Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a pandemic of great concern among the nutrition-related non-communicable diseases. Its prevalence is mounting worldwide, particularly in underserved communities and minority groups. In 2019, 463 million people were diagnosed with T2DM, a number expected to increase to 578 million by 2030 globally. The prevalence of T2DM is increasing the mortality rate from cardiovascular complications. The social and health costs of treating this disease is currently 11% of the global health budget. Exercise benefits physical and mental health, prevents chronic disease, and improves overall quality of life. Most children and adolescents do not meet daily physical activity recommendations (Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative, 2019). The COVID-19 pandemic created large barriers for engagement in exercise and further decreased levels of activity in this population (Dunton et al., 2020; Moore et al., 2020; Sekulic et al., 2020). This project evaluates the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical activity in youth 8-17 years old. Abstract

Background: Forty percent of the US population ages 20-39 are categorized as obese,

their BMI is over 30, and 35% of college age students are obese or overweight. Issues related to obesity cost the US $147 billion annually. Between 40%-50% of college students are reported to be inactive. Inactivity can lead to increased morbidity and mortality related to increased risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, musculoskeletal issues, and depression. Providing dietary and physical activity education and access to nutritional information promotes behavior change in young adults.

Physical activity is an integral part of preventing and managing childhood and adolescent obesity. Lack of regular physical activity has negative impact on physical and psychosocial health. Arab Americans (AAs), one of the most rapidly growing minorities in United States, tend to have a high prevalence of obesity and low participation in physical activity. There were no significant relationships found between parental obesity risk knowledge and physical activity in their children. nor between parent's self efficacy and their children's physical activity. In addition there was no significant relationship between the adolescents' obesity risk knowledge and their physical activity. There was, however, a statistically significant relationship between adolescent's self efficacy and physical activity. The result of the correlation between parent's self-efficacy and their level of physical activity was not significant but approached significance (p = .07) and may be identified as a trend. The purpose of this correlational research is to understand the relationships among the variables of exercise self-efficacy, stages of exercise change, health promotion behaviors, body mass index (BMI), health problems, and the level of physical activity in postmenopausal Hispanic women. The significance of this study is to contribute research that enhances the understanding of the relationship of psychosocial and health promotion correlates and physical activity in postmenopausal Hispanic women.
