Metaphysics Of Mania: Edgar Allan Poe's And Herman Melville's Rebranding Of Madness During The American Asylum Movement, Alexis Renfro
Metaphysics Of Mania: Edgar Allan Poe's And Herman Melville's Rebranding Of Madness During The American Asylum Movement, Alexis Renfro
All Master's Theses
The “madman’s” place throughout history has tended to be a mystery on both ontological and epistemological levels. From the perception of the madman as a crazed oracle in the sixteenth century to the perception of the madman as a criminal in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the nineteenth-century madman was even more difficult to define. Because insanity was deemed the inverse of bourgeois normativity and conservative moral standards, those categorized as mad in America during mid-1800s were institutionalized in reformed mental asylums, establishments which sought to homogenize human behavior through moral treatment. Both Edgar Allan Poe and Herman Melville drew …
Effect Of A Sliding Scale Vitamin D Supplementation Protocol On 25(Oh)D Status In Elite Athletes With Spinal Cord Injury, Lauren Stark, Kelly Pritchett, Robert Pritchett, Elizabeth Broad
Effect Of A Sliding Scale Vitamin D Supplementation Protocol On 25(Oh)D Status In Elite Athletes With Spinal Cord Injury, Lauren Stark, Kelly Pritchett, Robert Pritchett, Elizabeth Broad
All Master's Theses
Recent studies suggest that a substantial proportion of elite athletes with SCI (spinal cord injury) have insufficient 25(OH)D status which may be associated with decreased muscle strength. This study: 1) examined the effects of a 16-week sliding scale Vitamin D supplementation protocol on 25(OH)D concentration and 2) determined whether subsequent 25(OH)D status impacts muscle performance in elite athletes with SCI. Thirty-four members of the US Olympic Committee Paralympic program, and the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association from outdoor sports participated. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations, lifestyle and dietary factors were assessed during the Winter and Spring. Participants were assigned a 16-week sliding scale …
Just World Beliefs, Identity Development, And Social Justice Advocacy Of Counselor Trainees, Sara Rundlett
Just World Beliefs, Identity Development, And Social Justice Advocacy Of Counselor Trainees, Sara Rundlett
All Master's Theses
This was the first study exploring the relationship between the belief in a just world, identity development, and social justice advocacy (SJA). A mixed methods design was conducted using a nationwide sample of ninety-seven counselor-in-training participants. Hypotheses included positive correlation between identity development and SJA, negative correlation between belief in a just world and SJA, and negative correlation between belief in a just world and identity development. Results were not significant but provided implications for future research and counselor training programs.
Scheduling Recess Before Lunch: Perceptions Of Washington State Public Elementary School Professionals, Kaitlin O'Leary, Nicole Stendell-Hollis Ph.D., Rdn, Tishra Beeson Drph, Mph, Dana Ogan Ms, Rdn
Scheduling Recess Before Lunch: Perceptions Of Washington State Public Elementary School Professionals, Kaitlin O'Leary, Nicole Stendell-Hollis Ph.D., Rdn, Tishra Beeson Drph, Mph, Dana Ogan Ms, Rdn
All Master's Theses
Recess Before Lunch (RBL) is a wellness strategy with a purpose of improving the overall health and behavior of school-aged children. While some studies have reported a variety of benefits and challenges by simply scheduling recess prior to the specified lunchtime, few have examined adequate strategies for successful implementation. This mixed-methods study asked elementary school principals and school food service directors within each K-5th grade public school throughout the state of Washington to participate in an online survey assessing their school’s experience using RBL. Schools were placed into three groups based on participants’ stage of RBL adoption: (1) currently using …
Comparison Of Anthropometric Measurements Of Abdominal Obesity As Predictors Of Cardiometabolic Risk Factors: Nhanes 2011-2014, Carli Kettel
Comparison Of Anthropometric Measurements Of Abdominal Obesity As Predictors Of Cardiometabolic Risk Factors: Nhanes 2011-2014, Carli Kettel
All Master's Theses
Background It has been well established that screening tools for cardiometabolic diseases are less useful among obese populations as risk of these diseases is already high. However, research is lacking in regard to efficient screening tools for cardiometabolic diseases among normal weight and overweight populations. Objective This study compared the predictive strengths of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), and SAD-to-height ratio (SADHtR) with respect to risk of cardiometabolic disorders in normal and overweight U.S. populations. Design This cross-sectional study utilized data from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants/setting …
