Prospective Evaluation Of Outcome Of Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Using The ‘Stone’ Nephrolithometry Score: A Single-Centre Experience, Muhammad Farhan, Syed M. Nazim, Basit Salam, Hammad Ather

Department of Surgery

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To assess the prediction of stone clearance and complications of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) using the 'STONE' nephrolithometry score, assessing stone size, tract length (skin-to-stone distance), degree of obstruction, number of calyces involved and stone essence (density).

PATIENTS AND METHODS:

This was a prospective study of patients undergoing single-tract PCNL while prone, conducted at a university hospital. All patients had non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography within 3 weeks of the procedure. Only patients with a unilateral procedure and radio-opaque stones were included. The five variables of the STONE nephrolithometry score were calculated before the procedure. The stone-free rates were assessed with …

Is There Any Benefit Of Drain Placement On Postoperative Complications In Patients Undergoing The Sistrunk Procedure?, Talha Ahmed Qureshi, Anwar Suhail, Syed Sajjad Ali Zaidi, Wasif Siddiqui

Department of Surgery

Abstract

Introduction Same-day, outpatient Sistrunk procedure is commonly performed to manage thyroglossal duct cyst anomalies and may lead to postoperative complications. Surgical drains are placed to prevent complications, but recent observations show no advantage and rather increased health care costs and patient discomfort. Objective The study evaluated if drain placement in the Sistrunk procedure offers any benefit on postoperative complications. Methods A retrospective analysis of patient records having undergone same-day, outpatient Sistrunk procedure from 2004 to 2014 was done. Of 58 (38 male and 20 female) patients included, 38 did not have drains placed and the remaining 20 had drains …

Near Complete Aortic Transection And Its Successful Repair Using A Novel Cardiopulmonary Bypass Technique, Dania Aijaz Shah, Adil Aijaz Shah, Syed Jawad Shah, Muhammad Naseer Khan, Saulat H. Fatimi

Department of Surgery

Abstract

The case of a 38-year old female, victim of a road traffic accident who presented with a near complete aortic transection is presented. An emergent repair employing cardiopulmonary bypass was attempted in the operating room. Anticipating a high-risk of compromise to cerebral perfusion from air micro-emboli, the bypass was attempted with an innovative approach involving the successful cannulation of the pulmonary artery and descending aorta. The patient survived and was found to be doing well on subsequent post-operative visits.

Cocoon Abdomen - A Rare Cause Of Intestinal Obstruction., Zia Ur Rehman

Department of Surgery

Abstract

INTRODUCTION:

Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis or abdominal cocoon is a rare condition of unknown etiology in which intestinal obstruction result from encasement of variable length of bowel by dense fibro collagenous membrane.

PRESENTATION OF CASE:

A case of young male is reported who presented with features of small bowel obstruction with tender mass in the right iliac fossa. CT scan suggested features of internal herniation. On exploration, he was found to have small intestine, large intestine, stomach and liver covered with a thick cocoon like membrane. The membrane was gently peeled off the small intestine. The patient recovered well and …
