Improving Vaccination Uptake In The Latinx Community Through Standardized Outreach, Vanessa M. Arteaga
Master's Projects and Capstones
Vaccine hesitancy during the COVID-19 pandemic has been an issue in the Latinx and Black community since the initial discussions of the emergency use of the experimental Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. The aim of this project is to standardize the patient outreach process to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Patients at a community clinic in Oakland have expressed hesitance of the COVID-19 vaccine. They also exhibited increased frustration with the staff who are contacting them to schedule vaccine appointments and provide information. This resulted in refusal of the vaccine and less than desirable number of vaccine appointments. The objective of this …

Preeclampsia In African America Women, Breanna Shoultz, Qweita Eastman, Taylor Maynor, Konstanz Ewing
Symposium of Student Scholars
Background: Every year in the U.S., there are 700 pregnancy related deaths that occur, with ⅔ of those deaths being preventable. African American women are 3-4% more likely to die of pregnancy related complications, mainly preeclampsia, than any other population. Preeclampsia is related to cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, which Black women are more at risk for. Objective: This systematic review will explore how preventative techniques such as the use of diuretics and physical activity during pregnancy will decrease the risk for preeclampsia in African American women compared to untreated preeclampsia complications that affect mortality rates upon delivery. …
Implementing Dysphagia Screenings In Stroke Patients, Meredith Buller
Implementing Dysphagia Screenings In Stroke Patients, Meredith Buller
Scholars Week
Dysphagia screenings are important to be done for all stroke patients in order to prevent aspiration, pneumonia, and other complications. All patients should be screened regardless of severity of stroke. Many policies outline that all patients should be screened, but many floors are not implementing the policy on all patients. This article reviews research associated with dysphagia screenings and how to properly perform one. Dysphagia screenings should be performed on all stroke patients at the hospital to achieve the best outcomes post-stroke.
Keywords: Stroke, aspiration, screening, dysphagia

Challenges In Conducting Online Survey Research Of The Relationship Between Unit-Level Perceived Team Trustworthiness And Clinical And Operational Outcomes, Nancy Ballard, Lynn Varagona, Rob Stilson, Kimberly Knotts, Joan Sacerio
Faculty Articles
When conducting online survey research, obtaining an adequate response rate in order to have meaningful, reliable data can be challenging. In our study examining hospital unit-level data, a 40% response rate was needed to adequately reflect the degree to which unit staff perceived one another as trustworthy. In addition, approximately 150 units were needed to analyze the relationship between perceived trustworthiness and selected operational and quality outcomes.
In spite of following best practices for survey research (e.g., careful communication planning, short survey length) in a multi-hospital study system, most of the units’ response rates were inadequate to include the units …

Nursing Faculty Scholarship
Problem: With growing evidence of the benefits of physical activity and risks associated with physical inactivity, there has been increased focus on implementation of policy, standards, and evidence-based interventions to promote physical activity of Americans. In response to Hardin County physical activity statistics, national health goals, and as part of the Ohio Maternal Child Health (MCH) activity/nutrition grant, an innovative family bike program was developed and implemented in Summer 2018. Providing education and practice on safe biking, bike maintenance, and nutrition as well as providing safe bike equipment may decrease barriers to biking and increase rates of bicycling and, subsequently, …
Pain Management In Nursing Homes, Sachin Shrestha
Pain Management In Nursing Homes, Sachin Shrestha
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Background: Pain is a leading cause of disability and a major contributor to health care costs. Over 85% of patients in nursing homes report pain on a daily basis (CDC, 2016). The rescheduling of hydrocodone to schedule II created an unprecedented challenge for physicians to write a triplicate prescription for patients in the nursing homes who required hydrocodone to manage pain. To circumvent the problem, one nursing home used Buprenorphine Transdermal System (BTDS) for pain management, which is a schedule III opioid analgesic that does not require the triplicate. Design and Method: A pre- and post- intervention design was utilized …

