Exploring The Structural And Functional Effects Of Pediatric Hydrocephalus On The Hippocampus, Lili Meng Aug 2022

Exploring The Structural And Functional Effects Of Pediatric Hydrocephalus On The Hippocampus, Lili Meng

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Hydrocephalus is one of the most common pediatric neurological problems that requires brain surgery in children. Pediatric hydrocephalus is characterized as an abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) buildup in the brain’s ventricles due to ineffective CSF reabsorption. When this fluid builds up in these cavities, it increases intracranial pressure and has a direct mass effect on the surrounding brain tissue and structures. Ultimately, various functions are affected including—but not limited to—vision, learning, memory, motor control, and hearing. Despite current literature suggesting that hydrocephalus may be associated with reduced hippocampal volume among rats and human adults, findings remain limited in the human …

Menstrual And Fertility Tracking Apps And The Post Roe V. Wade Era, Samantha T. Campanella

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

In the first section of the paper, I will place current conversations about data privacy within the broader context of restrictions that have been placed on reproductive rights by examining historical trajectories. Emphasis will be placed on the historical trajectory of how past policies and ideologies have worked against Roe v. Wade, and how this trajectory contributes to a decrease in access to abortions. In addition, recent news stories have documented the overturning of Roe v. Wade in several jurisdictions within the United States, which confirms the criminalization of abortion. In light of this, experts have raised awareness about the …

Acoustic Reflex Activation And Its Effect On Middle Ear Function, Austen Schmoll Aug 2022

Acoustic Reflex Activation And Its Effect On Middle Ear Function, Austen Schmoll

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Previous studies have suggested larger magnitudes and lower thresholds in ipsilateral acoustic reflexes when compared to contralateral acoustic reflexes. This pilot study explored these effects by measuring how sound is transmitted through the middle ear. Middle ear absorbance was measured in the ipsilateral and contralateral conditions with and without activation of the acoustic reflex in normal hearing adults. Data showed that ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds (ART) were approximately 5 dB lower than contralateral ARTs. The magnitude of the acoustic reflex was shown to be larger in the ipsilateral condition. Results suggest that there is an evident contrast between ipsilateral and …

The search revealed 22 studies which reported on 25 unique samples. The most common capacity building intervention component implemented was training/professional development. The results of this study revealed that capacity building interventions are …

The Effects Of The Aromatase Inhibitor, Letrozole, On Lithium Chloride (Licl)-Induced Conditioned Disgust Behaviour (Anticipatory Nausea) In Male Rats, Vangel Matic Aug 2022

The Effects Of The Aromatase Inhibitor, Letrozole, On Lithium Chloride (Licl)-Induced Conditioned Disgust Behaviour (Anticipatory Nausea) In Male Rats, Vangel Matic

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Anticipatory Nausea (AN) is a form of classical conditioning in which the effects of a nausea-inducing toxin become associated with a specific environmental context. AN is often experienced by individuals receiving chemotherapy treatment, whereby the emetic effects of the chemotherapy agents become associated with the treatment context (i.e. hospital, clinic), such that exposure to the context alone can cause an individual to experience nausea and potentially withdraw from treatment. Chemotherapy-associated AN is suggested to have a higher incidence in females compared to males.

AN can be represented in a rodent model (conditioned disgust) through the occurrence of conditioned gaping behaviour …

The Impact Of International Experiential Learning On Career Trajectories: A Scoping Literature Review, Nishta Mehta

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Preparing graduates for their future beyond the classroom is of importance in today’s society, where the employment landscape is ever-changing and expanding globally. However, recent research suggests that knowledge acquisition is insufficient, and it must go part and parcel with the development of lifelong skills in problem-solving, critical reflection, and adaptability to support successful career trajectories. Experiential learning (EL) is understood as enticing students to think critically about learning through the application of knowledge using transferable skills in contexts beyond the university. This is especially true for international learning experiences. Nevertheless, despite over a decade of EL, neither professors nor …

Does Aerobic Intensity Level In Standard Physical Therapy Relate To Change In Walking Endurance In Patients With Stroke?, Yunyi Yan

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Aerobic exercise is critical in improving muscle strength, balance, and gait in stroke rehabilitation; higher dosage of exercise, in the form of increased physiotherapy(PT) duration, step counts, is associated with greater motor recovery. We sought to explore whether aerobic intensity level in one PT session is associated with the change in walking endurance; we hypothesized that higher levels of aerobic intensity, younger age, and being male would relate to greater improvement in walking endurance for individuals with stroke.

In this study, sixty-four individuals with stroke, aiming at improving walking performance, were recruited. Walking endurance was assessed by the Six-Minute Walk …

The Validity Of A Smartphone App (Myrecovery©) To Serve As Proxy For Activity Level In Athletes, Nicole K. Bryant, Alan Getgood, Trevor Birmingham, Ryan Degen, Kevin Willits, Robert Litchfield, J. Robert Giffin

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Background: When investigating the effectiveness of interventions to prevent recurrence of sports injuries, measuring exposure time (the time an athlete is at risk of injury) is crucial. The most accurate method of measuring exposure time involves hiring personnel to stand field side during practices and games to record minutes at risk. However, this does not capture other activities in which the athlete may take part that are not part of their formal sport that may put them at risk of re-injury. Another means to collect this data is to ask the athlete to self-report exposure. However, self-report diaries are often …

Motor Learning By Observing The Movements Of A Computer-Animated, Human-Like Actor And A Non-Limb Observational Video, Mudia Iyayi Aug 2022

Motor Learning By Observing The Movements Of A Computer-Animated, Human-Like Actor And A Non-Limb Observational Video, Mudia Iyayi

