Education Strategies For The Interdisciplinary Team Of An Early Mobility Protocol, Malori Paplow
Education Strategies For The Interdisciplinary Team Of An Early Mobility Protocol, Malori Paplow
Nursing Capstones
Implementation of early mobility protocols in the intensive care unit has been well documented to prevent multiple complications associated with prolonged immobility and to improve patient outcomes. Expectations to implement evidence-based healthcare is growing and the most difficult steps in the process is education and implementation, and it is often left to busy nursing leaders who may be unprepared for the challenge. The literature provides little direction for nurses regarding when to use specific educational strategies when implementing an early mobility protocol, especially amongst the interdisciplinary team. The purpose of this paper is to create an evidence-based education plan for …

Teaching Methodologies For Improved Student Engagement In Online Or Distance Education Courses, Erin Williams
Nursing Capstones
Research demonstrates the importance of learner engagement and social presence achievement of student learning outcomes and increased student satisfaction. However, little guidance is available to educators on how to create effective online and distance education courses that are engaging, interactive, student-centered, and effective. A literature review was completed to determine which online and/or distance education teaching methodologies are best for improving student engagement, and therefore improving student outcomes. Thirteen articles published between January 2014 and December 2019 were identified from a search of two databases. Ten of these articles were further analyzed according to the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. …
Training And Support Of Unit Preceptors_A Literature Review Of Most Successful Tools, Corinne E. Jones
Training And Support Of Unit Preceptors_A Literature Review Of Most Successful Tools, Corinne E. Jones
Nursing Capstones
With nurses entering the workforce in the millions, preceptors are used to educate and train preceptees in clinical settings. A knowledge-practice gap exists when preceptors are put into their roles without any training regarding how to perform their preceptor duties. While preceptor education is desired among preceptors, there are no set standards for how preceptor training is delivered or what content is included. This paper reviews current literature and synthesizes results to form general guidelines regarding how best to deliver preceptor education and concept themes to be included in preceptor education. The databases CINAHL, PsycINFO, and ERIC were searched for …
Improving Patient Communication With Bedside Medical Interpreters: Nursing Education Focus On Providing Culturally Competent Care, Molly Murch
Nursing Capstones
Patient-centered care is achieved through effective communication between the patient and the healthcare team members. The purpose of this independent study project is to show that the increasing cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity in the United States healthcare system has resulted in an increased need for professionally trained medical interpreters, as well as the continued need to educate pre-licensure nursing students on the importance of providing culturally competent care. This paper will first focus on Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients in healthcare. Information discussed will include data on the number of LEP patients who require healthcare, laws protecting LEP patients, …
Preoperative Smoking Cessation Education Plan For Patients And Health Care Professionals, Amy Anderson
Preoperative Smoking Cessation Education Plan For Patients And Health Care Professionals, Amy Anderson
Nursing Capstones
Surgical site infections are an undesired consequence of surgery. Smoking has been identified as a risk factor for developing a postoperative infection (Anderson, 2019). Patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery should be required to be tobacco-free for at least four weeks before surgery. Health care organizations can implement a preoperative smoking cessation program within their facility to assist patients in achieving this requirement. To do so, an education plan is needed to effectively disseminate the main components of the program to both patients and health care professionals. The efficacy of the education plan can be exponentially increased by selecting learning strategies …

Barefoot Running: Effects On Emg Activity Of Gluteus Medius And Tensor Fascia Latae In Habitually Shod Runners, Bailey Neubauer, Zach Drevlow, Alexandra Gerlach
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Purpose/Hypothesis: Running has been a common practice in humans since the species’ dawn. Due to its relative ease and low cost, running continues to be one of the most popular forms of exercise today. Although running provides many benefits such as disease prevention, injury prevalence in running is high. The trend of minimalist shoes and barefoot training has gained popularity over the decade as a return to a more natural form of running. Some researchers hypothesize that barefoot running can reduce injury rate by changing the biomechanics of the runner. In this study we propose a different hypothesis: barefoot running …
Implementation Of A Smart Tool In The Electronic Health Record To Improve Interdisciplinary Discharge Communication And Hospital Readmission Rates, Katelin Umland
Nursing Capstones
In the department of Inpatient Psychiatry at a large mid-western academic medical center, interdisciplinary discharge communication between registered nurses, social workers, advanced practice providers, and physicians has presented as a problem. Patients are frequently discharged from the hospital without being seen by all necessary disciplines and concomitantly discharged without needed supplies, medications, resources, or follow-up appointments in place. This current discharge method negatively affects patient care, causes workflow disruption for all disciplines, and is known to be a contributing factor in increased hospital readmission rates. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to improve interdisciplinary communication …

