Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In the study, 12 (6 females, 6 males) healthy adult New Zealand rabbits were used to examine the morphometrical andstereological values. White matter, gray matter and total segment volume of the segments in the pars lumbalis were calculated byCavalieri’s principle. The findings were grouped according to sexand statistically evaluated. As a result, 38% of the length of the spinalcord in rabbits belonged to the pars lumbalis. The morphometric parameters were not statistically different between male and femalerabbits (p > 0.05). The segment with the biggest volume was L5. White matter’s greatest volume was the L4 segment. The volume of graymatter was …

The agent causes a multisystemic infection in affected animals, especially acute hemorrhagic enteritis and fatal myocarditis in puppies. The study aimed to reveal the presence of virus in dogs with clinical symptoms of CPV-2 infection using virological, pathological, and immunohistochemical methods and make molecular characterization based on partial VP-2 gene of strains circulating in the region. As a result of PCR studies, 9 out of 16 rectal swab samples and 17 out of 38 blood samples were positive. A phylogenetic …

Effects Of Use Of Conventional And Sexed Semen On Conception Rate, Calf Sex, Calf Birth Weight, And Stillbirth In Holstein Heifers, Tahi̇r Bayril

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pregnancy rate is low in artificial insemination with sexed semen compared to conventional semen. This situation poses a major problem for dairy farms. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of semen type on conception rate, calf sex and birth weight, stillbirth, pregnancy loss, and postpartum maternal body weight (MBW) in Holstein heifers inseminated with sexed (n = 229), and conventional semen (n = 153). The female and male calf ratios of the heifers inseminated with sexed and conventional semen were found to be 88% to 54.8% and 12% to 45.2%, respectively. There was a significant difference …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of the present study was to determine some hematological parameters (RBC, WBC, HCT, HGB, MCH, MCHC, MCV, and PLT), the presence and percentages of ANAE and AcP-ase positivities in leukocytes and the differential leukocyte count in Kivircik sheep. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of 40 (rams = 20; ewes= 20) healthy, 1-year-old sheep. MCH and MCHC values were found statistically higher in rams than ewes (p < 0.05). Mean percentages of ANAE-positive PBL were defined as 74.16 ± 11.94% in ewes and 70.33 ± 8.39% in rams. It was not determined any significant changes according to sex. On the other hand, the percentages of ACP were determined as 67.12 ± 6.54% in ewes and 66.71 ± 6.58% in rams. It was not found any significant differences according to sex. For ANAE enzyme activity, lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, and eosinophilic granulocytes showed a positive reaction. For ACP enzyme activity, although lymphocytes presented positivity, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils were negative. The ratio of lymphocyte, monocyte, neutrophile, eosinophile, and basophile of Kivircik ewes and rams were found as 64.35 ± 5.74%, 60.64 ± 8.85%; 3.41 ± 1.27%, 3.82 ± 1.42%; 27.58 ± 5.46%, 30.94 ± 8.71%; 2.41 ± 0.93%, 2.88 ± 1.45%; 1.76 ± 0.75%, 1.29 ± 0.58%, respectively. The difference between mean values was not found significant according to sex (p > 0.05). In conclusion, our study showed that enzyme histochemical methods can be used for identifying peripheral blood cells and can provide facilitates for early diagnosis of immune system-related disorders …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Dirofilaria immitis (D. immitis); is a parasitic zoonosis with a prevalence of 53.8%, whose intermediate host is mosquitoes (Anopheles, Aedes, Culex, Taeniorhychus, Mansonia and Armigenes), final hosts are carnivores (dog, cat, fox, etc.) and humans. The causative agent settles in the pulmonary arteries and causes pulmonary hypertension, which can progress to congestive heart failure. Cardiac troponins (cTn), which have recently been used in veterinary cardiology, are considered the gold standard because of their high sensitivity and specificity for myocardial injury. In the study, high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) levels in healthy …

Sheep Welfare During Transport And Slaughter In Bulgaria - Impact Of Welfare On Slaughter Carcass And Meat Quality: A Review, Nikolay Todorov Ivanov

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present work aimed to review the state of sheep welfare in Bulgaria during transportation and slaughter and to evaluate its relationship with slaughter carcass and meat quality. Over the last few years, animal welfare has become increasingly important. Normative documents related to welfare during rearing, transport, and slaughter of animals have been developed and promulgated. A major percentage of these animals are reared for meat production, but attempts to minimize stress and pain during transport and slaughter should be made. Stress reduction and pain control improve animal welfare and also impact carcass and meat quality. This overview demonstrates that …