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Our project is looking at the phenomenon of observational motor learning using a two-joint robotic manipulandum (robotic arm). When someone learns a new motor skill (i.e. throwing a football to a wide receiver) the brain must make and map an internal model of the forces required for that movement. The plasticity of the brain in constructing these representations is termed “motor learning” and can occur through physical practice or—for the purposes of our investigation—observation. Previous studies have used videos of human actors learning new skills to drive motor learning in the observer, however, it is not known what components of …

The Effect Of Type 1 Diabetes On The Metabolic Response To Exercise, Theres Tijo Aug 2022

The Effect Of Type 1 Diabetes On The Metabolic Response To Exercise, Theres Tijo

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disorder that results in insufficient endogenous insulin production. Regular exercise has numerous health benefits for individuals with T1DM, however, most insulin-dependent diabetics avoid physical activity due to the fear of exercise-induced hypoglycemia (low blood glucose/BG).

The risk of hypoglycemia in this population may be partly due to lower liver glycogen stores which is a major source of blood glucose during exercise. However, the mechanism that leads to lower glycogen stores in T1DM is unknown.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an acute bout of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise …

The Effects Of Estrogen In The Glucoregulatory Response To Exercise In Type 1 Diabetes, Mitchell James Sammut Aug 2021

The Effects Of Estrogen In The Glucoregulatory Response To Exercise In Type 1 Diabetes, Mitchell James Sammut

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Regular exercise has shown to benefit the health of individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). However, a barrier to regular exercise for this population is the fear of low blood glucose (BG) levels, also known as hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia can result in short and long-term side-effects, such as recurring loss of consciousness or in severe cases death.

In non-diabetics, sex-related differences in fuel selection during exercise are well established. Women shift towards using fats as fuel whereas men rely mostly on sugars (i.e., carbohydrates) for energy production. Exercise during the luteal phase of the female menstrual cycle, where estrogen levels …

Using Social Media As A Recruitment Tool In Qualitative Research, Erica Lo

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Social media is an overlooked tool in qualitative health research due to limited methodological guidance in literature. While internet methods have been proven useful throughout many disciplines, using social media in research without literature support can lead to unforeseen practical and ethical problems. But, as researchers develop guidelines and publish their findings on the effectiveness of social media, these barriers can be overcome. This poster summarizes the process of using social media as a recruitment tool and the applications of this procedure through the results of Project Echo.

Development Of A Low Field Mri-Based Approach For Observation Of Water Penetration Into Clay: Preliminary Results, Shivam Gupta

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are considered one of the most efficient and non-invasive methods of observing water content in permeable substances. MRI can visualize and quantify the movement of water in real time. In this study, MRI was used to observe the water penetration through clay. Furthermore, MRI can acquire three-dimensional data due to its radio-frequency signals from any orientation. The contrast of the images produced by MRI is a display of the fluid concentration. As such, any change in the contrast intensity is interpreted as a regional change in the concentration of fluid. This report summarizes the preliminary results …

Older adults often face challenges in meaningful occupations in their neighbourhoods, often tied to place-based barriers and changes including neighbourhood decline or gentrification. The objectives of this study are to draw on findings from an ethnographic study exploring older adults’ lives in their neighbourhoods, in order to contextually situate the diverse experiences of older adults as they engage in community occupations, focusing on social participation and leisure. We employed an ethnographic methodology with 38 older adults living in two neighbourhoods in a mid-sized Canadian city. Participants engaged in narrative interviews, photo elicitation interviews, go-along interviews, and activity-space mapping with follow-up …

Simulating 129-Xe Hyperpolarization, Jacob F. Abiad Aug 2021

Simulating 129-Xe Hyperpolarization, Jacob F. Abiad

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Hyperpolarized 129-Xe is an important resource in many fields of medical physics and MRI research. The physics of the efficient production of hyperpolarized 129-Xe is therefore equally worth investigation. The main process of hyperpolarizing 129-Xe is Spin Exchange Optical Pumping (SEOP) and is dependent on several physical factors that can be difficult to constantly change in a lab setting. Physical modelling of 129-Xe hyperpolarization allows for the more efficient testing of hyperpolarization physics in a wide array of experimental setups to better determine the optimal values for hyperpolarization. This research project attempted to create a working model for 129-Xe hyperpolarization …

Exploring The Environmental Factors That Shape The Experiences Of Risk For Older Adults, Bernice Chung Aug 2021

Exploring The Environmental Factors That Shape The Experiences Of Risk For Older Adults, Bernice Chung

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

When a young adult wants to go mountain climbing, rarely do people think it is “too dangerous”. The same cannot be said for older adults. Although life frequently involves risk-taking, older adults are too often positioned as ‘at risk’ and therefore, in need of protection. The problem lies in the way risk is conceptualized as an individually located phenomenon. This narrow view negates the environmental factors that exist outside the control of older adults and that shape risk in older adulthood. I wanted to address this gap, so my research explored the environmental factors that shape experiences of risk for …

Falls In Mid-Life: A Scoping Literature Review, Nicole Struthers Aug 2021

Falls In Mid-Life: A Scoping Literature Review, Nicole Struthers

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

As the global aging population continues to grow, falls and fall-related injuries (FRIs) exert growing pressure on healthcare systems. Falls have been well studied regarding children (0-19 years) and older adults (65+ years). However, falls in mid-life (40-64 years) have not been studied as extensively. This scoping literature review on mid-life falls was conducted with the goal of answering two questions: what is known from the literature about the characteristics of falls occurring in mid-life, and how do falls in mid-life relate to experiences of falling over the lifespan, particularly falls later in life. A six-stage framework for conducting a …
