Occupational Therapy's Impact Utilizing Trauma-Informed Care With At-Risk Youth, Kerri Lindeman
Capstone Projects
The 14-week capstone experience aimed to advocate and implement occupational therapy (OT) alongside a non-profit organization serving at-risk youth while utilizing trauma-informed care (TIC) approach. Alongside various staff and volunteers, this capstone project focused on aiding underserved children in a variety of age-specific after-school programs. This specific population of youth have limited resources at home. The families in the community have limitations with basic needs including food, water, and shelter. The organization was able to fulfill these basic needs along with activities to meet the developmental needs of each child. Due to their minimal resources, the children also have limited …
Exploring The Effect Of Early Motor Delay And Physical Therapy Interventions On The Parent-Child Relationship, Rebecca Molinini
Exploring The Effect Of Early Motor Delay And Physical Therapy Interventions On The Parent-Child Relationship, Rebecca Molinini
Theses and Dissertations
Emotional availability (EA) or the ability of the parent-child dyad to engage emotionally and partake in congruent and mutually enjoyable interactions, is essential for familial health and well-being. EA is considered the “connective tissue” of healthy parent-child relationships and is associated with secure attachment, maternal mental health, and children’s adaptive development. Most evidence supporting the integral role of EA on healthy outcomes is supported by typically developing populations in which adults present with a social or biological risk factor such as experiencing past traumas of adversities with mental health. In line with the transactional model of development, children are equal …
The Relationship Of Child Health And Parenting Stress To Child Neurocognitive Development, Nancy Alise Farrell
The Relationship Of Child Health And Parenting Stress To Child Neurocognitive Development, Nancy Alise Farrell
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Problem. Although the United States rates high in economic resources, the neurocognitive development (NCD) of children falls behind many other developed nations. Levels of parenting stress may be linked to sociodemographic factors such as the high incidence of poverty in children or health disparities in children, which in turn may affect NCD in children. Using the data from an observational, longitudinal cohort study of a diverse population could provide information related to parenting stress, child health, and related factors to guide and support interventions with families and policies to improve child NCD. Aims. The overall aim of this study was …
Dirfloortime: An Innovative Approach To Supporting Development Through Connection And Understanding, Jessica Townsend
Dirfloortime: An Innovative Approach To Supporting Development Through Connection And Understanding, Jessica Townsend
Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
Children with developmental delays and neurobehavioral disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), often have social, emotional, or behavioral delays. Children who are not reaching developmental milestones or are reaching them at a slower rate may need extra support and services to reach their full potential. An innovative approach to treatment of developmental delay commonly used among therapists is called DIRFloortime®. DIRFloortime® (also referred to as Floortime) is the application of the Developmental, Individual-Differences, & Relationship-Based (DIR) model in practice. The purpose of this capstone project was to explore Floortime as a holistic intervention …

Implementing A Validated Developmental Screening Tool In A Rural Pediatric Primary Care Clinic To Enhance Early Diagnosis Of Developmental Delays From Birth To 36 Months, Melissa A. Armstead
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Abstract
Evaluation of childhood development with a validated screening tool has been the gold standard for best practice recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) since 2006. A rural pediatric clinic was the setting for this quality improvement project. The goals of the project were to 1) increase the number of children identified with developmental delays, 2) identify children with delays earlier, and 3) maximize the number of children receiving early intervention (EI) services between the ages of birth to 36 months. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3) was the selected screening tool adopted by the clinic in June …
Developmental Stepping Stones, Couri S. Taylor
Developmental Stepping Stones, Couri S. Taylor
Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: Healthy child development is imperative for future success, parents/caregivers are at the helm of guiding children down a path that supports health and wellbeing for future success. When there is a lack of education, information, and resources readily available to families there is a risk for delayed development and lack of engagement. For many of our clients, health literacy is low, vulnerability is high, and they often feel cornered with no other available choices. Making it easier not to engage in certain activities, due to lack of opportunities, resources, and/or education. This lack of participation has a significant impact …
Examining Childhood Outcomes In Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Kailyn Conner
Examining Childhood Outcomes In Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Kailyn Conner
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy
Rates of neonatal abstinence syndrome have been rising over the past several years, alongside rising rates of opioid use disorder, propelled by the continuing Opioid Epidemic ravaging the country. Children born withdrawing from opioids they were exposed to in utero have known health complications through the first year of life that have been studied in the current literature. Less is known, however, about the outcomes these children face in childhood. As many of these children are progressing to childhood, there is an urgent need for healthcare system to prepare to handle the health needs of these children; outcomes related to …

Iron-Deficiency Anaemia (Ida): Socio-Cultural Misconceptions Intersect The Health Of Vulnerable Populations In Developing Countries, Samantha G. Alarcon Basurto
University Honors Theses
Iron is a mineral that the human body uses to make hemoglobin, a protein that red blood cells need to carry oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. The lack of adequate iron in the blood is known as iron deficiency, which if experienced in greater proportions, can lead to anaemia. Iron-deficiency anaemia is generally understood as a nutritional deficiency that can be treated by diets of food rich in iron content or the ingestion of iron supplements; yet lack of information, restricted access to bioavailable iron-rich foods, minimal awareness of anaemia’s detrimental effects on children’s cognitive …

