Community water fluoridation has been shown to save money, both for families and the health care system. Fluoride benefits children and adults throughout their lives; leading to fewer and less severe cavities, fewer fillings and extractions, less pain and suffering from tooth decay. This project looks into the public sentiment in Greenfield, MA surrounding fluoride and works to promote fluoride varnish treatment at doctors visits for children ages 6 months to 5 years of age. Also included is an information sheet with an oral health questionnaire that would help guide patients and physicians towards better oral health.

Oral health is an important part of systemic health that is often overlooked by patients due to various barriers to dental care. Dental caries is a public health crisis and one of the most common chronic diseases globally. Poor oral health and the resulting inflammation caused by oral bacteria is associated with cardiovascular disease, pregnancy complications, poor glycemic control in diabetes mellitus, and many more conditions. Thus, the primary care physician may find herself presented with a variety dental pathology and may feel underprepared for this challenge.

Access to oral healthcare can be challenging for many patients and limited accessibility has been further amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Poor oral health is linked to several health complications and insurance coverage for dental care can be restrictive or nonexistent. Recent surveys show that many Vermonters of low-income status feel that their oral health is in poor condition. My project aimed to elucidate barriers to dental health care in the Lewiston-Auburn community. Obstacles highlighted included cost of care, lack of education and guidance in preventative oral health, and paucity of resources available to aid patients in identifying affordable programs. The data generated can be used in the future to better direct oral health interventions at CMMC Family Practice Clinic. Additionally, the survey responses were used to assemble educational material to distribute to patients.
