Summary Of Sexual Health Links With Chronic Disease In Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Males, Australian Indigenous Healthinfonet Jan 2021

Summary Of Sexual Health Links With Chronic Disease In Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Males, Australian Indigenous Healthinfonet

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This Summary is based on the Review of sexual health issues linked with cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males (the ‘Review’) [1] published by the Australian Indigenous HealthBulletin in 2021. It provides information about the male sexual health conditions of erectile dysfunction (ED) and low testosterone, and their links to chronic disease, specifically cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It outlines:

  • the causes and symptoms of ED and low testosterone
  • how common ED and low testosterone are among the Australian male population (there are limited data available about Aboriginal …

Bulsara, Christopher Etherton-Beer, Beverley Ewens, Olivia Gallagher, Renee M. Graham, Karen Gullick, Sue Haydon, Kim-Huong Nguyen, Bev O'Connell, Karla Seaman, Jeff Hughes

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Introduction Frailty and pain are associated with adverse patient clinical outcomes and healthcare system costs. Frailty and pain can interact, such that symptoms of frailty can make pain assessment difficult and pain can exacerbate the progression of frailty. The prevalence of frailty and pain and their concurrence in hospital settings are not well understood, and patients with cognitive impairment are often excluded from pain prevalence studies due to difficulties assessing their pain. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of frailty and pain in adult inpatients, including those with cognitive impairment, in an acute care private metropolitan …

Modelling Biological Age Based On Plasma Peptides In Han Chinese Adults, Weijie Cao, Deqiang Zheng, Guohua Wang, Jie Zhang, Siqi Ge, Manjot Singh, Hao Wang, Manshu Song, Dong Li, Wei Wang, Youxin Wang Jan 2020

Modelling Biological Age Based On Plasma Peptides In Han Chinese Adults, Weijie Cao, Deqiang Zheng, Guohua Wang, Jie Zhang, Siqi Ge, Manjot Singh, Hao Wang, Manshu Song, Dong Li, Wei Wang, Youxin Wang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Age-related disease burdens increased over time, and whether plasma peptides can be used to accurately predict age in order to explain the variation in biological indicators remains inadequately understood. Here we first developed a biological age model based on plasma peptides in 1890 Chinese Han adults. Based on mass spectrometry, 84 peptides were detected with masses in the range of 0.6-10.0 kDa, and 13 of these peptides were identified as known amino acid sequences. Five of these thirteen plasma peptides, including fragments of apolipoprotein A-I (m/z 2883.99), fibrinogen alpha chain (m/z 3060.13), complement C3 (m/z 2190.59), complement C4-A (m/z 1898.21), …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Introduction

The Modification of Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle (MODEL) study aims to examine the impact of providing visualisation and pictorial representation of advanced structural vascular disease (abdominal aortic calcification), on ‘healthful’ improvements to diet and lifestyle. This paper reports the protocol for the process evaluation for the MODEL study.

Methods and analysis

The overall aim of the process evaluation is to understand the processes that took place during participation in the MODEL study trial and which elements were effective or ineffective for influencing ‘healthful’ behavioural change, and possible ways of improvement to inform wider implementation strategies. A mixed-method approach will …

Summary Of Tobacco Use Among Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Peoples, Australian Indigenous Healthinfonet Jan 2020

Summary Of Tobacco Use Among Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Peoples, Australian Indigenous Healthinfonet

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The Summary of tobacco use among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is a plain language publication that provides summarised and updated information from the Review of tobacco use among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples(2020). It provides key information about tobacco use among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in a style that is easy to engage with and is particularly useful for health workers and those studying in the field as a quick source of general information about:

  • the context of tobacco use and how common tobacco use is
  • how smoking affects health
  • the burden of disease …

Igg Glycosylation Profile And The Glycan Score Are Associated With Type 2 Diabetes In Independent Chinese Populations: A Case-Control Study, Zhiyuan Wu, Haibin Li, Di Liu, Lixin Tao, Jie Zhang, Baolu Liang, Xiangtong Liu, Xiaonan Wang, Xia Li, Youxin Wang, Wei Wang, Xiuhua Guo

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Background. The relationship between the IgG glycan panel and type 2 diabetes remains unclear in Chinese population. We aimed to investigate the association of the IgG glycan profile and glycan score with type 2 diabetes. Methods. In the discovery population, 162 individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 162 matched controls from Beijing health management cohort were included. We analyzed the IgG glycan profile and composed a glycan score for type 2 diabetes. Findings were validated in the replication population from Beijing Xuanwu community cohort (280 cases and 508 controls). Area under curve (AUC) using 10-fold and bootstrap validation, net …

Does Nurses’ Health Affect Their Intention To Remain In Their Current Position?, Lin Perry, Robyn Gallagher, Christine M. Duffield, David Sibbritt, Jen Bichel-Findlay, Rachel Nicholls Jan 2016

Does Nurses’ Health Affect Their Intention To Remain In Their Current Position?, Lin Perry, Robyn Gallagher, Christine M. Duffield, David Sibbritt, Jen Bichel-Findlay, Rachel Nicholls

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Aim:

To investigate and describe nurses’ and midwives’ physical health, rates of symptoms and disease, and to determine if these factors contribute to intention to leave.

Background:

The nursing and midwifery workforce is ageing yet little is known about their physical health or its relationship to intention to leave.

Methods:

An online survey of health and work-related assessments was distributed through the New South Wales Nurses and Midwives Association and professional contacts.

Results:

Nurses and midwives (n = 5041) reported good-very good health overall. With 22.2% intending to leave in the next 12 months, older age, better …

The Health And Health Behaviours Of Australian Metropolitan Nurses: An Exploratory Study, L. Perry, R. Gallagher, Christine Duffield Jan 2015

The Health And Health Behaviours Of Australian Metropolitan Nurses: An Exploratory Study, L. Perry, R. Gallagher, Christine Duffield

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Background: Nurses make up the largest component of the health workforce and provide the majority of patient care. Most health education is delivered by nurses, who also serve as healthy living and behavioural role models. Anything that diminishes their health status can impact their credibility as role models, their availability and ability to deliver quality care, and is potentially disadvantageous for the health of the population. Study aims were to investigate nurses' overall health and the presence of chronic disease; to describe nurses' health-related behaviours and to compare them to those of the general population, with both groups matched by …
