Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a degenerative joint disease, leading to articular cartilage breakdown, osteophyte formation, and synovitis, caused by an initial joint trauma. Pro-inflammatory cytokines increase catabolic activity and may perpetuate inflammation following joint trauma. Interleukin-15 (IL-15), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, is increased in OA patients, although its roles in PTOA pathophysiology are not well characterized. Here, we utilized Il15 deficient rats to examine the role of IL-15 in PTOA pathogenesis in an injury-induced model. OA was surgically induced in Il15 deficient Holtzman Sprague-Dawley rats and control wild-type rats to compare PTOA progression. Semi-quantitative scoring of the articular cartilage, subchondral bone, …

Background: The aim of this study is to assess the viability of a decision tree version of an often used questionnaire to measure wrist pain and disability, the Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation. Methods: Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation scores were collected from a cohort of 10394 patients who are part of a routine outcome measurement system. A decision tree version of the Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) was created. The intraclass correlation was used to evaluate the inter-version reliability between the original PRWE and the decision …

© 2020 by the authors. Assuming a symmetric pattern plays a fundamental role in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of facial asymmetry, for reconstructive craniofacial surgery, knowing the precise location of the facial midline is important since for most reconstructive procedures the intact side of the face serves as a template for the malformed side. However, the location of the midline is still a subjective procedure, despite its importance. This study aimed to automatically locate the bilateral symmetry midline of the facial skeleton based on an invariant moment technique using pseudo-Zernike moments. A total of 367 skull images were evaluated …

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd Hydrogels are of significant interest for cell encapsulation and delivery in regenerative medicine. Poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) are a class of biodegradable polymers that exhibit promise for biomedical applications due to the degradability of the ester and amide linkages in their backbones, their preparation from biomolecules such as amino acids, and the ability to readily tune their properties through a modular synthesis approach. Water-soluble PEAs containing cationic arginine moieties have previously been developed, but to the best of our knowledge, neutral water-soluble PEAs based on non-charged amino acids have not been reported. Using a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based …

Modified versions were proposed as solutions to measurement deficits in the NDI. However, the original 10-item NDI was scored out of 50 and is still the most frequently administered version. Examining the extent of agreement between traditional and Rasch-based versions using Bland-Altman (B&A) plots will inform our understanding of score differences that might rise from using different versions. Therefore, the objective of current study was to describe the extent of agreement between different …

Purpose of this study was to assess postoperative laxity of MCL reconstructions utilizing a modified LaPrade superficial MCL reconstruction. We retrospectively reviewed post-operative valgus stress radiographs in 23 multiligament injured patients who underwent concurrent sMCL and cruciate ligament reconstruction by a single surgeon. Post- operatively, 23 patients underwent valgus stress radiographs that were assessed at a mean of 8.7 months (range: 4-13 months), and mean SSD was 0.64mm ± 0.42mm. Eight patients underwent both pre- and post-operative valgus stress radiographs. Post-operative (0.09mm ± 0.63mm) SSD was found to be significantly reduced compared to pre-operative (2.07mm ± 0.44mm) SSD (mean diff. …

The mechanisms governing these firing behaviours are unclear. This study investigated the hypothesis that the arterial baroreflex exerts varying control over the different AP subpopulations. During baseline, medium APs expressed the greatest baroreflex slopes, while small and large APs exhibited weaker slopes. On going from baseline to lower body negative pressure (LBNP; simulated orthostatic stress), baroreflex slopes for some clusters of medium APs expressed the …
