Forging The New Desi Music: Transnational Identity And Musical Syncretism At A South Asian-American Festival, Kevin Miller
Kevin C. Miller
For three days in late April of 2002, Hollywood, California, was home to Artwallah, a multimedia arts festival of the South Asian Diaspora. "Artwallah" essentially means "one who does art," and over 65 artists and performers of South Asian heritage contributed their individual talents and distinctive voices to a collective expression that included dance, film, visual arts, theater, literature, stand-up comedy, and music. In addition to creating a temporary physical space conducive to the sharing of art and experience between participants and the audience, the festival also provided an ideological space that encouraged an inherently "hybrid" style of artistic expression. …

Evolving shifts in research paradigms, however, have embraced research that is completed within collaborative enterprises. These enterprises often consist of partnerships between schools and universities, and differing universities within national and international settings. The purpose of this …

For String Orchestra
Performer:
Eastern Kentucky University String Orchestra
Mark Chambers, conductor.
Remembranza is a Spanish word that means remembrance. This piece was especially written for the Eastern Kentucky University’s String Orchestra as part of a series of pedagogical works that Marianella Machado has been composing in the last ten years for high school, college, and non-professional orchestras. These works feature major compositional techniques and procedures from 1900 to the present.
The principal compositional techniques employed in Remembranza are metric modulation, polytonality, and quotation. The tempo of this piece remains steady but every six or eight measures there is a …

Chopin And The Singing Voice, From The Romantic To The Real, David Kasunic
Chopin And The Singing Voice, From The Romantic To The Real, David Kasunic
David Kasunic
This study projects Chopin's wordless piano art onto the background of the practice and reception of singing in 19th-century France. At issue in this reception is the legacy of 18th-century philosophical materialism in 19th-century biological materialism. Singing ceases to be an exclusively human activity, and someone sings only when one both hears and sees that person sing. Hence Chopin as Singer was at once heard and seen. The introduction sets the stage for this sensory interdependence by showing how tuberculosis became a disease of listening---a musical disease---with the advent of the stethoscope. Hearing Chopin thus meant registering his disease; tuberculosis …

A Critical Edition Of Giuseppe Tartini’S The Art Of Bowing With Commentary, Linda Lamar
A Critical Edition Of Giuseppe Tartini’S The Art Of Bowing With Commentary, Linda Lamar
Linda Kline Lamar
The Art of Bowing by Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) may have been misrepresented since the early decades of the nineteenth century. This work, a theme and variations, is an important bowing study for violinists, but it is instructive in period articulation, left-hand technique, and ornamentation as well. Editions of the work from Tartini's time to the present are conflicting and no autograph manuscript has been found. There were four different editions of The Art of Bowing in the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century-most noteworthy among them being an edition by Le Clerc (1758) and editions in the three publications of …
