Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, including depression. Female collegiate athletes are at greater risk compared to the non-athlete population. Athletic personnel should be prepared to screen, identify, and refer female athletes for eating disorders. However, most staff are not familiar with common signs and symptoms of disordered eating, which could delay recognition of unhealthy behavior and ultimately long-term health risks. Appropriate screening protocols can assist with early identification.
