Increasing The Optimal Usage Of The Gad-7 And Phq-9 Screening Tools To Better Detect Co-Occurring Disorders In An Alcohol Use Disorder Clinic, Lauren Swansick

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Background: Co-occurring disorders include substance use disorders and mental health conditions. These disorders affect 21.5 million individuals. Mental health screening tools, such as the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), are effective in screening individuals for depressive and anxiety mental health conditions within addiction settings.

Problem: Of those with an anxiety disorder, 20-40% will be diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Depressive disorders are the most common mental health conditions that can occur alongside an AUD. A literature review revealed that the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 are used in addiction treatment settings; however, not as …

Trauma-Informed Treatment For Alcohol Use Disorder: Improving Long-Term Recovery, Aline M. Bales

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background: This DNP project aimed to assess the feasibility of implementing trauma-informed care to Ria Health's telehealth AUD MAT recovery treatment model for patients with co-occurring PTSD, targeting high relapse rates due to cravings. Methods: An integrated review assessed the prevalence of co-occurrence of AUD and PTSD, assessed interest in Ria Health patients, patients recruited from Ria Health if they mentioned cravings, offered concurrent trauma-informed care with medicated assisted treatment for 16-20 sessions, trauma-informed care used Polyvagal Theory techniques …

Development Of An Ehealth Harm Reduction Resource To Address Opioid Use Among Youth In Rural Northern California, Carolyn Perrotti Lake May 2021

Development Of An Ehealth Harm Reduction Resource To Address Opioid Use Among Youth In Rural Northern California, Carolyn Perrotti Lake

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: Opioid use and misuse is a leading cause of injury and death among adolescents and young adults in the United States, with a three-fold increase in opioid overdoses since 2000 (Carney et al., 2018; Hudgins et al., 2019). Opioid misuse correlates with misuse of other substances, which exponentially increases health risks over time. The most effective treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) among adolescence is through effective prevention interventions that either prevent the development of the OUD or enable timely diagnosis and treatment in order to prevent poor health outcomes.

Context: The use of eHealth technology, which has …

Implementation And Evaluation Of Whole Health Opioid Safety Shared Medical Appointments In A Veteran Population: A Quality Improvement Study, Sherry Cox

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2018b) suggest that 130 Americans die from an opioid overdose each day, thus creating an unprecedented number of opioid-related deaths in the United States to date.

Context: Of particular interest to the author and this DNP project is that Veterans are twice as likely to die from an opioid overdose, compared to the average American, making this epidemic a priority for Veterans Health Administration (Wilkie, 2018).

Interventions: The author developed a 9-session Opioid Safety Shared Medical Appointment (SMA) program to reduce opioid reliance in …

Identification Of Victims Of Human Trafficking: Leading Change Through A Global Pandemic, Connie Clemmons-Brown Dec 2020

Identification Of Victims Of Human Trafficking: Leading Change Through A Global Pandemic, Connie Clemmons-Brown

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Human trafficking is a multi-billion-dollar global industry, generating $150 billion annually (International Labour Organization [ILO], 2014), and driven by the exploitation of victims of all ages, primarily for forced labor or commercial sex. Victims endure frequent and prolonged abuse, suffering illnesses, and injuries. When accessing the health care system, they often go unrecognized by health care providers and nurses. Recognition requires training to raise awareness and the right tools to capture the information necessary to identify victims and address opportunities to improve their safety, care, and support. The aim of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) evidence-based change project was …
