013

The Blood Pressure Effect Of The Addition Of The Dash Diet And Exercise To The Treatment Plan Of Both Pre-Hypertensive And Hypertensive Rural Adults, Marian Michel

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Hypertension is a significant problem in the United States. This is especially true of rural populations who have diets high in saturated fat and sodium and low in fruits, vegetables and potassium. Furthermore, research has shown that a large number of rural residents do not engage in regular physical activity. These lifestyle characteristics have been associated with increased blood pressure and the risk for the development of cardiovascular disease. Conversely, adoption of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and exercise has been associated with decreases in blood pressure in pre-hypertensive/hypertensive patients. Purpose: The purpose of this project was …
