A Study Of Menstruation In Young Chinese Female Athletes, Choon-Khim Chong, May-Kuen Wong
A Study Of Menstruation In Young Chinese Female Athletes, Choon-Khim Chong, May-Kuen Wong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
In order to investigate the problem of menstrual dysfunction among young female athletes in the Chinese population.152 female athletes participating in the 1988 Taiwan Area Athletic Meet (TAAM) were surveyed via questionnaire. Among the athletes who were younger than 18 years, those who were premenarchetrained had delayed menarche (13.7±1.1 years), which was statistically significant, when compared with the postmenarche-trained group (13.0±1.4 years)and the college students in general population(12.8±1.0 years) (p<0.05 and p<0.0001,respectively).For the problem of irregular menstrual pattern, athletes who were trained after menarche were studied. It was found that the percentage of athletes with regular menstrual cycle declined from 78% …
Nutrient Intake And Urine And Serum Calcium Response To A Low Calcium Diet And Repletion, Nancy Roberts
Nutrient Intake And Urine And Serum Calcium Response To A Low Calcium Diet And Repletion, Nancy Roberts
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A high percentage of American women do not consume the Recommended Dietary Allowance for calcium. Marginal intake of calcium (Ca) in the years when peak bone mass is being formed may have a detrimental impact on bone later in life. This study looked at the effect of low Ca intake and other dietary components on serum and urine values of Ca as well as the response to repletion.
Seventeen free-living females, age 21 to 30 years, were placed on a low Ca diet (/day) for 22 days after a baseline of intake >800 mg/day for at least 6 weeks. Calcibind …

"Black Knight Checks White King": The Conflict Between Avery Brundage And The African Nations Over South African Membership In The Ioc, Shayne P. Quick
Shayne Quick
Extract: During the 1960s, the conflict within the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over South African participation and representation in Olympic affairs reached such heightened stage that tension existed for the greater part of this decade. The intensity and significance of the debate directly related to the power struggle within the IOC during this time. The IOCs conservative hierarchy, led by the organisation's president Avery Brundage, was the leading force seeking to restrain the larger movement to expel the South African National Olympic Committee (SANOC). While the Brundage led group was initially able to ward off this challenge the newly admitted …

Monocytes And Polymorphonuclear Neutrophils Of Patients With Streptococcal Pharyngitis Express Increased Numbers Of Type I Igg Fc Receptors., Paul M. Guyre, A Scott Campbell, Wayne D. Kniffin, Michael W. Fanger
Dartmouth Scholarship
Studies using cultured cells have shown that gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) induces the expression of Fc gamma RI (the type I Fc receptor for IgG) on human polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and greatly increases the number of these receptors on human monocytes. Administration of rIFN-gamma in vivo also causes enhanced Fc gamma RI expression on these cell populations. Because streptococcal antigens are potent inducers of IFN-gamma in vitro, we postulated that IFN-gamma would be produced endogenously in vivo in patients with streptococcal infections. Such production of IFN-gamma in vivo, even at low levels, might be expected to induce the expression of Fc …

Quantitative Analysis Of Elbow Flexor And Elbow Extensor In Hemiplegic Patients, Tsu-Sheng Shiau, Hwei-Rong Tseng, Tao-Chang Hsu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Subjective semi-quantitative method is often used to evaluate the severity of spasticity in clinical condition. The purpose of this study is to develope an objective and quantitative model to evaluate the severity of spasticity for hemiplegic patients. We utilize Kin-Corn III isokinetic machine to evaluate 16 hemiplegic patients with 8 velocities from 5 to 210 degrees per second. The elbow joints of subjects are pulled when subjects totally relaxed and under no influence of gravity. The curve of resistance force was recorded and analyzed. We found 150 degrees per second is the best velocity for the evluation. And for elbow …

The Effects Of Different Weight Bearing On Spasticity During Exercise In Stroke Patients, Sue-May Kang, Rai-Chi Chan, Tao-Chang Hsu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different weight bearing on reducing spasticity in stroke patients. Quantity of spasticity was defined as level of associated reaction during exercise. It can be measured by surface integrated EMG levels.Thirty cerebrovascular accident patients (Brunnstrom's stage II-V in upper extremity) performed forward target-touching exercise in sitting position. The exercise was performed with affected shoulder flexion and keeping elbow straight while the associated reaction in same side biceps brachii was monitored by integrated EMG levels and the weight bearing of both feet was measured by 2 weights. All factors influencing spasticity …

Effects Of Age, Neuropsychological Impairment, And Medication On Regional Cerebral Blood Flow In Schizophrenia And Major Affective Disorder, Perry C. Goldstein, Gregory G. Brown, Andrew Marcus, James R. Ewing
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Reports of abnormalities of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with schizophrenia and major affective disorder are contradictory. To gain a better understanding of the possible sources of these contradictions, the rCBF and neuropsychological functioning of 15 schizophrenics, 15 patients with major affective disorder, and 15 age-matched controls were studied. No group differences in overall rCBF, percent frontal devialion in flow, or rCBF asymmetries were observed. Both overall rCBF and percent frontal deviation of rCBF were reduced with greater age and with increasing neuropsychological impairment. Dosage of neuroleptic medication was associated with reduced whole brain flow, not with percent …

Response To Cpap And Uppp In Apnea, Frank J. Zorick, Timothy Roehrs, William Conway, George Potts, Thomas Roth
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Ninety-two consecutive patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) were studied before and six weeks after treatment with either nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) (n = 46 per group). Assignment of patients to treatment was based on clinical considerations and patient preference. Patients were assessed by nocturnal polysomnography and performance on the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) the following day. Before treatment, the CPAP and UPPP groups did not differ in sleep-related respiratory disturbance, oxygenation during sleep, fragmentation of sleep, or the level of excessive daytime sleepiness indicated by the MSLT. Both treatments produced significant improvement …
