Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Compassion fatigue, or secondary traumatic stress, is a state of physical and mental exhaustion caused by an inability to cope with the everyday environment that reduces the ability of the nurse to provide high-quality health care to a patient. The purpose of this staff education project, guided by Selye’s general adaption syndrome , was a 6-week, 30-second mindfulness exercise program to promote stress reduction for cardiac step-down and medical-surgical nurses. In this quantitative, pre- and posttest study, the Perceived Stress Scale was completed by a sample of 24 nurses who met the inclusion criteria. The practice focused whether educating nurses …
Quality Improvement Initiatives And Interventions For Decreasing Falls In The Hospital Setting, Fredlyn Lolange
Quality Improvement Initiatives And Interventions For Decreasing Falls In The Hospital Setting, Fredlyn Lolange
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Patient falls in health care settings are a widespread and severe problem, and they often happen as a result of a complex set of causes. In the United States, between 3.3 and 11.5 falls occur per 1,000 patient days. Reducing the incidence of falls in a health care setting would bring significant positive change and decrease the incidence of harm to patients in the hospital setting. This staff education project’s purpose is based on addressing falls, a safety concern and a health issue that continues to put patients at an increased risk. Theories used to inform the project include the …

Workplace stress is pervasive and changes to the postsecondary teaching and learning environment have contributed to stress among women faculty and adversely impacted their personal well-being. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how the constructs in the health belief model (HBM) play a role in the use of worksite wellness initiatives to manage stress and promote wellness among women postsecondary faculty in Ontario. The research questions were designed based on the HBM to examine the participants’ perceptions of severity and susceptibility to workplace stress, perceived benefits and barriers to participation, motivation to participate, and self-efficacy. Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe prevalence of halitosis has been rising in recent years and has become a social and public health problem worldwide. People’s concerns about halitosis can influence their psychological, social, and professional lives and lead to social isolation and anxiety. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine the association of socioeconomic status and marital status with genuine halitosis after adjusting for age, gender, and smoking among patients attending dental clinics in Khartoum, Sudan. The social-ecological model grounded the study. Secondary data from dental clinics in Khartoum, Sudan, were used with a sample size of 340. Data analysis included …
Impact Of An Outpatient Chronic Care Model On Uninsured Inpatient And Emergency Department Utilization, Jamie L. Judd
Impact Of An Outpatient Chronic Care Model On Uninsured Inpatient And Emergency Department Utilization, Jamie L. Judd
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Healthcare systems incur significant uncompensated costs due to uninsured chronic disease patients’ overutilization of urgent and emergent emergency care. This study was important because there was very little literature addressing the impact of the chronic care model (CCM) on reducing uncompensated healthcare system costs regarding patients with chronic disease. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether the Healthy Education Lifestyles Program (HELP) was of any significance to healthcare system’s cost of uninsured chronic disease patients. The theoretical foundation for the study was the CCM espoused by Wagner and colleagues. The research questions were to determine significant differences in …

Staff Education On Workplace Violence And Prevention Measures, Fatu Koroma
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Forensic nurses are essential in helping forensic mental health patients at an inpatient/outpatient forensic psychiatric health care facility. The practice gap that the forensic psychiatric health care facility experienced was a deficit in knowledge among forensic nurses on the importance of workplace violence and prevention. The practice-focused question guiding the project was to determine if education on the American Nurses Association’s workplace violence and prevention measures would increase forensic nurses’ and staff’s education scores. The purpose of the project was to close the gap by educating nurses and staff on measures to increase a safer environment. The instructional design was …

Black/African American Men’S Lived Experiences Of Workplace Colorism Bullying, Dr. Benjamin K. Spady Ph.D
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Bullying in the U.S. workplace is an ongoing issue that transcends industry boundaries due to perpetrators’ ineffectiveness in viewing all coworkers as equals. The purpose of this qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis study was to explore the lived experiences of Black/African American men who endure workplace colorism bullying. Critical race theory provided the conceptual framework, which labeled racism as an omnipresent systemic force. Semistructured interview data were collected from six Black/African American men who resided in the United States and who were bullied in the workplace within the past 20 years. Data were coded via open coding to discover themes. The …
