Empowering Caregivers In The Prevention Of Clinical Delirium For At Risk Older Adults Boarding In The Emergency Department Setting, Danielle Brewer Jan 2024

Empowering Caregivers In The Prevention Of Clinical Delirium For At Risk Older Adults Boarding In The Emergency Department Setting, Danielle Brewer

DNP Projects

Background: Emergency Department (ED) overcrowding is a global healthcare crisis documented in the literature for more than a decade, impacting patient outcomes and resource availability. While awaiting delayed transfer to an inpatient room, older adults in the ED remain vulnerable to developing acute delirium. Boarding potentiates the risk for worsening health outcomes, which are further compounded by delirium. Scarcity of resources and time constraints delay delirium detection and increase risk for down-stream hospital-acquired complications, higher cost, and prolonged length of stay. Current ED models do not prioritize caregiver partnership or involvement in delirium-conscious care, which is a holistic approach to …

Staff Perceptions Of Workplace Violence In The Emergency Department; Increasing Safety Awareness And Education, Marissa Hibbs

DNP Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to evaluate nursing staff perceptions of safety and workplace violence and increase safety awareness and knowledge in the emergency department of a level 1 trauma center.

Methods: This study was a single site project that used a descriptive non-experimental survey design to evaluate staff perceptions on workplace violence and safety before and after educational intervention. Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Emergency Department Through-Put Based On Provider Type In A Critical Access Hospital, Deanna Faye Dingus Hamilton Jan 2021

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Emergency Department Through-Put Based On Provider Type In A Critical Access Hospital, Deanna Faye Dingus Hamilton

DNP Projects

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate effectiveness and timeliness of through-put in the emergency department based on provider type in a rural critical access hospital in eastern Kentucky.

Design: A retrospective, observational review was conducted at a small critical access hospital. Descriptive statistics including Mann Whitney and Chi square were performed to evaluate significance.

Methods: Pre-intervention 552 charts were abstracted and 1656 post-intervention charts were abstracted. Arrival time to triage, triage to provider and provider to disposition times in minutes were collected. A prospective survey regarding comfort level with performing advanced practice skills was given to the advanced providers who were working …

A Modified Screening Tool To Evaluate Risk Of Unanticipated Return Visits To The Emergency Department In The Geriatric Population, Tabitha Riley Jan 2020

A Modified Screening Tool To Evaluate Risk Of Unanticipated Return Visits To The Emergency Department In The Geriatric Population, Tabitha Riley

DNP Projects

Purpose: To compare the Modified Screening Tool for Identifying at Risk Seniors (mSTIRS) against the Triage Risk Screening Tool (TRST) and the Identification of Seniors at Risk (ISAR) for predictive value and assess the relationship between presenting complaint with unanticipated return visit (URV) occurrence in geriatric patients.

Design: A prospective, observational study conducted at a large academic medical center. Descriptive statistics and psychometric analyses were used to analyze the association between demographics, clinical data, and to evaluate the modified screening tool.

Methods: 38 geriatric participants in the Emergency Department (ED) were enrolled and 21 completed the study. The screening tools …

Follow up adherence is imperative to ensure treatment goals are met. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing (DNP) project was to examine factors associated with adherence to outpatient mental health (MH) treatment following an emergency department (ED) visit among adolescents admitted to an ED of a large hospital in a multi-system healthcare organization located in a metropolitan area of the southeastern United States (U.S.). This DNP project aims were …

Evaluation Of A Peer Mentor Program On Adult Heroin Overdose Patients In The Emergency Department, Christina Schipper Jan 2018

Evaluation Of A Peer Mentor Program On Adult Heroin Overdose Patients In The Emergency Department, Christina Schipper

DNP Projects

Abstract

PURPOSE: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the rate of heroin use and heroin overdoses has greatly increased in the last decade, regardless of sex, age, race or income. The emergency department (ED) is a common place heroin users present, often as an overdose or due to a complication from their drug use. To address the current opioid epidemic, the CDC calls for increased access to substance abuse treatment services. Peer Mentors placed in the ED serve as a link for the patient to recovery services. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the …

An Evaluation To The Adherence Of A Sepsis Protocol At A Central Kentucky Community Hospital, Somer K. Robinson Jan 2015

An Evaluation To The Adherence Of A Sepsis Protocol At A Central Kentucky Community Hospital, Somer K. Robinson

DNP Projects

Background: Sepsis is defined as a “systemic response to an active infectious process in the host” and “represents the systemic inflammatory response to the presence of infection” (American College of Chest Physicians/Society of Critical Care Medicine Consensus Conference, 1992, p.865). In 2008, an estimated 727,000 patients were hospitalized with a diagnosis of sepsis, an increase from 326,000 in 2000, or a 55% increase in prevalence over the eight-year period (Hall, Williams, DeFrances, & Golosinskiy, 2011). Early identification of sepsis with early and effective management strategies has been shown to improve patient outcomes and decrease mortality and prevent organ dysfunction (Levy …
