Effect Of Varying Levels Of Concentrate On Growth Performance And Feed Economics In Nili-Ravi Buffalo Heifer Calves, Zeeshan Muhammad Iqbal, Muhammad Abdullah, Khalid Javed, Makhdoom Abdul Jabbar, Nisar Ahmad, Yasir Allah Ditta, Hamid Mustafa, Faisal Shahzad

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

An experiment was conducted to optimize the effect of concentrate levels on growth performance in Nili-Ravi buffalo heifers. These animals (n = 30), aged 4-6 months, were divided into three treatment groups (A, B, C) and were offered concentrate at the rate of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% of body weight for an 8-month period, respectively. The statistical data showed a significant (P < 0.01) effect on dry matter intake among all treatment groups. However, dietary treatments showed a nonsignificant effect on body weight gain. Treatment A showed a better (P < 0.01) feed conversion ratio (10.01 - 0.55) compared to treatment B (11.75 - 0.79) and C (12.85 - 0.74). The average body condition score, body measurements, and blood profiles were not affected by varying levels of concentrate. However, total serum protein was found lower (P < 0.01) in treatment A compared with the other two treatment groups. The cost for production per kg gain was 80.8% higher in treatment C and 46.6% higher in treatment B compared to treatment A. It can be concluded that buffalo heifers can be reared cost-effectively on a minimum concentrate level (0.5% of body weight) along with ad libitum green fodder.

Ferritin, heavy polypeptide 1 (FTH1) is a kind of ferritin complex that catalyzes the conversion of Fe(II) into Fe(III) to protect the cell from oxidative damage. Recent research has shown that FTH1 is also associated with several disease-related processes, such as inflammation and tumor progression and so on. In this study, the coding sequence (CDS) of FTH1 in Jinding ducks was cloned. The CDS sequence revealed an open reading frame of 546 nucleotides encoding a protein with 181 amino acids. Based on this sequence, the duck FTH1 protein is predicted to have conserved domains typical of eukaryotic ferritin. Only one …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Aggressive osteoblastoma is a type of bone tumor rarely reported in veterinary literature. Osteoblastoma may be misdiagnosed as an osteosarcoma, which is a well-understood malignant bone tumor. Owing to poor prognosis, animals diagnosed with osteosarcoma are not always treated. In the present case, we diagnosed the tumor as aggressive osteoblastoma on the basis of macroscopic, microscopic, radiographic, and immunohistologic findings. The patient was treated via resections of the osteoblastoma and lived without metastasis for 3 years. This is the first reported case of aggressive feline osteoblastoma of the cervical vertebrae and will be useful for diagnosing and managing aggressive osteoblastoma.

Background/aim: We aimed to evaluate wheezing, bronchial asthma (BA), and atopy in premature infants at 2 years of age via a crosssectional study. Materials and methods: Premature infants at <37 weeks of gestational age (GA) were assessed for atopy by skin-prick test and serum immunoglobulin E level at 2 years of age. The family's and infant's histories of allergy, BA, atopy, and wheezing were obtained by questionnaire and from hospital records. Results: There were 98 infants, with mean birth weight (BW) 1517.4 ± 486.5 g and GA 30.8 ± 2.9 weeks. The frequencies of wheezing, asthma, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) were 32.7%, 16.3%, and 14.3%, respectively. Skin-prick tests were positive for 11 subjects, with allergy to cereals for 7 infants, egg for 3, and peanut for 1. Wheezing was related to GA, BW, respiratory distress syndrome, mechanical ventilation, sepsis, asphyxia, smoking, antenatal steroid, BA, palivizumab prophylaxis, number of people in the household, and duration of hospitalization (P < 0.05). Wheezing was negatively correlated to GA. Family history of BA, smoking, and number of people in the household were linked to BA (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Wheezing was related to degree of premature birth, but BA was linked to BA in the family and smoking. Increased gestation should improve the infant's respiratory health up to 2 years of age.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Aluminum phosphide (AlP) is commonly used as a fumigant in developing countries. Induction of oxidative stress is one of the most important mechanisms of its toxicity. In this regard, and considering that there is no specific antidote for its treatment, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of vitamin E in the treatment of acute AlP poisoning. Materials and methods: This was a clinical trial on acute AlP poisoned patients. All patients received supportive treatment. In addition, the treatment group received vitamin E (400 mg/BD/IM). Level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity of plasma were …

Background/aim: Renal oxidative stress occurs in ureteral obstructions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the antioxidant and antiischemic agent trimetazidine (TMZ) on oxidative stress following ureteral obstruction. Materials and methods: Ten groups were established. Sham groups were checked as controls after 1 and 3 weeks. The other 8 groups had partial or complete ureteral obstruction while receiving or not receiving trimetazidine (TMZ) at 5 mg/kg daily and were evaluated after either 1 week or 3 weeks. Creatinine and cystatin C measurements were performed in the serum. Malondialdehyde, myeloperoxidase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activity were measured …

Background/aim: The protective effects of prostaglandin (PG) analogs on ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) have been well documented; however, comparative studies are lacking. The aim of the present study was to determine whether iloprost or alprostadil is more effective in preventing muscle I/R injury. Materials and methods: Thirty-two rats were divided into four groups (n = 8): sham, control, IL (I/R + iloprost), and AL (I/R + alprostadil). I/R was induced by a tourniquet in the hindlimb for 3 h/3 h. The IL and AL groups received iloprost (0.5 ng kg-1 min-1) and alprostadil (0.05 μg kg-1 min-1) during reperfusion, respectively. After 6 …
