Augmentative And Alternative Communication In The Intensive Care Unit: A Service Delivery Model, Beverly Lloyd, Ann R. Beck, Amy L. Yacucci
Graduate Independent Studies - Communication Sciences and Disorders
Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) often find it difficult or impossible to verbally communicate due to mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy tubes or increased fatigue and delirium. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can provide ICU patients with a way to communicate during their ICU admittance. However, few hospitals currently have a systematic service delivery model in place for providing AAC tools and supports to ICU patients. This resource manual provides an outline for creating and implementing an AAC service delivery model along with AAC materials and resources appropriate for an ICU. Explanations of how each material is used, who they …
A Cross-Sectional Study Of Palliative Care Nurse Attitudes Toward Medical Assistance In Dying, Kathy A. Pfaff, Laurie A. Freeman
A Cross-Sectional Study Of Palliative Care Nurse Attitudes Toward Medical Assistance In Dying, Kathy A. Pfaff, Laurie A. Freeman
Nursing Publications
Background: In 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada decriminalized physician assisted dying for persons suffering grievous and irremediable medical conditions. In Canada, Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) is not provided by professional nurses; however, nurses are involved in providing physical care, education, and support for persons who are in various stages of the process. Its integration in palliative care settings has been controversial as MAiD is philosophically at odds with a palliative care approach that seeks to neither hasten nor prolong natural death. Therefore, it has potential to create moral and ethical distress among palliative care nurses who respect adherence …
Predicting First Term Success In An Associates Degree Nursing Program Using Cognitive And Noncognitive Factors, Richard Hilton Turner
Predicting First Term Success In An Associates Degree Nursing Program Using Cognitive And Noncognitive Factors, Richard Hilton Turner
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Since the late 1990s the nursing field has experienced increased demand for RN’s as well as a number of internal and external factors that have worsened this problem. College admissions officers have struggled to identify those students who are most likely to persist in an associate degree nursing (ADN) program. Estimates of programmatic attrition vary, but fall somewhere between 25-50%. A great deal of research has been expended in an attempt to determine which preadmission variables are most likely to indicate programmatic success. Unfortunately, no “best set” of admissions variables has been identified. The purpose of this research was to …

Faculty Authored Articles
Nurses must learn essential skills based in transcultural nursing to address issues of equity and social justice. The development of a model for nursing practice for an urban nurse-led drop-in center for individuals experiencing marginalization provides an opportunity for student nurses to learn transcultural nursing skills that shifts care from acknowledging the need of others to accompanying others on their health journey. The practice model provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate nursing students at Augsburg University to de-emphasize tasks and build relationships. Students learn to listen to others' stories and acknowledge their struggles in the margins. Four stages of …

IMPROVING COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CHILD LIFE SERVICES AND NURSING ON AN INPATIENT HOSPITAL UNIT
Effective communication between patient caregivers has been shown to reduce stress and trauma related to hospitalization and subsequent improved outcomes. An HCAHP score for a 30 bed acute inpatient pediatric unit illustrated the confusion faced by children as a result of nursing and care life specialists not working together as a team.
A root cause analysis identified a number of issues as to why patients were not benefitting fully from child life services. Several counter measures were instituted with the goals of improving the HCAHP score and …
Awareness And Knowledge Of Cochlear Implants Among Speech-Language Pathologists, Kimberly Ward, Kimberly Grubbs, Amitava Biswas
Awareness And Knowledge Of Cochlear Implants Among Speech-Language Pathologists, Kimberly Ward, Kimberly Grubbs, Amitava Biswas
Faculty Publications
Speech-Language Pathologists work closely with individuals who have received cochlear implants across a multitude of settings which include early childhood education centers, schools, hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. However, previous research suggests that Speech-Language Pathologists do not have the adequate skills or knowledge to work with clients who have received cochlear implants. To assess whether Speech-Language Pathologists in the state of Mississippi had similar results as in the previous studies, a questionnaire was used to assess knowledge on cochlear implants. The results are consistent with previous studies which suggest that there is an overall lack in cochlear implant competency, specifically …

Aim: To evaluate the 15‐years impact of the work‐study nursing upgrading programme in East Africa.
Background: Working nurses in Africa are often primary family income earners, with limited ability to leave jobs and upgrade qualifications. In 2001, the university established a work‐study upgrade programme for enrolled‐ and diploma‐level nurses, allowing them to upgrade their qualifications while continuing to work and support families. Donor partnerships provided scholarships to further increase programme access.
Design: A mixed method design was used involving an online alumni survey and 24 interviews and 23 focus groups with 172 purposively selected representatives of nursing graduates, employers, regulatory …
Perspectives From Home Care For Guiding Patients And Families To A Successful Transition Home After Same-Day Surgery, Jessica Lahr, Brenda Elliott
Perspectives From Home Care For Guiding Patients And Families To A Successful Transition Home After Same-Day Surgery, Jessica Lahr, Brenda Elliott
Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship
MANY PATIENTS TODAY go through surgical procedures in a 1 day/same-day/ambulatory surgery setting. The shift from inpatient care to caring for patients in their own homes after discharge places countless demands on patients and their families during recovery. Patients and families often mistake same-day surgery for same-day recovery and underestimate needs they may have upon discharge. In a sample of patients undergoing joint procedures, approximately 38% were discharged directly to home care postprocedure and more than 50% went to some type of facility before being discharged to home care. With trends moving toward more outpatient surgical procedures, and with the …

Nursing With The Heart Of Christ, Gwen E. Boda
Senior Honors Theses
Within the nursing profession it is necessary for the nurse to learn to have love, compassion, joy, peace, patience, humility, and integrity within his/her character. After reviewing numerous peer reviewed journals and personal examples, the following paper reveals how these traits – love, compassion, joy, peace, patience, humility, and integrity – are beneficial within the nursing profession. The paper defines the mentioned characteristics, shows how they can be used and implemented within the nursing practice, demonstrates how their implementation leads to greater patient care, and then compares these traits and actions to the character and person of Christ.

Improving Care For Children With Down Syndrome: Nursing Interventions, Hannah Burt
Improving Care For Children With Down Syndrome: Nursing Interventions, Hannah Burt
Honors Projects
Down Syndrome (DS) is a genetic disease that affects thousands of families. Children with DS often require more medical care since there are over 100 anomalies associated with DS (Philips & Boyd, 2015). Without proper knowledge of DS, it is difficult for healthcare workers to provide effective and relevant care. This paper will focus on physical differences of people with DS, emotional coping in families of children with DS, along with interventions for physical and behavioral health that nurses can implement.

Behavioral Transformation Through Inner Conflict Resolution: A New Nursing Theory, Thomas A. Sharon
Behavioral Transformation Through Inner Conflict Resolution: A New Nursing Theory, Thomas A. Sharon
Health Center (TUN) Publications and Research
The discipline of Hassidic Philosophy, which emanates from a particular movement in Orthodox Judaism called Hassidism, begins with the premise that all of creation is a dichotomous world of opposites with both sides in a perpetual conflict with one another. The human construct is therefore a dichotomous spiritual entity manifested in the physical world through a mind-body. One side of this soul is the Godly intellect giving rise to the human identity or self-awareness and the other side is the animal soul whose purpose is to galvanize the body. Having learned that this discipline provides its followers with tools for …
