COVID-19 emerged at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, China, and spread rapidly around the world causing many deaths. Due to the intercontinental escalation in the epidemic, while WHO declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020, our country's first case was diagnosed. Before this, the MoH established the Operations Center against possible risks regarding the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Plan on January 10, 2020 and formed the Scientific Committee, which has a critical importance in epidemic management. National and Provincial Pandemic Coordination Boards were established within the scope of this plan. Fast, effective and frequently updated decisions were implemented. The epidemic …

Covid-19 And Sepsis, Zeli̇ha Koçak Tufan, Bi̇rcan Kayaaslan, Mervyn Mer Jan 2021

Covid-19 And Sepsis, Zeli̇ha Koçak Tufan, Bi̇rcan Kayaaslan, Mervyn Mer

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a major alteration in the medical literature including the sepsis discussion. From the outset of the pandemic, various reports have indicated that although there are some unique features pertinent to COVID-19, many of its acute manifestations are similar to sepsis caused by other pathogens. As a consequence, the old definitions now require consideration of this new etiologic agent, namely SARS-CoV-2. Although the pathogenesis of COVID-19 has not been fully explained, the data obtained so far in hospitalized patients has revealed that serum cytokine and chemokine levels are high in severe COVID-19 patients, similar to those …

Dopamine Transporter Spect Imaging In Parkinson's Disease And Parkinsoniandisorders, Ümi̇t Özgür Akdemi̇r, Hati̇ce Ayşe Tokçaer Bora, Lütfi̇ye Özlem Atay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The dopamine transporter (DAT) imaging provides an objective tool for the assessment of dopaminergic function of presynaptic terminals which is valuable for the differential diagnosis of parkinsonian disorders related to a striatal dopaminergic deficiency from movement disorders not related a striatal dopaminergic deficiency. DAT imaging with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) can be used to confirm or exclude a diagnosis of dopamine deficient parkinsonism in cases where the diagnosis is unclear. It can also detect the dopaminergic dysfunction in presymptomatic subjects at risk for Parkinson's disease (PD) since the reduced radiotracer binding to DATs in striatum is already present in …

Basal And Pentagastrin-Stimulated Calcitonin Cut-Off Values In Diagnosis Of Preoperativemedullary Thyroid Cancer, Emi̇ne Kartal Baykan, Mehmet Erdoğan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) originates from parafollicular cells (C cell) and produces calcitonin (CT). Basal serum CT was used in the diagnosis and treatment of MTC. If basal CT level is 100 pg/mL or higher, it is likely to have MTC, but if basal CT level is below 10 pg/mL, the probability of developing thyroid disease is low. In cases with basal CT level between 10-100 pg/mL, pentagastrin-stimulated (PS) CT level is studied to evaluate MTC and C cell hyperplasia (CHH). This study aimed to determine cut-off value for basal and PS peak CT level for diagnosis of MTC. …

We developed a new grading system called fat necrosis deposit-CTSI (FND-CTSI), which was the sum of FND and CTSI scores. The relationship between grading systems and mortality, length of hospital-intensive care unit stay, surgical …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Tuberculosis is a public health problem that still remains significant. For prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis more effective novel biomarkers are needed. MicroRNAs can regulate innate and adaptive immune responses, alter host-pathogen interactions, and affect progression of diseases. The relationship between microRNA expression and active pulmonary tuberculosis (APT) has not yet been investigated in the Turkish population. We aimed to test the potential diagnostic value of some microRNAs whose levels were previously reported to be altered in APT patients. Materials and methods: Using two different references (U6 and miR-93), we compared the expression levels of potentially important microRNAs …
