Objective The aim of this study was to assess CD95 expression on peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, both under interferon treatment and without interferon treatment, in comparison with a control group to assess its role in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C disease. Background Egypt has the highest prevalence of HCV in the world, estimated nationally at 14.7%. Fas (APO-1/CD95)-mediated apoptosis plays an important role in liver cell destruction in viral hepatitis. Participants and methods Peripheral blood lymphocytes were isolated from 15 patients with chronic HCV under interferon treatment and from 20 patients …

Objective The aim of this study was to identify the serum markers and the use of abdominal ultrasound for early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic viral hepatitis C virus infection. Background HCC meets the criteria of a tumor that would benefit from a surveillance program, but the poor sensitivity and specificity of currently available tools have prevented widespread implementation of surveillance. Patients and methods This study included 110 patients, age from 23 to 70 years, from Menoufia University hospitals during the period from July 2011 to November 2013. They were classified into three groups: group I, …

Objective This study was conducted to focus on the intrafamilial transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and to determine the impact of a suggested health education program on the knowledge, the attitude and the practice of the participants regarding the prevention of intrafamilial transmission of HCV. Background The HCV is one of the most important causes of chronic liver disease in Egypt . Information on the current magnitude and the rate of intrafamilial transmission of HCV and its risk factors in Egypt is scarce. Patients and methods This study was a cross-sectional analytic study with an intervention (health education …
