Music Density: A Novel Measurement Of Music Perception, Tyler Ussery Jan 2024

Music Density: A Novel Measurement Of Music Perception, Tyler Ussery

All Master's Theses

Empirical research in fields such as music perception, cognition, and therapy has developed considerably in recent decades. While many studies implement musical stimuli, there are few expeditious metrics for identifying the objective characteristics of music itself. The current study proposed and developed a tool for measuring perception of the theoretical concept of music density. Music density can be defined as the compactness of auditory information that comprises a piece of music. For this study, five musical factors were explored (tempo, texture, timbre, dynamics, and predictability) via a 5-point Likert scale. It is well established that personality is an important …

Relaxing Music Effects On Implicit Racial Bias And Neural Activity, Viktoriya Robertovna Broyan Jan 2019

Relaxing Music Effects On Implicit Racial Bias And Neural Activity, Viktoriya Robertovna Broyan

All Master's Theses

Music therapy has been used to treat a number of behavioral and emotional problems, including reducing the undesirable effects of having negative and traumatic associations with something/someone (e.g., PTSD). However, there have been no studies that have shown music therapy being used to treat prejudiced beliefs and biases. It was theorized that if music therapy has been used to help treat PTSD symptoms with great success, it is possible that those therapeutic effects could positively extend out to racial bias as well. The purpose of this ERP study was to investigate whether relaxing music could reduce implicit racial bias, specifically …

Frauenliebe Und Leben, Rose I. Bolstad Aug 1972

Frauenliebe Und Leben, Rose I. Bolstad

All Master's Theses

The song cycle, Frauenliebe und Leben, composed by Robert Schumann to a text by Adelbert von Chamisso, is particularly effective when the complete cycle is performed. This author, performing and studying the cyrcle, found that the piano accompaniment frequently moves independently of the vocal line, though it is an integral part of the cycle. The rhythmic patterns are designed to bring out the expressive quality of the text. Harmonic devices include extensive use of chromatic alterations, irresolution of chords, and free modulation. Finally, the vocal interpretation requires a singer with considerable poetic sensitivity.

Romanzen Aus Magelone: Characteristics Of Style, Benjamin Fredrick Hammack Jan 1972

Romanzen Aus Magelone: Characteristics Of Style, Benjamin Fredrick Hammack

All Master's Theses

Brahms' Romanzen aus Magelone serves as an excellent model for the German lied. Although other musical elements are important, Brahms never sacrifices his melodic lines, which progress diatonically in a wide range. Complex rhythms, with such devices as hemiola and holding over the measure line, are frequent. Although some songs are ternary or strophic, a free-sectional form is generally employed. The textures vary; one song may be both homophonic and polyphonic. A complex piano accompaniment always enhances the text and requires an accomplished pianist.

Some characteristics of Mr. Creston's style which are revealed in this study are his use of various rhythmic structures, pantonality, the lydian mode, and tangential variation.

The Transcription Of Piece Heroique For Wind-Band, Douglas Frazier Cairns Aug 1971

The Transcription Of Piece Heroique For Wind-Band, Douglas Frazier Cairns

All Master's Theses

Wind ensemble performers have had to rely on transcribed music for their repertoire since the earliest days of the eleventh century. The situation showed little change through the nineteenth century as composers of the stature of Cesar A. Franck continued to demonstrate their disregard for the medium. However, the advent of the public school band has provided the economic stimulus necessary to attract the efforts of major modern composers. Though this trend satisfies the need for contemporary wind-band music, transcriptions continue to serve as a major means of teaching music history. The transcription of Piece Heroique for wind-band provides an …

Handel's Bass Solos In His Oratorios, Ronald E. Jones Aug 1971

Handel's Bass Solos In His Oratorios, Ronald E. Jones

All Master's Theses

Handel, recognized as a great Baroque composer, has had his vocal compositions performed by most serious singers. Many of these would agree that his compositions are, in general, very considerate of the singer and seldom vocally awkward. Since Handel wrote for all types of voices, most singers may find appropriate literature in his oratories. All singers should have some acquaintance with Handel's vocal compositions. Unfortunately, much of the present repertoire represents little of the bel canto techniques of the golden age of singing of which Handel was a part. This writer believes every serious vocal student should at least know …

A Survey Of Saxophone Literature, John A. Johnson Jul 1971

A Survey Of Saxophone Literature, John A. Johnson

All Master's Theses

In preparing a graduate recital the writer had to select a variety of music for his program. In reviewing several small lists of saxophone music, one comprehensive collection would have been more helpful. Many hours of research in comparing smaller catalogues could have been spared the writer, if one complete survey had been available. Music teachers, students and professional musicians also could use one comprehensive list extensively and from it obtain the needed music more quickly and efficiently.

The Superintendent's Point Of View Concerning Music In The High Schools Of Washington State, Morris Ray Pedersen

It can only be shared through communication. The place of music within the curriculum will be understood through this communication between the music educator and the chief administrator. It shall be the purpose of this study to encourage the shared philosophy and communication relationship between school music educators and their administrators.

An Original Composition For Band “Suite For Band”, Bill R. Love Aug 1969

An Original Composition For Band “Suite For Band”, Bill R. Love

All Master's Theses

The writer's contemporary work seeks to contribute to the growing repertoire of original band music. The technique, range, intonation, and rhythm problems of average high school musicians are taken into special consideration. It could easily serve as an introductory piece to performers unfamiliar with the contemporary idiom. Although performance difficulties are kept to a minimum, "Suite for Band" should prove musically challenging and worthwhile to both high school and college bands.
