Preliminary investigation has indicated large decreases in fetal skin permeability during the latter half of gestation (Parmley and Seeds, 1970; Treager, 1966). The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the degree of skin permeability in fetal guinea pigs at various gestational stages. The test hypothesis was that these skins would show a significant decrease in permeability to tritiated water when tested at time increments through out the latter half of gestation.

Two experiments examined the effects of training with written instructions on trainees' use of general behavior modification performance skills. In Experiment I, the behavior modification skills of two groups of trainees were assessed in scripted roleplay sessions. Each group participated in differing numbers of baseline sessions before training was presented. Training consisted of studying a set of written rules and examples. Only after training did the trainees demonstrate improved skills. Since the "child" behaviors which were presented during roleplay sessions were all different from one another, the trainees' performance demonstrated generality of the effects of training across "child" behaviors. The literature also shows this traditional exclusivity to be vanishing. The present research was conducted in order to ascertain whether differences in attitudes exist between the three main professional groups which are presently the major providers of mental health care -- psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers -- with respect to six treatment modalities: Individual Psychotherapy, Individual Counseling, Family Therapy, Group Therapy, Psychiatric Medication and Psychiatric Hospitalization. This study examined the effects overt and covert observation of live clinical sessions have on the number of social/ neutral verbal behaviors emitted by untrained speech clinicians and their respective clients enrolled Summer Term, 1980, in the Articulation and Language Clinic at Portland State University, Speech and Hearing Sciences. The Boone-Prescott Interactional analysis System (Boone and Prescott, 1972), a numerically coded system, was used to record clinician-client interactions. Data were obtained for a randomly selected five minute period from each of forty clinical sessions.

The purpose of this survey was to assess periodontists' attitudes toward pit and fissure sealants as an oral health service. A self-designed, 43-item questionnaire and a letter of transmittal were mailed to a random sample of periodontists belonging to the American Academy of Periodontics (N=S00). Data were obtained from 288 returned questionnaires (58 percent).

Data analysis suggested that periodontists' attitudes have changed over the past nine years in that: (1) more periodontists are assigning a high value of pit and fissure sealants in preventing dental caries, (2) more periodontists are using pit and fissure sealants to prevent dental caries, and …

A descriptive research approach and a self-designed questionnaire were used to obtain information about the effective clinical teacher as perceived by first and second year dental hygiene students. The Effective Teaching Behaviors Questionnaire was reviewed critically by several Old Dominion University dental hygiene faculty who's comments were used for revision. Once revisions were made, a pilot study was conducted on a sample of Old Dominion University dental hygiene students to determine the reliability and validity of the instrument.

This study investigates the feasibility of involving parents as evaluators using an objective screening test for their children who are 36 to 42 months of age. A more available and nonthreatening assessor is needed as physicians, dentists and other allied health professionals who are typically used to screen children for speech, language and hearing have not been effective with this age group. This is partially due to the limited contacts they have with these children and the environmental limitations for eliciting an adequate speech and language sample (Behrens, 1978; Webb, 197B; Hirsch, 1981).

To determine of the fetal liver functions as a blood reservoir, we measured liver blood volume under normal conditions and after hemorrhage and volume loading. Nineteen pregnant guinea pig sows and 54 near-term fetuses were injected intravenously with ⁵¹Cr-labeled red cells while the fetuses remained in utero. Ninety seconds later a 0.5-1.0 g sample of liver was garroted with a sharp wire into a tared tube with minimal blood loss. Surgical treatment of deep periodontal pockets associated with intraosseous defects has traditionally been performed either with or without resection of the osseous defect. A non-resective approach may provide more gain of attachment while a resective approach may give better pocket reduction. The increased pocket reduction following osseous resection is probably accomplished at the expense of some attachment loss in areas involved by the surgical procedure. Many organizations have a frequent need for employee training, and thus spend substantial sums of money on training. In an attempt to develop a model training program for use in such organizations, a self-contained videotape program was tested for its cost-effectiveness. It included rules describing the tasks, prerecorded videotapes showing correct and incorrect performance of those tasks, and score sheets for use by trainees while scoring the appropriateness of those performances.

