Characteristics Of Patients With Low Hepatitis C Treatment Rates In Urban Medical Center Clinics, Rana Khamis, Crisshy Auguste, Paul H. Naylor Phd, Milton G. Mutchnik Md

Medical Student Research Symposium

The objective of this study was to determine whether there were different characteristics between HCV patients who were treated and those not treated after their first visit to a Gastroenterology (GI) or Infectious Disease (ID) clinic. This information might identify potential targets for remedial actions that could be performed to increase the number of treated patients.

Data was collected from 2019 HCV patient EMR charts including patient demographics, treatment history, and laboratory studies. We defined success as receiving treatment by July 2020 (6-18 months after the first visit).

We found that of 587 patients with HCV who were seen at …

Predicting Risk Of Atrial Fibrillation In Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant, Min Yi Wu, Madhulata Reddy, Shatha Farhan

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background

Atrial fibrillation (AF) in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients is associated with significant morbidity. We have previously reported that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), older age and presence of dilated left atrium (LA) are significant predictors of AF early post HSCT. In the current study, we sought to evaluate if TSH pre HSCT and serum electrolytes and eGFR at engraftment in patients undergoing HSCT are associated with increased risk of AF.

Methods

This is a single center retrospective study, involving 748 consecutive patients undergoing autologous and allogenic HSCT from 2012 to 2022. Patients’ charts were reviewed to acquire clinical …

Exploring Arab Americans’ Preferences Towards Telemedicine As A Mental Health Treatment, George G. Kidess, Liam Browning, Nicole Oska, Liza Hinchey, Arwa Saleem, Sadie Knill, Malaak Elhage, Arash Javanbakht

Medical Student Research Symposium

Introduction

Arab Americans—a large minority group in the United States—experience higher rates of mental illness and relatively lower rates of treatment compared to the general population. While some factors leading to this disparity have been proposed, data in the literature remains lacking. This study aims to explore Arab-American mental health perspectives with regards to their preferences towards telemental health as a treatment option.

Methods

Responses were collected through an anonymous bilingual Qualtrics survey from both Arab and non-Arab participants (n=294, ages 18+). Participants’ perceptions towards telemental health and mental illness stigma were assessed, performing comparisons between Arabs and non-Arabs, as …

Investigating Arab American Perspectives On Barriers To Mental Health Treatment, Arwa Saleem, Liam Browning, Nicole Oska, George Kidess, Liza Hinchey, Sadie Knill, Malaak Elhage, Arash Javanbakht

Medical Student Research Symposium

Purpose: Compared to the general population, Arab Americans experience higher rates of mental illness and lower rates of mental health treatment. While some causes of this discrepancy have been suggested, there are many gaps in the literature since Arab Americans are not recognized as an ethnic group in the United States. This study aims to analyze Arab-Americans’ outlook on mental health by identifying and addressing the barriers to receiving mental health treatment.

Methods: An anonymous bilingual Qualtrics survey was conducted and responses were collected from Arab and non-Arab participants (n=294, ages 18+). The participants’ viewpoints on barriers between Arabs and …

Characterizing Cold Water Drownings In The Great Lakes, Elizabeth T. Helfrich, Anthony Lagina

Medical Student Research Symposium

Since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, Great Lakes drownings have increased. The Great Lakes are a unique and understudied environment due to being cold, fresh water, and resuscitation protocols and guidelines being derived from warm, primarily salt water environments. We analyzed open sources materials to find records of Great Lakes drownings from 2021-2023 and analyze the data looking for trends in cold and warm water drownings.

We found 80.0-85.0% of the included drowning victims were male and had an average age of 38.0-39.0 years old. 40.0%-57.7% of Great Lakes drowning deaths were in cold water; of those, Lake Michigan had …

A Systematic Review Of The Social Determinants Of Health In Shoulder Arthroplasty Outcomes, Allison Boland, John Pum, Michael Gaudiani, Matthew A. Gasparro

Medical Student Research Symposium

This systematic review investigates the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on outcomes in shoulder arthroplasty (SA). SA, a common orthopedic procedure, has seen an increasing focus on SDOH influencing postoperative results. The study aims to comprehensively assess this impact on both surgical and patient-reported outcomes.

Through a systematic search of databases, 34 studies (2011-2021) met the inclusion criteria, involving 4,825,547 patients. Explored SDOH included insurance status, race/ethnicity, age, sex, income, social support, and veteran status. Outcomes considered were length of stay, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores, total SA rates, revision rates, complication rates, and discharge status.

Findings …

Assessing Boil Water Notices As Health-Risk Communication: Risk Perceptions, Efficacy, And Compliance During Winter Storm Uri, Ashleigh M. Day, Sydney O'Shay, Khairul Islam, Matthew W. Seeger, Shawn P. Mcelmurry

Open Data at Wayne State

Winter Storm Uri was an extreme disaster that impacted much of the United States during February of 2021. Texas and Oklahoma were generally not prepared for such an event and experienced massive power grid failures. This led to cascading risks including water system disruptions and many boil water notices (BWNs). The breakdown of some communication channels and the inability to enact protective actions due to power outages, as well as travel limitations on public roads, complicated both dissemination and implementation. Under these conditions, a non-representative, cross-sectional, survey was collected to assess individuals experience BWNs and how perceived efficacy impacts compliance. …

Real-world evidence for digitally-supported asthma programs among Medicaid-enrolled children remains limited. Using data from a collaborative quality improvement program, we evaluated the impact of a digital intervention on asthma inhaler use among children in southwest Detroit.

Methods
Children (6–13 years) enrolled with Kids Health Connection (KHC), a program involving home visits with an asthma educator, were invited to participate in a digital self-management asthma program (Propeller Health). Patients were provided with a sensor to capture short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) medication use, and given access to a paired mobile app to track usage. Patients’ healthcare providers and caregivers (“followers”) were invited …

Introducing A Trauma-Informed Care Model To Address Racial Disparities In Perinatal Outcomes Among African American Women, Mariah K. White May 2023

Introducing A Trauma-Informed Care Model To Address Racial Disparities In Perinatal Outcomes Among African American Women, Mariah K. White

Honors College Theses

Racial disparities in maternal and infant health have remained an issue within the United States despite efforts to advance and improve our health system. Most maternal deaths are preventable, especially with early and adequate maternal care. Infant mortality occurs for several reasons, but inadequate care usage increases the risk for adverse outcomes. Prenatal care usage within the United States has been inadequate for numerous years, most commonly among African American women, despite its known benefit. Low prenatal care usage among African American women can be attributed to community barriers, social injustices, trauma, discrimination, and health care mistrust. Trauma is common …
