Objective: Adopting an external focus of attention has been shown to benefit motor performance and learning. However, the potential of optimizing attentional focus for improving prosthetic motor skills in lower limb prosthesis (LLP) users has not been examined. In this study, we investigated the frequency and direction of attentional focus embedded in the verbal instructions in a clinical prosthetic training setting.

Lateral reach testing has been established as useful in quantifying stability and fall-risk for older populations without limb loss,1 and has potential for providing useful information about fall-risk, recovery, and rehabilitation of individuals after unilateral trans-femoral amputation. Investigators sought to determine the feasibility and reliability of the Lateral Reach Test (LRT) in people with unilateral trans-femoral amputations. Nine individuals, aged 20-68, with a unilateral trans-femoral amputation were recruited for this study. Background and Purpose: Current research has revealed that as much as 52.4% of individuals with lower limb loss report falling at least once in the past year. Previous research has also indicated that rehabilitation, including physical therapy (PT), generally improves patient outcomes after definitive amputation. Socioeconomic status has been shown to be an important factor in accessing healthcare but has yet to be investigated in this population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of socioeconomic status and access to PT, and how limb loss affects mobility and fear of falling perception.
