Groundwater Remediation Using Modified Biochar, Kers Ung-Watson, Ismail Abdulraheem, Nikki Tibayan, Suraj Pochampally

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Biochar, a lightweight black residue made of carbon, has proved to be an effective adsorbent to remove TCE from groundwater. Not only is it an economical substitute for conventional adsorbents but it can be created by using a variety of organic materials. For this project, it will rely on walnut shell feedstock to create biochar as this had the best ability to adsorb TCE.

Medicinal Plants’ Stress Factors: Effects On Metabolites And Novel Perspectives For Tolerance, Mayssaloune Ali Kanso, Mohamad Ali Hijazi, Maha Aboul Ela Prof., Abdalla El-Lakany

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

Medicinal plants are rich in secondary metabolites representing different chemical classes and synthesized by various biochemical pathways. However, these compounds are susceptible to potential herbal predators and to environmental influences. Several factors induce different biotic and abiotic stresses (drought, cold, salinity, heat) that lead to fluctuations in the biogenesis and accumulation of secondary metabolites by which plants react to overcome the threatening stress conditions. This contribution aims to give an overview of the various medicinal plant defense mechanisms against imminent threats and their impact on secondary metabolites profiles in the most effective medicinal plant species such as the levels of …

Study The Level Of Selenoprotein P In Egyptian Patients With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver, Ahmed S. Elkhalaly, Ayman A. Elgamal, Gamal S. El-Deeb, Nesreen G. El-Helbawy

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objectives The study aims to evaluate circulating selenoprotein P levels in patients with the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease compared with healthy controls. Background Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease represents a spectrum of liver diseases with key stages consisting of nonalcoholic fatty liver, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and eventual cirrhosis. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease affects more than 20% of the population worldwide. Methods This is a case–control, retrospective study that was conducted on 72 patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (cases), and 36 healthy volunteers without nonalcoholic fatty liver disease or any chronic liver disease as controls. Ultrasonography of the liver of all …

Robust Parameters Tuning Of Different Power System Stabilizers Using A Quantum Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimizer, Mahmoud A. El-Dabah, Mohamed H. Hassan, Saleh Kamel, Hossam Zawbaa Jan 2022

Electrical power system abnormalities may have several negative consequences on its stable operation. As a result, preserving its stability under such operational states has become an ongoing challenge for power engineers. PSSs are created as auxiliary controllers to address the instability issues produced upon disturbances. They dampen the oscillations induced by the disturbances by giving the system the necessary damping torque. This research aims at presenting a comprehensive study for the optimum tuning of power system stabilizer (PSS) of different structures. This aim is accomplished with the help of a novel modified optimization algorithm called Quantum Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimizer. …

2022 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc.) of beef production.

Dedicated in memory of Dr. Terry Klopfenstein (March 10, 1939-April 30, 2021), Professor Emeritus, Animal Science Department, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

This paper presents results that show the effect of hydrothermal carbonization and subsequent cold plasma jet treatment with helium and argon on the structure and sorption properties of a material—spent brewery grain. Treatment of activated carbon, with a cold atmospheric plasma jet, was used comparatively. The effect of activation on the pore structure of the materials was carried out by the volumetric method at low pressure (N2, 77 K). The specific surface area as well as the total pore volume, average pore size, and pore size distribution were determined using different theoretical models. A high improvement in the sorption capacity …

Occurrence, Toxicity And Adsorptive Removal Of The Chloramphenicol Antibiotic In Water: A Review, Luan Minh Nguyen, Ngoan Thi Thao Nguyen, Thuy Thi Thanh Nguyen, Thuong Thi Nguyen, Duyen Thi Cam Nguyen, Thuan Van Tran Jan 2022

Occurrence, Toxicity And Adsorptive Removal Of The Chloramphenicol Antibiotic In Water: A Review, Luan Minh Nguyen, Ngoan Thi Thao Nguyen, Thuy Thi Thanh Nguyen, Thuong Thi Nguyen, Duyen Thi Cam Nguyen, Thuan Van Tran

Journal Articles

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacterial antibiotic used against conjunctivitis, meningitis, plague, cholera, and typhoid fever. As a consequence, chloramphenicol ends up polluting the aquatic environment, wastewater treatment plants, and hospital wastewaters, thus disrupting ecosystems and inducing microbial resistance. Here, we review the occurrence, toxicity, and removal of chloramphenicol with emphasis on adsorption techniques. We present the adsorption performance of adsorbents such as biochar, activated carbon, porous carbon, metal-organic framework, composites, zeolites, minerals, molecularly imprinted polymers, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The effect of dose, pH, temperature, initial concentration, and contact time is discussed. Adsorption is controlled by π-π interactions, donor-acceptor interactions, …