Sms-Text To Improve Medication Compliance Among Hypertensive African-Americans, Daytral Brown
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Background: Hypertension, the second leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), affects approximately 40% of African-Americans (Mansyur, Pavlik, Hyman, Taylor, & Goodrick, 2009). One well-known barrier to hypertension management among African-Americans is poor medication compliance (Ephraim et al., 2014; Solomon et al., 2015). The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effect of SMS-text messages on antihypertensive medication compliance and hypertension knowledge among hypertensive African-Americans with a known history of antihypertensive medication noncompliance. Methods: African-Americans (n=25), with a known history of hypertension and medication noncompliance, received 12 twice weekly SMS-text messages relating to hypertension knowledge and medication compliance. A …

Development And Psychometric Properties Of A Prostate Cancer Knowledge Scale For African American Men, Otis L. Owens, Abbas S. Tavakoli, Theda Rose, Nikki R. Wooten
Faculty Publications
African American men have the highest prostate cancer-related mortality nationally. In response to this disparity, targeted interventions are emerging to enhance African American men's prostate cancer (PrCA) knowledge to ensure they are equipped to make informed decisions about PrCA screening with health-care providers. African American men's PrCA knowledge has been measured inconsistently over time with limited psychometric evidence. The factor structure of this construct in African American men is relatively unknown. This study describes the development and psychometric evaluation of an 18-item Prostate Cancer Knowledge Scale among 352 African American men. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted using weighted least …

Reexamining Overuse Of Frequent Observation For New Admissions On Psychiatric Units To Increase Nurse/Patient Engagement, Samuel Novela
Reexamining Overuse Of Frequent Observation For New Admissions On Psychiatric Units To Increase Nurse/Patient Engagement, Samuel Novela
Master's Theses
People in California who suffer from mental health conditions are often admitted involuntarily to hospitals on 72 hour psychiatric evaluation holds if they are deemed imminently dangerous to themselves, or others, or are gravely disabled. Observational patient safety checks are performed and based on patient acuity and hospital standards. Variations exist among different clinical settings with regard to best practices and the patient subpopulations that may warrant less frequent safety checks. Nurses experience different levels of satisfaction with regard to frequency of safety checks because there is no national consensus on which subsets of patients may require them. A senior …

INTRODUCTION: The need to be able to assess collaborative practice in health care teams has been recognized in response to the direction for team-based care in a number of policy documents. The purpose of this study is to report on further refinement of such a measurement instrument, the Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration Scale (AITCS) first published in 2012. To support this refinement, two objectives were set: Objective 1: to determine whether the items from the data collected in 2016 load on the same factors as found for the 2012 version of the 37-item AITCS. Objective 2: to determine whether …

A New Screening Procedure To Identify Co-Occurring Psychiatric And Substance Use Disorders, Carrie Deer
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
It is estimated that 24% of persons served by community mental health agencies have a co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorder (COPSD). Up to 50% of persons with substance abuse have co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (co/PTSD). A failure remains in objectively identifying this population in everyday practice. At a community mental health agency serving rural East Texas, a new Screening-Into-Intake Procedure (SIIP) for adults initiating services was implemented using the Iowa Model for Evidence-Based Practice. Implemented in four stages, this SIIP incorporated both self- and observer-rated screening instruments to assist in identifying and provisionally diagnosing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), COPSDs, …

Reduction Of Antipsychotic Use In Patients With Dementia Residing In Nursing Homes, Marysarah Frank
DNP Scholarly Projects
Abstract
Residents of nursing homes diagnosed with dementia have long been treated with psychotropic drugs for the symptoms of behavioral disturbances that are frequently associated with major neurocognitive disease. Specifically, the antipsychotic drugs have been widely used in this population. Despite a lack of evidence, antipsychotic rates have shown up to 25% of dementia patients in nursing homes (NH) are prescribed these drugs. This off-label use is not FDA approved for behavioral symptoms of dementia and the drugs have been given a black box warning related to the risk of serious and potentially irreversible side effects and even an increased …
