Microbiological Water Quality Of Impoundments: A Literature Review, G. Allen Burton Jr. Dec 1982

Microbiological Water Quality Of Impoundments: A Literature Review, G. Allen Burton Jr.

Public Health Resources

Assessing the microbiological water quality of impoundments and the potential for waterborne disease outbreaks is a difficult task when using traditional sampling programs. Problems associated with using fecal coliform bacteria as indicators of human pathogen presence complicates assessments of future water quality in preimpoundment areas. Reliable determination of future and present microbiological water quality requires knowledge of how the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of the watershed and impoundment interrelate to influence microbial indicator and pathogen densities. Accurate estimates of microbial indicator and pathogen densities, obtainable by using the enumeration methods and their modifications suggested in this report, will allow …

Effects Of Contextual Information On Behavior Of Calidris Sandpipers Following Alarm Calls, Daniel W. Leger, Jami L. Nelson Jan 1982

Effects Of Contextual Information On Behavior Of Calidris Sandpipers Following Alarm Calls, Daniel W. Leger, Jami L. Nelson

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Two classes of individuals-signalers and recipients -xist in all animal communication systems (Wilson 1975, Smith 1977). Signals make information available and recipients use this information when "choosing" a response (e.g., Leger and Owings 1978; Seyfarth et al. 1980a, b). Contextual information, which exists outside signals, is also usually available to recipients and may be appraised by them when selecting a response (Smith 1965, 1977). Consequently, to fully understand the responses of recipients we must identify contextual information in addition to signal-conveyed information.

Vertebrate "alarm" signals (signals emitted in the presence of potential predators) may be multi-functional and appear to vary …

Personal Computers And Behavioral Observation: An Introduction, John H. Flowers, Daniel W. Leger Jan 1982

Personal Computers And Behavioral Observation: An Introduction, John H. Flowers, Daniel W. Leger

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Some fundamental aspects of observational data are outlined, and some basic issues in implementation of small computers in observational research are discussed.

Some Simple Apple Ii Software For The Collection And Analysis Of Observational Data, John H. Flowers Jan 1982

Some Simple Apple Ii Software For The Collection And Analysis Of Observational Data, John H. Flowers

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Two general-purpose software packages for collecting and analyzing observational data from a variety of settings are discussed. One package is designed for coding mutually exclusive behavioral states using the Apple’s keyboard as an input device. The other is designed to monitor temporally overlapping behaviors, and it makes use of the Apple II’s built-in game-control button inputs to indicate up to three behavioral states that may occur simultaneously.

The Effect Of Flanking Context On Visual Classification: The Joint Contribution Of Interactions At Different Processing Levels, John H. Flowers, Noreen Wilcox Jan 1982

The Effect Of Flanking Context On Visual Classification: The Joint Contribution Of Interactions At Different Processing Levels, John H. Flowers, Noreen Wilcox

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Flanking characters that surround a target character may cause either facilitation of or interference with target classification, depending on experimental context. In three different experiments, the patterns of facilitative priming and interference were shown to change systematically as a function of onset asynchrony between flankers and target, illustrating differing time courses of the overlapping processes that each contributes to overall reaction time performance.

1982 Beef Cattle Report, Roy G. Arnold Jan 1982

1982 Beef Cattle Report, Roy G. Arnold

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A four-phase maximum forage system was evaluated in two trials over a two-year period. The fot:,r phases included: 1) cornstalk grazing (56 days), 2) stalklage feeding (121 days), 3) pasture grazing (112 days), and 4) finishing (96 days). In phase 1, weanling heifers gained about 1 lb per day grazing cornstalks, when supplemented with 2 lb of a 32 percent natural protein supplement. Adding monensin to the supplement resulted in an increase of. l lb in average daily gain (ADG). In phase 2, when heifers were fed stalklage twice weekly on winter pasture (trial 1), ADG and feed intake of …

Production Of Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1-Like Cytotoxin By Escherichia Coli, Alison D. O'Brien, Gerald D. Laveck, Michael R. Thompson, Samuel B. Formal Jan 1982

Production Of Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1-Like Cytotoxin By Escherichia Coli, Alison D. O'Brien, Gerald D. Laveck, Michael R. Thompson, Samuel B. Formal

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Strains of Escherichia coli previously implicated or proven to be causes of diarrhea were examined for production of a toxin similar to that of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 (Shiga). Organisms grown in an iron-depleted broth were lysed by pressure disruption followed by ultracentrifugation. Saline-dialyzed extracts were tested for cytotoxic effects on HeLa cells that were neutralizable with antiserum to Shiga toxin. Among the 13 E. coli strains so analyzed, 11 made a Shiga-like cytotoxin in levels ranging from trace (two avirulent isolates) to amounts equivalent to S. dysenteriae type 1 (two noninvasive strains that did not make E. coli heat-labile …

The Multi-Individual Cremation Phenomenon Of The Santa Cruz Drainage, Karl J. Reinhard, T Michael Fink Jan 1982

The Multi-Individual Cremation Phenomenon Of The Santa Cruz Drainage, Karl J. Reinhard, T Michael Fink

Karl Reinhard Publications

Multi-individual cremation deposits found in the upper Santa Cruz River drainage were previously interpreted as the result of hypothesized cultural contact in the area. A review of 50 cremation deposits for which detailed analyses are available indicates that mulii-individual cremation deposits are the result of incomplete gleaning practices and have doubtful cultural significance. Hypotheses are generated from the present data which account for the apparent variation in cremation practices within the study area.
