Hepatitis C Management For Individuals In Custody, Oluronke D. Akinola
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a pathogen that spreads through blood and causes hepatitis C disease, a liver infection. Early infection symptoms are rare, making it a silent killer. HCV, the chronic liver disease accounts for half of all hepatocellular carcinoma cases and is the leading cause of liver transplantation in the US. This quality improvement project aimed to create an educational toolkit for the Department of Correction staff working with individuals in custody refusing HCV treatment. The education tools comprised an infographic flyer (English and Spanish) to teach individuals in custody about HCV treatment and a PowerPoint presentation …
Identifying Patients Suffering From Housing Instability In The Emergency Department, Jarvis D. Roberts
Identifying Patients Suffering From Housing Instability In The Emergency Department, Jarvis D. Roberts
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Homelessness is the most visible form of housing instability in the United States of America. Yet, millions of people across our nation live in unstable housing, which consists of temporary housing, shelters, outside encampments, and vehicles. Many citizens facing these types of insecurities live paycheck to paycheck and are one health crisis or emergency away from financial ruin. The COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, and slow hourly wage growth have exacerbated this situation. This project aimed to construct a screening tool to identify patients suffering from housing instability in the emergency department setting and provide them with community resources.
A Review Of The Effects Of Different Types Of Stigmas On The Retention Rates Of Patients In Medication-Assisted Treatment And How To Combat The Problem, Pamela Cox
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
It is difficult to turn on the news without hearing about the opioid epidemic or a recent opioid overdose. There is hope because there is a treatment to help prevent this epidemic. That treatment is known as medication-assisted therapy (MAT), where patients can present and, if they meet the criteria, can be given a prescription for buprenorphine/naloxone combination medication. Treatment with buprenorphine/naloxone has been shown to be highly effective treatment for substance use disorder (SUD). Even though it has been proven that this combination works, less than 20% of patients diagnosed with SUD present for treatment. This study focused on …

Problem Description
The opioid epidemic has been ravishing communities in the United States for nearly two decades, resulting in opioid misuse, dependence, and overdose-related deaths. Healthcare providers have inadvertently fueled the epidemic by overprescribing opioid medications contributing to 40% of the opioid overdose-related deaths. One in every 48 patients who receives an opioid medication for the first time will become a chronic user of these medications. Furthermore, 6% of all surgical patients will continue chronic use of opioid medications 90 days after their surgeries regardless of absence of pain. With over 50 million surgical cases performed each year in the …
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses And Healthcare Disparities: Understanding The Impact Of Implicit Bias, Marla Lepley-Starr
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses And Healthcare Disparities: Understanding The Impact Of Implicit Bias, Marla Lepley-Starr
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Introduction: Disparities in healthcare have long been a challenge for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members. More recently, population health-focused efforts have been implemented to manage everincreasing rates of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, as well as lack of transportation, limited access to care, and poverty (North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services [NCDHHS], 2019). Racism, sexism, ageism, sizeism, etc., are present in the healthcare setting and manifests in implicit bias during care delivery. This can manifest as beliefs, behaviors/practices, and emotions of the provider (Paradies et al., 2014). Research is limited related to the …
Dexmedetomidine As An Adjunct Therapy To Neuraxial Anesthesia In Labor And Delivery, Anthony Nungesser
Dexmedetomidine As An Adjunct Therapy To Neuraxial Anesthesia In Labor And Delivery, Anthony Nungesser
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) declared the opioid crisis an epidemic, and in 2017 it was declared a public health emergency. In labor and delivery, neuraxial anesthesia has been used for over a hundred years to provide pain relief for parturients. Although many alternatives have been studied, opioids are the most frequently used local anesthetic adjuvants, and their use in neuraxial blocks has evolved over the last 50 years (Swain et al., 2017). While neuraxial opioids have proven to be an effective adjunct for pain relief, they are associated with undesirable side effects as well as the …

One out of every six women has been a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime. Sexual violence has long-term effects on victims including post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal ideations and/or attempted suicide, substance use disorder, work and/or family life struggles, unplanned pregnancy, and/or sexually transmitted infections (STI).
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to improve the utilization of the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission Program (ACVCC) for victims …
Improving Staff Education On Lung Cancer Screening At The Illinois Correctional Facilities For The Justice-Involved Individuals, Natalie Bethel, Jillian Youngquist
Improving Staff Education On Lung Cancer Screening At The Illinois Correctional Facilities For The Justice-Involved Individuals, Natalie Bethel, Jillian Youngquist
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Justice-involved individuals are at an increased risk of developing chronic health conditions, including lung cancer. Literature supports the practice of using an annual low-dose CT scan to screen for lung cancer. Illinois Correctional Facilities lacked a lung cancer screening protocol for justice-involved individuals. Lung cancer screening guidelines were approved for the facilities, however, the time frame for implementation was unclear. This DNP project focused on evidenced based guidelines for lung cancer screening with education tools for staff members to prepare them for implementation. Staff was presented with a pre-test, PowerPoint presentation, and a post-test to evaluate lung cancer screening knowledge. …

Human trafficking (HT) is an epidemic within the United States, resulting in what could be deemed a public health crisis. HT remains concealed due to the criminal, secretive nature of the enterprise, in addition to inconsistent definitions, historically perpetuated biases, and stigmas, in addition to an overall lack of education, knowledge, and awareness. Data around HT are also minimal due to these same barriers. The majority of HT victims report accessing the emergency department and hospital during their time of trafficking, placing healthcare professionals in a unique position to recognize and assist victims. Studies indicate that few healthcare professionals have …

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the US, and it can lead to minor health problems such as genital warts and serious problems like cancer in men and women. HPV vaccination can effectively prevent HPV-related cancers and is recommended by ACIP to individuals aged 9-26. HPV vaccine uptake is low among adolescents and young adults in the US. College students have a window of opportunity to catch up with their HPV immunizations, and are often uninformed about HPV, the HPV vaccine, their eligibility to receive the HPV vaccine, and where they can obtain the HPV vaccine. An …

The Development Of A Pain Medication Management Protocol, Kirstie Mcgrath, Jane M. Brown, Shannon D. Walle
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Implementation of an organization-wide pain management policy incorporates a multifaceted team approach that could lead to improved patient outcomes. The absence of a standardized opioid prescribing policy within a healthcare organization has led to individual departments adopting their own guidelines. Management of an individual patient’s pain medication is often met with reluctance from providers when a patient is transferred from another department leaving the patient with inadequate care.

It is well-documented that oncology patients experience greater rates of suicidality including suicidal ideation, actions, or completions, as compared to the general population. The small, rural county which was the setting for this project has a higher rate of lung and colon cancers as compared to regional, state, and national rates. A review of the literature revealed best practices for suicide screening including universal education and screening and targeted education and screening for at-risk populations. The rate for suicides in the county is also higher than the rates for the region, state, and nation. The purpose of this project was …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Idaho ranks last of all states for per capita spending on mental health treatment (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2014). In Idaho, individuals in crisis who suffer from mental illness or Substance Use Disorder (SUD) have few options for care. They often utilize the most expensive treatment through the emergency department, inpatient services, or by going to jail. Idaho has the 7th highest suicide rate in the nation (Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho, 2015), while Region 1 of Idaho has the second highest suicide rate in the state from 2010-2014 (Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho, 2015).
Methods: This …
