Part I: Complete Dentures And Diabetes Correlation, Ibeth Erazo Jul 2019

Part I: Complete Dentures And Diabetes Correlation, Ibeth Erazo

Publications and Research

Diabetes is one of the most frequent pathologies that dentists encounter, due to its high prevalence worldwide. The aim of this study is to present the correlation between diabetes and complete denture wearers, intending to emphasize the importance of proper control and denture adaptation to oral environment for this type of patient. Within the sphere of the dental office, one of the main complications to consider in this type of patient is periodontal disease, which is their most frequent complication. Other important oral manifestations considered in the research are fungal infections, xerostomia, and burning mouth syndrome. It is common for …

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation that destroys periodontal tissues caused by the accumulation of bacterial biofilms that can be affected by environmental factors. This report describes an association study to evaluate the relationship of environmental factors to the expression of periodontitis using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES) from 1999–2004. A wide range of environmental variables (156) were assessed in patients categorized for periodontitis (n = 8884). Multiple statistical approaches were used to explore this dataset and identify environmental variable patterns that enhanced or lowered the prevalence of periodontitis. Our findings indicate an array of environmental variables were …

The Effect Of Enamel Matrix Derivative/Papilla Reflection Surgery On The Clinical And Alveolar Bone Outcomes In Periodontal Maintenance Patients, Erica E. Jasa May 2019

The Effect Of Enamel Matrix Derivative/Papilla Reflection Surgery On The Clinical And Alveolar Bone Outcomes In Periodontal Maintenance Patients, Erica E. Jasa

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if local application of enamel matrix derivative (Emdogain; EMD), combined with minimally invasive papilla reflection/root preparation (PR/RP), is effective in improving probe depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and interproximal bone height (IBH) in persistent 6-9 mm periodontal pockets in patients on periodontal maintenance therapy (PMT). Fifty periodontal maintenance patients with advanced chronic periodontitis presenting with a 6-9 mm interproximal PD were included in study. Experimental (PR/RP+EMD; n=24) and control (PR/RP+S; n=26) therapies were randomly allocated. Roots were treated with reflection of interproximal papillae, root planing assisted with endoscope evaluation, and acid …

Development Of Bar-Peptide Nanoparticles And Electrospun Fibers For The Prevention And Treatment Of Oral Biofilms., Mohamed Yehia Mahmoud May 2019

Development Of Bar-Peptide Nanoparticles And Electrospun Fibers For The Prevention And Treatment Of Oral Biofilms., Mohamed Yehia Mahmoud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Periodontal diseases are globally prevalent inflammatory disorders that affect ~47% of U.S adults. Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) has been identified as a “keystone” pathogen that disrupts host-microbe homeostasis and contributes to the initiation and progression of periodontitis. Pg associates with oral streptococci in supragingival plaque and this interaction represents a potential target for therapeutic intervention. Previously our group developed a peptide (designated BAR), that potently inhibits Pg/Streptococcus gordonii (Sg) adherence in vitro and Pg virulence in a murine model of periodontitis. While efficacious, BAR (SspB Adherence Region) provided transient inhibition and required higher concentrations of BAR to disrupt established …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: In this study, we aimed to assess the cancer risk among patients with periodontal disease.Materials and methods: Patients diagnosed with periodontal diseases at Hacettepe University between 2007 and 2012 were included and data on the diagnosis of any cancer after periodontal disease were collected from patient files. The age- and sex-standardized incidence rates (SIRs) were calculated using Turkish National Cancer Registry 2013 data. Results: A total of 5199 patients were included. Median follow-up was 7.2 years. Patients with periodontal diseases had 17% increased risk of cancer compared with the expected counts for the corresponding age and sex groups (SIR: 1.17; …

Review Of Literatures: Importance Of Vitamin D In Dentistry, Wareeratn Chengprapakorn

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

This article is aimed to review of literatures on vitamin D roles in overall health and its effects in dentistry, particularly, periodontal disease, orthodontics tooth movement, dental implant osseointegration and also osteonecrosis of the jaw. On account of new insights of vitamin D implication in immune response. This article will also focus on vitamin D effects on oral response to various dental procedures.
