AMNET XX Conferencia Internacional

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

Association between Smoking and Child Mortality Rate in Georgia Counties.

Background:

Despite the major advances in health care, child mortality is still a major concern in the United States and Georgia included. Studies have shown that smoking (especially secondhand smoke) can cause multiple health problems in children, including mortality.

Objective:

The study objective is to examine the association between smoking and child mortality rate in Georgia counties.

Methods:

This study used data from the 2021 County Health Rankings for Georgia State. The total number of counties analyzed in Georgia was 159. Descriptive statistics and linear regression analyses were conducted to …

Cancer Risk Perception Predictors For Total Body Skin Examinations: A Cross-Sectional Study Using Hints 2017 Data, Meghann Wheeler, Hanadi Hamadi Phd, Julie Williams Merten Phd

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Background: Despite the lack of national skin cancer screening recommendations, a total body skin examination by a healthcare provider may detect skin cancer earlier allowing for more effective treatment and better outcomes.

Objective: Examine prevalence, demographic, and cancer risk perceptions of adults who have had a skin examination performed by a healthcare provider.

Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults using the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). Logistic regressions were performed to identify associations between having a skin examination, risk perceptions, and demographic variables.

Results: Approximately 46% of the sample reported having a skin …

The Upper East Side Vs Central Harlem: What Is Responsible For The Dermatology Disparities That Shaped These Communities?, Zakiya Cush, Jeffrey Weinberg Sep 2019

The Upper East Side Vs Central Harlem: What Is Responsible For The Dermatology Disparities That Shaped These Communities?, Zakiya Cush, Jeffrey Weinberg

Annual SHSP Student Research and Scholarship Day

Very few studies have been done to understand why there is a paucity of dermatology practices in the Central Harlem (CH) community in Manhattan. This ecological and exploratory study will identify factors such as, geographical location, race, socioeconomic status, health care and medical education, as reasons why there is a disparity between the dermatology services in the CH community versus the Upper East Side (UES) of Manhattan. Thus, examining the differences in the neighborhoods as a mediator, it is hypothesized there is a need for increased dermatology practices to CH, as not catering to the clinical needs of a community …

Intersex Wildlife As Sentinels For Human Health And Endocrine Disruption Near Superfund Sites: A Systematic Review, Olivia Anderson, Melissa Perry May 2019

Intersex Wildlife As Sentinels For Human Health And Endocrine Disruption Near Superfund Sites: A Systematic Review, Olivia Anderson, Melissa Perry

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Fish and wildlife are often used as sentinels for human health. This systematic review examines one aspect of wildlife health, intersex (both ovarian and testicular tissue) animals and their prevalence or severity near Superfund sites (EPA designated toxic waste sites). The body of evidence demonstrates some evidence of this indicator and more research is needed, specifically a meta-analysis that is outside the scope of this study.

Persistent Appalachian Health Disparities: An Integrative Literature Review

Richard Trosper

Research Sponsor: Elizabeth P Anderson RN, PhD

Background: The area surrounding the Appalachian Mountains is referred to as Appalachia. There are 420 counties in 13 states which are considered to be part of the Appalachian region (Shapiro, 2001). Despite the progress made by the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, health in Appalachia still falls far behind that of other parts of America (Widner, 1990). This disparity has been termed and utilized in research in the realm of limited health care access, different diseases, and health related problems confused with the complexity …

Factors Influencing Distribution Of Prosthetic Devices In Iran: An Economic Analysis, Sarah Tensen Apr 2017

Factors Influencing Distribution Of Prosthetic Devices In Iran: An Economic Analysis, Sarah Tensen

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

An estimated 177,622 Iranians have suffered an injury resulting in amputation. Prosthetic devices in Iran are scarce due to wealth disparity, wars, and lack of vital resources. Without prosthetic devices, amputees face unemployment, homelessness, a lowered self-esteem and cannot fully participate in society. I examined economic factors influencing the distribution of prosthetic devices and reviewed articles that focus on healthcare costs, distributions and services, relationships between Iran and other countries, etiology of amputation to find a solution for the prosthetic distribution issues. I concluded issues resulted from high costs, unequal distributions of wealth and resources, unsafe conditions, and a deficit …
