Mentha (Lamiaceae) Phylogenetic Analysis Using Chloroplast Trnl-Trnf And Nuclear Ribosomal Dna Its Sequences, Jiranan Bunsawatt Dec 2002

Mentha (Lamiaceae) Phylogenetic Analysis Using Chloroplast Trnl-Trnf And Nuclear Ribosomal Dna Its Sequences, Jiranan Bunsawatt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Mentha (Nepetoideae, Lamiaceae) is a taxonomically complex genus that includes economically important members such as spearmint and peppermint and species of global conservation interest. Mentha is considered challenging systematically due to its high incidence of polyploidy, diverse morphology, variation in base chromosome number, and frequent interspecific hybridization. Our objectives were to test the monophyly of Mentha and each of its traditionally recognized sections, assess phylogenetic relationships of the Mentha species, test hypotheses of hybridization for the putative stabilized allopolyploids (M spicata and M. canadensis), and determine the ancestral base chromosome number using DNA sequence data from the chloroplast trnL-trnF and …

Estimating Population Numbers Of Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) In Eastern Kentucky Using Microsatellite Analysis, Kelly Vowels Aug 2002

Estimating Population Numbers Of Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) In Eastern Kentucky Using Microsatellite Analysis, Kelly Vowels

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Black bears (Ursus americanus) occur sporadically in eastern Kentucky, and there is some evidence that a breeding population exists. In order to establish management practices to enhance the black bear population in Kentucky, information about this population is needed. However, until recently, no population size estimate has been available. Gathering information on black bears is difficult because black bears are elusive animals. The development of new molecular methods has made it easier to track and gather information on black bear populations, including estimates of population size. Molecular markers are particularly useful in that they do not require physical contact with …

Nuclear Transformation Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii To Allow For Studies On Circadian Expression Of The Β-Tubulin Gene, Mohammed Khan Aug 2002

Nuclear Transformation Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii To Allow For Studies On Circadian Expression Of The Β-Tubulin Gene, Mohammed Khan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Circadian rhythms are rhythms that are capable of free-running in constant conditions with a period of approximately 24 hours, that are able to compensate temperature effects on their periods, and that have the ability to entrain to daily light-dark and/or temperature cycle. In order to explore the circadian output pathway that regulates β-tubulin gene expression in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a nuclear transformation of the organism was performed with a β-tubulin promoter:reporter gene construct. To increase the efficiency of the selection, a cotransformation procedure was adapted with ble, an antibiotic resistance gene. To achieve maximum transformation efficiency, a cell wall-less mutant of …

Attitudes And Beliefs Of Successful Adult Illicit Drug Users: A Qualitative Analysis Of Drugnet Survey Respondents, Kathryn Steward

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

America is a drug-oriented society. For many years people have used drugs for recreational purposes. However, there has been ongoing controversy regarding drug abuse and drug use. The purpose of this study was to assess attitudes and beliefs of successful adult drug users as it relates to drug reform, effectiveness of current drug laws, and problem experiences that they may have encountered as a result of their drug use. A qualitative study utilizing three open-ended questions regarding the aforementioned areas was conducted to analyze the 156 individuals' responses. The respondents were found to be in agreement on the ineffectiveness of …

Distributive Justice And Punishment In Team Sports, David Bucur May 2002

Distributive Justice And Punishment In Team Sports, David Bucur

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Distributive justice outcomes of punishment in an intercollegiate team sport setting were investigated. Male intercollegiate athletes (#=148) participating in the NAIA National Soccer Championship Tournament responded to one of eight scenarios and reported perceived fairness to player, fairness to teammates, deterrence to future player misconduct, and deterrence to future teammate misconduct. The results indicated that athletes perceive consistent distribution of punishment as more fair than conditional distribution of punishment; consistently distributed punishment is perceived to be more likely to deter future misconduct than conditional punishment; punishment, in general, is perceived as more fair when the violation committed is severe as …

Attitudes And Knowledge Of Nurses Regarding Herbal Medications, Janie Davis May 2002

Attitudes And Knowledge Of Nurses Regarding Herbal Medications, Janie Davis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Much information has been published regarding herbal medication use. However, information is limited on how nurses incorporate this information into their practice, communicate information to the client, or collaborate with physicians to prevent drug/herbal interactions. The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes and knowledge of nurses regarding the use of herbal remedies at various levels of practice. According to Henderson's Theory of Basic Care Components, the nurse has a responsibility to assess client needs, help clients meet health needs, and provide a safe environment for the client to perform activities unaided. These interventions help the client become …

An Evaluation Of The Recreation Interest Of Hopkins County Middle School Students, Tricia Jordan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study is to identify potential recreational activity interests of Hopkins County middle school students, thereby assisting the Hopkins County Family YMCA in teen program development. In addition, the study investigates potential constraints these students encounter. One hundred and twenty-five students from four public middle schools participated in the recreation needs assessment. The recreation needs assessment instrument consisted of five activity categories (arts and crafts activities; dance, drama, and music activities; literary activities; nature activities; and sports and games). Category activity selections were limited to those activities the Hopkins County Family YMCA was willing and/or capable of …

Prevention Of Radiation-Induced Skin Reactions In Breast Cancer External Irradiation, Cathy Ammerman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Radiation dermatitis is a common side effect of external beam radiation therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of applying an aloe vera based skin gel to the target area skin in preventing the development of radiation dermatitis to postlumpectomy/ mastectomy patients receiving external beam radiation therapy in an ambulatory radiation-oncology clinic in the southeastern region of the United States. In this descriptive correlational study, a convenience sample of willing participants (n=18) was followed from initial treatment through the one-month follow-up examination to assess the intensity of their skin reaction. Five research questions were examined pertaining …

A Description Of Female, Adult Recreational Drug Users: A Sub-Analysis Of The Drugnet Survey, Leslie Bickett Mar 2002

A Description Of Female, Adult Recreational Drug Users: A Sub-Analysis Of The Drugnet Survey, Leslie Bickett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Drug abuse can be a serious, chronic, and relapsing health problem for both men and women. Among women, however, drug use and abuse present an array of different challenges to health and well-being. In addition, the health of women has been given less attention than the health of men. Little research has been conducted to identify and describe the invisible or hidden population of drug users, not abusers, who are not in treatment or incarcerated on drugrelated charges. The purpose of this study is to provide a descriptive and behavioral profile of adult, female, recreational drug users (i.e., not abusers). …
