The Passion Of Love Or The Love Of Passion In A-Minor, Brendan Whitt

ETD Archive

A-Minor is an one-act play that examines the relationship between a Black artist and the predominantly white society and industry he must assimilate into in order to be considered a success. The main character Jacque Bonnet is used as a vessel to interpret the life and career of Joseph Bologne Chevalier de St. George. Despite Bonnet and Bologne being from different eras (Bologne mid to late 1700’s, Bonnet Mid 1800’s) I used Bonnet as a device to investigate the lesser explored life of Bologne. By creating a meta-gothic world for Jacque Bonnet to exist in, the crowd can watch his …

Religious Music In Public School Choir: Attitudes, Practices, And Experiences, Landon R. Lamontagne

ETD Archive

A large portion of the choral music canon is sacred or religious in nature because the history of choral singing is in large part due to its importance in the development of the Christian church. Many public school choir teachers include sacred or religious music as a part of their repertoire because of its historic, musical and educational value. The fact that religious songs and sacred texts are often included in public school choir curricula has raised numerous philosophical and legal questions over the past several decades, although research regarding public school choir curriculum and religion is limited. The purpose …

Experiences Of Music Therapy Junior Faculty Members: A Narrative Exploration, Carol A. Olszewski

Very few music therapists have educational background or training to be proficient at teaching at institutions of higher education. With only minimal (if any) training in andragogy and in research methodology, music therapy junior faculty (MTJF) members find themselves novice academics in the highly structured, competitive environment of the academy. In order for music therapists to be successful in their career change from clinical work to the academy, improvements and modifications to the education of future music therapy professors are likely, but data are necessary to intimate and to guide those changes. This narrative research study explored the lived experiences …

Dance With Me Tonight, Yae Ram Jeong Jan 2015

Dance With Me Tonight, Yae Ram Jeong

ETD Archive

Both music and poetry are used to describe experiences and communicate feelings. They express feelings or situations that are meaningful to the artists and speak to every level of emotion. I believe all music has expressive power, some musical works reveal this more than others, but all music carries meaning, with each work uniquely expressing that meaning. Dance With Me Tonight, a poem by Kristi Day, year unknown, has 12 stanzas. The work is mostly used in weddings and anniversaries. As much as I understood of the author's work, the piece begins in a minor mood setting to demonstrate the …

19th Century Sea Shanties: From The Capstan To The Classroom, Sharon Marie Risko Jan 2015

19th Century Sea Shanties: From The Capstan To The Classroom, Sharon Marie Risko

ETD Archive

Sea shanties were much more than simple folk songs of the sea. They were an integral tool in wooden ship operations in the 19th century. They include universal themes that connect us with the past telling us tales of love, adventure, far away destinations, and of trials and tribulations. The tunes are rollicking, the refrains memorable, and are to be sung with ultimate abandon. When brought into the classroom, teachers can introduce musical concepts, enrich lessons, and encourage student participation through the rousing singing of sea shanties. In this study the historical evolution and function of sea shanties are explored. …

Factors Affecting Student Motivation Related To Enrollment And Retention In Music And Performing Ensembles Outside Of The School Environment, Craig T. Klonowski

ETD Archive

Despite extensive research regarding student motivation in performing ensembles, little is known about student motivation in ensembles outside of the school environment. The literature regarding motivation in school ensembles shows motivation comes from five main categories: parents and family, peers, directors, environment, and the students themselves. This study asks basic questions regarding motivation of students in a large community performing ensemble, and compares them to responses from the same students regarding their school ensemble experiences. The responses to the questionnaire suggest that motivating factors in community ensembles fall into the same basic categories, but have slightly different nuances based on …

The Impact Of The American Community Band On Music Education, Rodney L. Miller

ETD Archive

Community bands in the United States have increased in numbers since the late twentieth century. At the same time, music education in American schools has remained strong even with the serious funding issues that face many music programs in nearly every state. The purpose of this study was to find what impact American community bands have on music education. Eight directors/executive directors from eight community bands were interviewed with 37 questions. It was determined that the impact that American community bands have on music education is positive and far reaching but that more could be done with further research to …