The program produced significantly more task improvement than did lecture and discussion. The written and videotape components improved performance regardless of which was presented first. Once the skills were …

This study was a component analysis of several procedures commonly employed in behavioral vocational rehabilitation programs. The work rate of retarded subjects was assessed under four conditions: (1) baseline; (2) verbal prompts; (3) verbal prompts and social reinforcement; and (4) verbal prompts, social reinforcement, and monetary reinforcement. Subjects were four, moderately retarded, male clients of a sheltered workshop. The experimental task involved assembly of a metal knife composed of four separate pieces. The purpose of the study was to compare Rorschach results of hypnotically age regressed subjects with three groups of controls: deeply hypnotized, hypnotizable simulators, and minimally susceptible simulators. The study tested the null hypothesis that hypnotically age regressed subjects differ significantly from subjects in deep hypnosis, hypnotizable simulators, and minimally susceptible simulators on Rorschach scores when scored by the Exner Comprehensive System. A second null hypothesis was that there would be no difference between the age regressed subjects and the three control groups in correspondence to the Exner age norms.

The intervention package was sequentially introduced in three different instructional conditions in the following order: a group session, a one-to-one session, and a transition period. Word intelligibility scores of 21 listeners were used to test the hypothesis that speech intelligibility will vary systematically across speakers and fundamental frequency of electrolarynx vibration.

Twenty-one listeners transcribed audio recorded lists of CVC utterances produced with an electrolarynx by 3 speakers at each of five fundamental frequencies.

Comparative analysis of scores across frequencies and speakers were discussed in terms of:

a) source transmission characteristics of "electrolaryngeal" speech, b) implications for diagnosis/therapeusis of alaryngeal speakers.

Results indicated that intelligibility scores were significantly different between speakers and between frequencies within speakers. Maximum intelligibility scores were more highly correlated with certain frequencies …

No two hyperactive children are alike. They vary in personality, problems, strengths, weaknesses, and environment. Gluconeogenesis is a normal physiological response of an individual to low blood glucose levels by which proteins are utilized in order to synthesize new glucose. Gluconeogenic rates in diabetic and normal Chinese hamsters were measured, on four different occasions over a 24 hour period, by injecting a radio-labelled precursor (¹⁴C-lactate) into the animals. Then blood was tested for incorporation of the label into glucose. In the fed state, gluconeogenesis shows a circadian change in nondiabetic hamsters as well as in diabetic hamsters, with the diabetic hamsters showing a significantly greater gluconeogenic rate than the non-diabetic hamsters for every …

Human serum high density lipoprotein subclasses, HDL₂ and HDL₃ , were isolated by preparative salt density gradient ultracentrifugation and further analyzed by electrophoresis on a 4 to 15% concentration gradient polyacrylamide gel.

The separation of the major classes of serum lipoproteins was achieved after a single ultracentrifugation for 272,000 g at 15°c in a swinging bucket rotor. High resolution concentration gradient gel electrophoresis was found to be particularly suitable for the separation of lipoproteins. The isolation of HDL by precipitation methods, heparin-manganese and dextran-magnesium have also been evaluated in this study, and were found not to completely separate …

The cloning of DNA fragments derived from the (beta)-like globin gene cluster of normal and (beta)('+)-thalassemic individuals is described. These and other cloned human DNA fragments are employed to define the strucure and transcription of a family of interspersed, repetitive RNA polymerase III transcription units in human DNA. These data allow unequivocal identification of these transcription units with the Alu family of interspersed, repetitive DNA sequences. Comparison of these sequences to those of other primate and rodent interspersed repeats reveals that the primate sequence resembles in many respects a dimer of the rodent sequence. Mechanical expansion of the maxilla, at the midline suture, is a widely accepted orthodontic procedure used to gain arch width in certain types of maxillary deficient arches.

In animal research on the mandible, techniques using surgical separation at the symphysis with immediate expansion up to 12 mm, fixation with a metal splint, and autogenous bone transplanted into the expanded area, have been reported to be successful.

To date, no experiment utilizing slow mechanical expansion of the mandible at the symphysis has been reported.
