Increasing Education And Staff Knowledge Of Delirium Care: An Evidence-Based Quality Improvement Project, Serena Martinath Jan 2024

Increasing Education And Staff Knowledge Of Delirium Care: An Evidence-Based Quality Improvement Project, Serena Martinath

Master's Theses and Capstones

Introduction At a small, community hospital in Massachusetts a gap analysis was conducted leading to a quality improvement project to increase staff education and knowledge regarding delirium and evidence-based best practices for delirium care. Delirium is a growing, often under recognized medical condition that occurs in hospitalized patients (Loftus & Wiesenfeld, 2017). Delirium is characterized by acute changes in congnition, level of consciousness, and attention (Loftus & Wiesenfeld, 2017). A better understanding of this condition is expected to result in improved patient care.

Methods The clinical microsystem studied in this gap analysis project was assessed by using the AHRQ Gap …

Support Their Sleep: Enhancing Nurses' Knowledge And Implementation Of Non-Pharmacological Sleep Protocols To Improve Patient Rest, Recovery, And Reduce Cognitive Impairment., David C. Barry Jan 2023

Support Their Sleep: Enhancing Nurses' Knowledge And Implementation Of Non-Pharmacological Sleep Protocols To Improve Patient Rest, Recovery, And Reduce Cognitive Impairment., David C. Barry

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background: Sleep and rest play an influential role in promoting recovery and healing in humans. Hospitalized patients are at risk for altered sleep from hospitalization, illness, and stimulation from a hospital environment. Non-pharmacologic interventions preformed by nurses can help to improve sleep and sleep environment for patients.

Local problem: There was no protocol or available information regarding patient sleep promotion for nurses to references when caring for patients.

Methods: Nurses in the microsystem (n=8) were administered a pre/post questionnaire containing Likert scales and a short quiz containing knowledge-based questions. Questionnaires were distributed to nurses prior to and after …

Methods: Data was gathered from the New Hampshire Discharge Dataset on patients aged 18 to 85 who were admitted to any hospital with an infection diagnosis and concurrent substance use, from the years 2012 to 2019. This data was then graphed to analyze the trends.

Results: Infection rates had a consistent rise …

Implementation Of An Individualized Onboarding And Training For Nurse Managers, Marcelo Castro Jan 2021

Implementation Of An Individualized Onboarding And Training For Nurse Managers, Marcelo Castro

DNP Scholarly Projects

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The onboarding and training of nurse managers varies drastically in healthcare institutions across the US, even within the same organization. Though evidence-based studies have demonstrated that the onboarding and training process are related to employee engagement, retention, and to the achievement of positive departmental and institutional goals and outcomes, most healthcare organizations do not invest in providing an effective onboarding and training based on evidence models and frameworks. This project was conducted at a 345-bed tertiary teaching medical center in the Boston area to determine the need for instituting an effective evidence-based onboarding and training process for nurse …

Engaging Patients With Dementia In The Acute Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Staff, Andrea Lee Jan 2020

Engaging Patients With Dementia In The Acute Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Staff, Andrea Lee

DNP Scholarly Projects

Caring for dementia patients in the acute care setting can be challenging. Staff is trained to manage the acute illness and the symptoms of dementia can impact that care. Training for the care and management of the patient with dementia is not routinely provided for the acute care setting. According to the Alzheimer’s Association (2018), 5.7 million people are living with Alzheimer’s Dementia with the numbers projected to continue to rise. Training in the management of symptoms can alleviate stress and complications for not only the patient but staff members as well. The goal of this project is to educate …