What Parents Value Matters: Examining The Association Between Cultural Values, Parenting Styles/Practices, And Child Outcomes, Chen-Yun Wang
What Parents Value Matters: Examining The Association Between Cultural Values, Parenting Styles/Practices, And Child Outcomes, Chen-Yun Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have identified significant relationships between parenting styles and child outcomes. However, these associations might vary in different cultures because parenting behaviors could link to cultural values. Additionally, understanding the cultural values of parents would help researchers better understand the reasons of parents’ behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between parental Asian values, parenting styles, parenting practices, and child outcomes. Parents of preschool-age children (N = 273) from Taiwan completed a series of parenting values and parenting behaviors questionnaires. Teachers rated child prosocial behaviors, modesty, sociability, and impulse control. Results revealed that some domains …

Factors Associated With High Risk Infant Follow-Up Attendance, Martha Grant Fuller
Factors Associated With High Risk Infant Follow-Up Attendance, Martha Grant Fuller
Dissertations
Prematurity is a significant public health problem and preterm infants face well described risks of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory of development describes interactions between biological and environmental factors and explains how these interactions can impact development. Systematic follow-up of preterm, high-risk infants is recommended for early identification of problems and provision of interventions and support services. Most research on follow-up attendance has involved small, single sites. A retrospective analysis of population based data available in the California Children’s Services High Risk Infant Follow-up Quality of Care Initiative (HRIF-QCI) data system was performed to examine factors associated with attendance …
Certain General Anesthetics Used In Pediatrics Hinder Neurological Development In Infants, Michael R. Hirschi
Certain General Anesthetics Used In Pediatrics Hinder Neurological Development In Infants, Michael R. Hirschi
Selected Honors Theses
General anesthetics act by either blocking N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors or over stimulating γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors.1–3 The actions of these receptors are responsible for the anesthetized state and are also crucial in the neurological development of infants.2,4–8 Animal studies, although limited, provide vital information about general anesthesia’s neurotoxicity its hindrance of neurological development. Exposure to general anesthesia can severely hinder proper neuronal migration, synaptogenesis, and can drastically increase neuronal apoptosis in infant animals.9–16 General anesthetics are more neurotoxic to infant animals in combination compared to individually.10,16,17 Additionally, multiple exposures to general anesthesia tend to have compounding …
The Effects Of Baby Sign On Child Development, Joanna Scott
The Effects Of Baby Sign On Child Development, Joanna Scott
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Introduction: Although the popular media supports the use of baby sign for enhanced developmental outcomes of children, empirical research verifying the actual effects of baby sign on the areas of communicative, cognitive, social, and physical development, is limited. Advocates of baby sign suggest pre-lingual symbolic communication may result in accelerated development whereas critics claim definitive conclusions cannot be drawn because of flawed methodology in the research. Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to explore whether baby sign has an impact on the developmental growth of children. Methods: Using a between groups research design, assessment data were obtained from …
Teaching Young Mothers To Identify Developmental Milestones, Katelyn M. Guastaferro
Teaching Young Mothers To Identify Developmental Milestones, Katelyn M. Guastaferro
Public Health Theses
Inappropriate parental expectations of age-appropriate behaviors and unawareness of developmental milestones can increase instances of child maltreatment. Additionally, experiences of child maltreatment can have a negative impact on the developmental trajectory of a child. The present research describes a parental aide, the tDevelop, delivered to parents at risk for child maltreatment through SafeCare Parent-Child Interaction (PCI) training with the aim of increasing identification of developmental milestones and age-appropriate activities. Two high-risk families with children close to 24-months of age were recruited from a residential program for young mothers working to develop self-sufficiency skills. The families were presented with the tDevelop …
Maximum Repetition Rates In Children At-Risk For Dyslexia, Amy L. Baxter
Maximum Repetition Rates In Children At-Risk For Dyslexia, Amy L. Baxter
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
My senior thesis has focused on current research exploring precursor communication skills being conducted by Dr. Ben Massen at the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen in the Netherlands. To that end, I worked in an acoustics lab analyzing Maximum Repetition Rates (MRR), also known as diadochokinetic rates, DDKs, in young children's speech development. This four year funded research project began in 2004.
In this paper I will provide an overview of the underlying theoretical considerations guiding the study and then describe my particular contribution to the effort, completed during Fall semester 2005 while I was a foreign exchange student.
Number Conservation As Related To Type Of Transformation, Marsha Taliaferro Will
Number Conservation As Related To Type Of Transformation, Marsha Taliaferro Will
Master's Theses
In order to assess the negative effects of color, size, shape, and spacing (length) transformations on conservation judgements sixty-four 3, 4, 5, and 6 year old children were tested on four Piagetian type conservation of number tasks each containing one reversible color, size, shape or spacing transformation. Order of transformation presentation was counterbalanced and number of objects used per transformation were varied from 3 to 5 to 7 to 9. Results show that spacing (when compared to color, size and shape) is a prepotent cue for non-conserving 3, 4, and 5 year olds but not for 6 year olds. Results …

A Case Study Of The Relationship Between Role-Taking Skills And Intellectual Development, Linda Suzanne Green
A Case Study Of The Relationship Between Role-Taking Skills And Intellectual Development, Linda Suzanne Green
All Master's Theses
A series of thirteen role-taking and cognitive development tasks, taken from research done on Piaget's developmental theories, were presented to ascertain the relationship between refined role-taking skills and the level of intellectual development demonstrated by a child in Piaget's pre-operational phase (two to seven years).
The results indicated that a child in this age range is not able to remove himself from his egocentric position and utilize the concepts of decentering and reversibility in constructing a meaningful message. This would indicate a lack of role-taking skill refinement.
It was concluded that the use of this type of task series would …
