Patient Symptoms And Magnetic Resonance Imaging Correlationin Temporomandibular Joint Internal Derangement, Osman Akdağ, Gökçe Yildiran, Mehtap Karameşe

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangements consist of reduced and nonreduced disc dislocations and are often diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The main symptom of these derangements is TMJ pain. This study aimed to evaluate whether there is a correlation between TMJ pain and disc dislocation. Materials and methods: One hundred and four patients experiencing pain were evaluated retrospectively with the examination charts that we use routinely in our clinics and MRI. Patients were separated into two main groups as MRI(+) and MRI(-) groups according to their internal derangement findings in MRI. Mean VAS levels were compared between these …

Hemostatic Effects Of Adrenaline And Ankaferd (Blood Stopper) During Orthodontic Attachment Bonding, Selen Adi̇loğlu, Alper Aktaş, Aslihan Zeynep Öz, Hakan El

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Moisture prevention during the bonding of orthodontic attachments on impacted teeth is crucial for accomplishment. It was aimed to compare the hemostatic effects of adrenaline and Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) during the surgical exposure of the impacted maxillary canine. Materials and methods: The study consists of 20 patients, whose orthodontic treatments were outlined with the surgical exposure of maxillary impacted canine. Patients were divided into groups of 10; where each group was treated with one of the two medicines to control bleeding. Group A was treated with adrenaline, and group B was treated with Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS). The …

Comparison Of The E Ects Of Diclofenac Potassium And Tenoxicam On Postoperative Pain, Swelling, And Trismus Following Third Molar Surgery, Ahmet Taylan Çebi̇, Meti̇n Berk Kasapoğlu, Seli̇n Eren, Çeti̇n Kasapoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aimed to compare two nonsteroidal antiin ammatory agents in relation to pain, swelling, and trismus following impacted third molar surgery. Materials and methods: The study was a randomized and a double-blinded study and included 50 healthy individuals. A er the operation, patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups in which diclofenac potassium and tenoxicam were used. Impacted third molars were surgically extracted with local anesthesia. Pain was assessed postoperatively by visual analog scale at the 2nd, 6th, 8th, 12th, 24th, and 48th hours and on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th days. Swelling was evaluated using the method …

Ankaferd Blood Stopper With Antibiofilm Potential Successfully Inhibits The Extracellularmatrix Degradation Enzymes And Promotes Wound Healing Of 3t3 Fibroblasts In Vitro, Ruki̇ye Boran, Tuba Baygar, Nurdan Saraç, Aysel Uğur Jan 2018

Ankaferd Blood Stopper With Antibiofilm Potential Successfully Inhibits The Extracellularmatrix Degradation Enzymes And Promotes Wound Healing Of 3t3 Fibroblasts In Vitro, Ruki̇ye Boran, Tuba Baygar, Nurdan Saraç, Aysel Uğur

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The potential inhibitory effects of Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) against biofilm formation of oral microorganisms and its capacity for collagenase, hyaluronidase, and elastase inhibitions that have important roles in wound healing have been investigated. Materials and methods: The wound healing potential was determined by its inhibition ability on collagenase, hyaluronidase, and elastase enzyme activities and was evaluated via scratch wound healing assay on murine 3T3 fibroblasts. The antibiofilm activity was tested against eight oral microorganisms using the crystal violet staining method. Results: At 10% ABS successfully inhibited the biofilm formation of the tested microorganisms. Enzyme inhibition analysis revealed that …

Association Of Serum Leptin With Serum Estradiol In Relation To Breast Carcinogenesis: A Comparative Case-Control Study Between Pre- And Postmenopausal Women, Syed Danish Haseen Ahmed, Farah Idrees, Muhammad Ahsan, Aziza Khanam, Naheed Sultan, Naheed Akhter Jan 2018

Association Of Serum Leptin With Serum Estradiol In Relation To Breast Carcinogenesis: A Comparative Case-Control Study Between Pre- And Postmenopausal Women, Syed Danish Haseen Ahmed, Farah Idrees, Muhammad Ahsan, Aziza Khanam, Naheed Sultan, Naheed Akhter

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aims of this study were to observe the interhormonal relationship of serum leptin with serum estradiol and to compare pre- and postmenopausal women for possible implications in breast carcinogenesis. Materials and methods: This comparative case-control study encompasses 175 breast cancer patients and 175 age-, sex-, and BMI- matched healthy controls. For comparison, the subjects were divided into pre- and postmenopausal groups according to their menstrual history. Blood samples were analyzed for serum leptin and serum estradiol by the ELISA method. Results: Higher mean values of serum estrogen and leptin were observed in breast cancer cases among both the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Abnormalities in oral mucosal immunity contribute to complex pathogenesis of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSjS). We aimed to measure saliva and serum levels of caspase-1, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) in patients with pSjS. Materials and methods: We studied 43 pSjS patients fulfilling the AECG criteria and 30 age/sex-matched healthy controls, as well as 39 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients as a disease control group. ESSDAI scores were less than seven in all patients with pSjS, indicating low disease activity. Quantitative analyses were made in serum and whole saliva samples. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 19.0. …

Background/aim: In this experimental study, we aimed to evaluate the late period effects of the combination of Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS), which has bone wound healing effects, and ß-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) on the regeneration of bone tissue through histopathological, immunohistochemical, and radiological (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry - DEXA) methods in nondiabetic rats. Materials and methods: Sixty-four Wistar albino male rats were used. In the calvaria of the rats, a bone defect 7.0 mm in diameter was created. These rats were divided into 4 different groups. Group 1 was the control group without any treatment, a 0.125 mL B-TCP graft was …