A Diversity-Oriented Synthesis Approach To Functionalized Azaheterocycles Using Cyclic Alpha-Halo Eneformamides, Spencer A. Langevin
A Diversity-Oriented Synthesis Approach To Functionalized Azaheterocycles Using Cyclic Alpha-Halo Eneformamides, Spencer A. Langevin
All Master's Theses
Functionalized piperidines, azepanes, azamacrocycles, morpholines, and thiomorpholines are common structural motifs found in a wide range of pharmaceuticals such as carmegliptine, levofloxacin, thioridazine, claviciptic acid, and azithomycin. As a result, there is a strong desire to construct highly functionalized nitrogen-bearing ring scaffolds in order to construct a wide range of drug possibilities. There are several non-modular and step-uneconomical synthetic methods used in the construction of these aforementioned motifs such as ring closing metathesis, ring expansions, and intramolecular reductive amination. In this research, we present a step-economical, cost-effective, scalable, and diversity-oriented synthesis approach to highly functionalized N-heterocycles through the intermediacy of …
The Associations Of Farm-To-School Programs On Childhood Obesity In School Breakfast, Hannah Brzozowski
The Associations Of Farm-To-School Programs On Childhood Obesity In School Breakfast, Hannah Brzozowski
All Master's Theses
Farm to School (F2S) programs claim to increase fruit/vegetable consumption and promote healthy, lifelong food/beverage choices. Both of which are identified strategies in the prevention of childhood obesity. Long-term effects of F2S programs are largely unexplored. This cross-sectional study matched ten schools, five with F2S, and five with a traditional National School Breakfast Program (NSBP). Third- and fourth-grade students (n=1031) were recruited for study participation to assess the effects of regular breakfast consumption and participation in F2S programs on body mass index (BMI). Demographic data, anthropometric data, and frequency of breakfast participation were collected. Additionally, BMI and frequency of breakfast …
Chemoselective And Stereoselective Exploration Of The Chemical Reactivity Space Of Castagnoli-Cushman-Derived Allylic Lactamoyl Esters: Application To The Synthesis Of Aza-Polycyclic Architectures, Brandon Joseph Mansker
All Master's Theses
The synthesis and evaluation of structure-activity relationships of saturated nitrogen heterocycles is the focal point of various pharmaceutical companies thanks to the high biological activity of previously isolated azacycles. Here, we describe an operationally simple and highly efficient approach to macrocyclic lactams bearing vicinal stereocenters and a challenging cycloalkyne motif. The outcomes are achieved through a novel [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between an N-iodoarylated-1,3-azadiene and cyclic anhydrides, followed by interception of the cycloadducts in cross-coupling manifolds (e.g., Sonogashira coupling) and concomitant lithiation-cyclization of the tethered alkyne. An unprecedented example of a hydroamino alkylation that is transition …
Effects Of Screen Light Filtering Software On Sleep And Morning Alertness, Hengyu Chi
Effects Of Screen Light Filtering Software On Sleep And Morning Alertness, Hengyu Chi
All Master's Theses
Research has shown that blue light can impact the circadian rhythm. Research has also suggested that use of electronic devices, such as computers and televisions that emit blue light before sleep, can negatively impact sleep quality. This research has led to the creation of computer software which lowers the levels of blue light in the evening to help with sleep. This study looked at the impact of wavelength filtering software on sleep onset, sleep duration and subjective alertness after morning waking of four college students. The college students were randomized into two groups and had the wavelength filtering software f.lux …
The Effect Of Parenting Styles On Academic Self-Efficacy, Resilience, And Help Seeking, Ana Gonzalez
The Effect Of Parenting Styles On Academic Self-Efficacy, Resilience, And Help Seeking, Ana Gonzalez
All Master's Theses
Parenting is a balance of behaviors that can influence a child’s outcome. Twenty-eight undergraduate college students completed ratings of parenting styles, resilience, and help-seeking behaviors, as well as academic self-efficacy. None of these variables were significant predictors of academic self-efficacy, although significant positive correlations were found between an authoritative parenting style and the variables of help-seeking and resilience. Help-seeking and academic self-efficacy were negatively correlated, suggesting that students with lower academic self-efficacy reported a higher willingness to seek help. Implications of these findings for both mental health counselors and university student support staff are discussed.
