The Japanese government has a vested interest in either avoiding discussion of its war-torn past or arguing for a revisionist take. The need to play up Japanese victimization over Japanese aggression during World War II has led to many museums having their exhibits censored or revised to fit this narrative goal. During the 1990’s, Japan’s national discourse was more open to discussions of war crimes and the damage caused by their aggression. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2000 saw Congress require the Department of Defense (DOD) to prepare an annual report on Chinese military power. This report contains classified and unclassified editions. Documenting Chinese military developments, strategy, and trends are critical parts of these reports. Beijing’s military activities in the East China Sea (ECS) are important report components. This work explains the importance of these and other DOD reports for those studying ECS developments, examines how DOD has documented Beijing’s military activities within these publicly accessible reports, and describes how members of Congress have reacted to ECS developments during the Obama …

Elisabeth Covington Smith served as an officer in the Women's Army Air Corps and the Army at the end of WWII and during the Korean War. She loved to travel, visiting many countries during her time in the service and after her retirement in 1965. This collection contains photographs of her travel's through Japan, Thailand, India, and the Philippines 1950-1953, photographs of For Lee, Virginia and a base near Atlantic City, New Jersey in the 1940s, her military medals ribbons and pins, and her uniform (ca. 1965) with cap, skirt, and jacket (with all insignia, buttons, patches and bars.)
