Concentration Of Leukotrienes B4 And C4 In Human Periradicular Lesions, Elisabetta Cotti Dec 1990

Concentration Of Leukotrienes B4 And C4 In Human Periradicular Lesions, Elisabetta Cotti

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The 5-lipoxygenase metabolites of arachidonic acid such as leukotrienes (LT) B4 and C4, are potent mediators of inflammation. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the concentrations of LTB4 and LTC4 in human periradicular lesions. Specimens from asymptomatic and symptomatic patients were obtained and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen. Periradicular tissues from unerupted third molars as well as chronically inflamed gingival tissues were also obtained, frozen and were used as negative and positive controls respectively. The concentrations of LTB4 and LTC4 were determined by the reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography. Representative …

A Small Area Simulation Approach To Determining Variation In Dental Procedure Rates, Paula Diehr Nov 1990

A Small Area Simulation Approach To Determining Variation In Dental Procedure Rates, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

All small area analyses need to compare the observed variability in rates to that expected by chance alone, but the expected variability is usually not known. This paper uses patient-level data for five dental procedures to simulate the distributions of the summary statistics that are usually generated in such studies. These statistics are found to vary greatly even under the "null hypothesis" that all dentists are using procedures at the same rates. The simulated dentist rates are compared to observed rates obtained in a different study. These findings illustrate problems that can occur in small area analysis studies, and emphasize …

Mandatory Continuing Education: Does It Really Protect Society From Incompetent Health Professionals, Patricia A. Mcpartland Sep 1990

Mandatory Continuing Education: Does It Really Protect Society From Incompetent Health Professionals, Patricia A. Mcpartland

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Although the focus is narrow, this article argues that, in the face of short half-lives of current knowledge, continuing education requirements are needed and suggests possible improvements in the way that continuing education is implemented. While the issue is not explicitly addressed, readers might ponder whether such requirements might be profitably extended to other disciplines.

Peripheral Fibroma/Fibrous Epulis With And Without Calcifications. A Clinical Evaluation Of 204 Cases In Singapore, Rosnah Binti Zain, Fei Y. J.

Prof. Dr. Rosnah Binti Zain

Peripheral fibroma/fibrous epulis accounts for the great majority of localised gingival swellings as was substantiated by various reports in the literature. A study was undertaken to investigate the clinical features of a series of 204 localised fibrous gingival swellings received by the Histopathology Laboratory, Department of Oral Surgery, National University of Singapore. The female patients were more affected than the male patients and the lesions occurred predominantly among the Chinese. The lesions were mainly pedunculated and most commonly occurred in anterior maxilla. The recurrence rate was about 10.3%. In conclusion the results obtained in this study were overall in agreement …

Analysis Of Cholesterol Screening Practices, Jane Mattina Aug 1990

Analysis Of Cholesterol Screening Practices, Jane Mattina

MSN Research Projects

Cardiovascular disease, which consists of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and cerebrovascular accidents, affects over 82 million American adults and is currently the leading cause of death in the United States. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies high-blood cholesterol as one of the main risk factors in the development of these diseases. Furthermore, 71 million Americans report having a high-blood cholesterol level, yet only about one third of those people have it under control (CDC, 2014c). The National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) guidelines recommend that adults 20 years or older be screened …

Adapting The Health Knowledge Inventory For Use With High School Seniors, Cara Case

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Knowledge alone is not enough to ensure that the individual will act in a healthy manner or choose positive health behaviors. However, knowledge may enable one to engage in sound health practices. Health education must respond to the changes in American culture by developing approaches that achieve maximum communication and learning. The purpose of this thesis is to assess the suitability of the Health Knowledge Inventory – High School Version (HKI-HS) for testing with high school seniors. A field test was performed to assess whether the HKI-HS is an appropriate measurement instrument of personal health knowledge among high school seniors. …

A Modified Nance Unilateral Molar Distalizer, Tracy J. Reiner Jun 1990

A Modified Nance Unilateral Molar Distalizer, Tracy J. Reiner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This clinical study evaluated a modified Nance appliance designed by the author to distalize molars unilaterally for Class II correction. This fixed appliance did not rely upon extraoral traction or intraoral elastics. Twelve unilateral Class II patients aged 13 to 17 were treated nonextraction with the appliance. Pretreatment and posttreatment photographs were taken of the palatal soft tissue and did not reveal any untoward changes as a result of the Nance acrylic button. All molars were corrected to an Angle's Class I relationship. Molar correction was evaluated visually and molar distalization was measured using an acrylic jig fitted to the …