The Use Of Mobile Applications To Promote Sleep In Clients With A Mental Health Diagnosis, Joanna Johnson
Nursing Capstones
Background: Disrupted sleep patterns are a common occurrence in those with a diagnosis of a mental health disorder. Unfortunately, many people are often treated for their mental health disorders solely, or prescribed additional medications to manage sleep, leaving sleep management poorly addressed in the clinical setting. There is a growing body of evidence supporting the benefits of integrating mobile applications into psychiatric clinical practice.
Objective: The purpose of this DNP project was to evaluate the benefit of utilizing mobile applications that promote relaxation prior to bedtime, in order to improve overall sleep patterns in patients with a diagnosis of a …

Emg Analysis Of Lassimus Dorsi, Middle Trapezius, And Erector Spinae Muscle Activity During Spinal Rotation: A Pilot Study, Katie Holzheimer, Ross Swartz, Keely Hutchens, Joshua Still
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Purpose/Hypothesis: Spinal rotation is a very common movement that occurs multiple times each day during normal daily activities or even during certain sport performances. Since this motion is a contributing factor to back injuries, it will be important for physical therapists to consider this concept with rehabilitation programs for current back injuries as well as prevention of future injuries. The LD has attachments to many areas of the body, including the spine, humerus, scapula, and pelvis, which explains why this muscle also contributes to multiple actions at the trunk and upper extremity. Due to the attachment sites and the …
Fertility Options For Women With Endometriosis: In Vitro Fertilization Versus Surgical Excision Or Ablation, Jenny L. Brown
Fertility Options For Women With Endometriosis: In Vitro Fertilization Versus Surgical Excision Or Ablation, Jenny L. Brown
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Endometriosis negatively affects the fertility of many women of reproductive age worldwide. Some women with endometriosis are able to conceive without reproductive assistance, while others require medical intervention. In vitro fertilization and surgical management are available and widely used in the treatment of endometriosis associated infertility. In vitro fertilization has been found to be effective in women with stages I-IV endometriosis, with varying degrees of success at each stage. These varying results may be due to oocyte quality and availability as well as endometriosis location. Surgical excision and/or surgical ablation of endometriosis/endometriomas may also improve chance of successful pregnancy but …
Managing Anxiety With Pharmacogenomic Testing, Ashley Pommer
Managing Anxiety With Pharmacogenomic Testing, Ashley Pommer
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Anxiety affects approximately three to seven percent of the United States population, and nearly 50% of the diagnosed patients fail to respond to first-line treatment regimens (Boland, Duffy, & Meyer 2018). Traditional first-line treatments include medication therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), or the combination of both. With such a high initial failure rate, recent studies indicate promising results in managing anxiety with pharmacogenomic testing. Pharmacogenomic testing is allowing providers to prescribe medication based on individual genetic makeup, focusing on how each patient metabolizes certain medications. The purpose of this literature review was to determine if first-line methods or pharmacogenomic testing …
Is A Varicocelectomy Beneficial In The Era Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies?, Chukwuka Oscar Nnoli
Is A Varicocelectomy Beneficial In The Era Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies?, Chukwuka Oscar Nnoli
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Clinical varicoceles are the most frequent physical finding associated with infertile men and impaired semen parameters. There is evidence that suggests varicocele repair improves semen parameter and increases the chances of natural pregnancy. Today, varicocele repair is often combined with assisted reproductive techniques (ART) such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), in Vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). In this literature review, data examining whether varicocelectomy before ART leads to improved pregnancy outcomes is reviewed. Current data suggest that there is a significant clinical benefit when correcting a varicocele in oligospermic men before IVF/ICSI. Similarly, men with non-obstructive azoospermia also …
The Impact Of Shift Work On Health And Wellbeing, Stephanie Gagelin
The Impact Of Shift Work On Health And Wellbeing, Stephanie Gagelin
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Many of today’s industries require workers to perform shift work (typically during 1600-0700). If workers are awake during this time period, circadian misalignment occurs. This scholarly project uses research studies and meta-analyses to provide information about increased health risks associated with circadian misalignment, focusing particularly on the categories of glucose metabolism, cardiovascular system, carcinogenesis, and mental health and acuity. Shift work has been found to increase BMI and waist circumference of employees, as well as increase blood glucose levels to “prediabetic” levels in previously euglycemic individuals. Shift work has been proven to increase high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), an acute phase …

Comparison Of Pharmacologic Treatments For Postmenopausal Osteoporosis, Kaitlyn Wirtz
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Osteoporosis is defined as a “generalized skeletal disorder characterized by compromised bone strength and deterioration of bone quality, often leading to fragility fracture” (DynaMed Plus, 2018). The prevalence of osteoporosis in the United States in adults aged greater than or equal to 50 years of age is “more than 10 million people overall and 33 million have low bone mineral density at the hip” (DynaMed Plus, 2018). Of these affected, one in two women will experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime (International Osteoporosis Foundation, 2017). To combat postmenopausal osteoporosis, two treatment options include bisphosphonates and the anti-receptor activator of …