Evaluation Of Headgear Safety : A Comparative Study, William J. Pritchard

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative safety of headgear safety straps. Samples from five different safety headgear straps simulated orthopedic and orthodontic use and data were collected from a series of pulls on an Instron machine. The straps were compared by the distance the face bow traveled before the safety mechanism released, the force built into the face bow at safety release and the force required to remove the inner bow out of the molar tube. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the distance a face bow can travel from the molar tube and still be …

The Long Term Stability Of The Dental Arches Following Rapid Palatal Expansion, Robert C. Stockdale Jun 1990

The Long Term Stability Of The Dental Arches Following Rapid Palatal Expansion, Robert C. Stockdale

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The rapid palatal expander is an appliance which has been used to laterally expand the maxillary dental arch, with subsequent mandibular dental arch expansion.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and quantify long term post treatment changes in the length and width of both dental arches following rapid palatal expansion.

Plaster models from eleven patients treated with rapid palatal expansion were obtained seven or more years after treatment. The dental arches were intact anterior to the first molars and no retreatment had taken place.

Maxillary and mandibular canine, premolar and molar arch width, arch length, arch circumference, and …

Active Treatment Time And Incisor Root Resorption Of Malocclusions Treated With Corticotomy Facilitated Orthodontics Vs. Non-Corticotomy Treatment, Douglas F. Tetz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the variables of treatment time and root resorption comparing subjects treated with corticotomy-facilitated orthodontics and controls treated by conventional methods. Twelve adult corticotomy subjects were utilized for the treatment time variable and seven of these subjects were utilized for the root resorption variable. These subjects were matched with non-corticotomized adult controls with regards to malocclusion, facial type, overbite, overjet and arch length deficiency. Average treatment time was found to be decreased by an average of 50% for those treated by corticotomy-facilitated orthodontics compared to non-corticotomy facilitated orthodontic care. Root resorption was significantly …

At the Faculties of Dentistry in Chiang Mai, Thailand (CM), and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (KL), 234 and 233 consecutive out-patients of mean ages 33.8 and 31.0 yr, respectively, were examined for the presence of oral mucosal lesions. Tobacco in some form was regularly used by 31.7% and 27.5% of the study populations in CM and KL, respectively. Cigarette smoking was the predominant habit. In CM three persons chewed betel quids and nine smoked banana leaf cigars daily. In addition, there were 24 habitual chewers of tea leaves (miang). In KL six persons chewed betel quids daily. In CM and KL …

The Relationship Between Occupational Choice And Perceptions Of Professional Nursing Functions And Characteristics, Ellis Quinn Youngkin Apr 1990

The Relationship Between Occupational Choice And Perceptions Of Professional Nursing Functions And Characteristics, Ellis Quinn Youngkin

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This study identifies the occupational interests and predominant vocational personality types of freshmen students (undeclared majors, nursing majors, and non-nursing majors), explores perceptions about selected professional nursing functions and characteristics among the students, and examines perceptual differences between groups (majors).

A non-experimental ex post facto design is used to analyze data from 312 students in a large urban university. Descriptive and inferential statistics are applied in data analysis. The following findings support the hypotheses: (1) Nursing continues to attract the traditional student who has Holland's Social vocational personality type as measured by the Self-Directed Search, although many Social types are …

Morphological And Physiological Examination Of A Demyelinating And Remyelinating Lesion, Paul Anson Felts Apr 1990

Morphological And Physiological Examination Of A Demyelinating And Remyelinating Lesion, Paul Anson Felts

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Multiple sclerosis causes demyelination of central nerve fibers, and it is this pathology which results in most of the symptoms of the disease. The repair of the fibers by remyelination has been advanced as a potential symptomatic therapy, but at present the conduction properties of remyelinated central fibers are not well understood. In this study the conduction properties of Schwannian or oligodendrocyte remyelinated central nerve fibers have been determined. In addition, the status of the blood-brain barrier has been examined in lesions characterized by Schwann cell remyelination. These lesions chronically lack astrocytes, a cell believed to be involved in the …

Home Safety-The Challenge To Public Health, Ray Ranson Mar 1990

Home Safety-The Challenge To Public Health, Ray Ranson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Home accidents are now a leading cause of death and injury particularly in young children and the elderly. For example, 3.1 million accidents occur in the home every year in the United Kingdom with no signs of diminishment. More effective systems of accident recording, monitoring, investigation, intercollaboration and education are urgently needed to redress this epidemic. More attention needs to be given to preventive safety design in architect training and adoption of home safety design standards and legislation. The major threat to public health which home accidents represent must not go unchallenged.
