To assess clinical features, etiology, and complications in term and near-term newborns who received exchange transfusion. Materials and methods: Infants with >=35 gestational weeks admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit in the first 30 days of life and underwent exchange transfusion due to severe hyperbilirubinemia between 2002 and 2008 were included. Clinical features, etiology of hyperbilirubinemia, and complications of exchange transfusion were assessed. Results: Exchange transfusion was performed 86 times in a total of 73 patients. After the first description of a CCHF outbreak in Turkey, tick bites became an increasing cause of visits to health-care facilities. In this study, we evaluated tick bites in a CCHF endemic region. Materials and methods: The study included cases of tick bites that were referred to 2 hospitals in Erzurum between June and October 2008. All cases were followed-up for 10 days for the results of CCHF. Results: During the study period, 161 patients were admitted for a tick bite. The majority (56.3%) were farmers and housewives. To determine our setting's IDAI rates, infecting microorganisms, and their resistance patterns to achieve standardization and make comparisons among other Turkish and developed country hospitals all over the world. Materials and methods: The numbers of total patient days, ventilator days, central catheter days and, urinary catheter days in the ICUs were recorded and IDAI rates were calculated. Clinical specimens were obtained from patients, cultivated at appropriate culture media, and infecting microorganisms and resistance patterns were determined. Brucellosis is a prevalent disease in Turkey. The object of this study was to assess the findings in brucellosis cases with and without complications. Materials and methods: A total of 324 patients diagnosed with brucellosis between 1999 and 2005 were reviewed retrospectively. The diagnosis of brucellosis was established serologically and/or by positivite blood culture. Epidemiologic features, clinical symptoms, and laboratory findings of the patients were assessed in both complicated and noncomplicated brucellosis cases by univariate and multivariate analysis. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and affecting factors of Hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg), hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV), anti human immunodeficiency virus (anti-HIV), and VDRL in blood donors in Mersin. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive study. All blood centers in Mersin were included in the study. The medical records of 30,716 blood donors were evaluated. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, linear-by-linear association test, and the Pearson chi-square significance test. To investigate the association between the paraoxonase 1 (PON1) c.163T>A and c.575A>G polymorphisms and coronary artery disease (CAD), and whether specific polymorphisms in the PON1 gene are associated with CAD in the southeastern Turkish population. Many different genetic and clinical factors have been identified as causes or contributors to atherosclerosis. This cross sectional study was conducted to assess various clinicopathological parameters in 1785 patients from various regions of Punjab. Materials and methods: These cases were collected from Gulab Devi Chest Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan. The data were collected from all patients during a period of 2 years, from June 2006 to June 2008. All the cases were diagnosed after routine hematoxylin and eosin staining. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has an important place in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. This study discusses the outcomes of 3664 ERCPs in 3136 patients over the course of 10 years. Materials and methods: The records of 3664 ERCPs of 3136 patients, performed between January 2000 and January 2010, were retrospectively evaluated. Results: The age range was 4-94 years (mean: 55.1 years), and 1816 patients (57.9%) were female. To compare the clinical and the functional efficiency of 2 surgical methods that are used in open primary repair of acute Achilles tendon ruptures: one that utilizes the augmentation of the plantaris tendon and one that does not. To investigate the seroprevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in people living in 2 different climatic regions and to evaluate the co-seroprevalence rate of A. phagocytophilum with Borrelia burgdorferi. Sinop and Tokat provinces, both in the middle Black Sea region of Turkey, have distinct climatic features. Materials and methods: In 2006-2007, serum samples were collected from people living in rural areas of Tokat and Sivas, and anti-A. phagocytophilum IgG antibodies were explored by the IFA method. Nutritional vitamin B12 deficiency is common in developing and underdeveloped countries and has a wide variety of neurological presentations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the neurological characteristics and laboratory results of infants with vitamin B12 deficiency. Materials and methods: A total of 42 infants were included in this study. All patients were evaluated for clinical, physical, and neurological abnormalities, and an attempt was made to obtain short-term neurologic follow-up. In childhood, urticarial lesions are sometimes associated with purpura. This form might be identified as atypical, and may also be related to urticarial vasculitis (UV). The aim of this study was to assess the clinicopathologic characteristics of UV in children with atypical urticaria. Materials and methods: Fifteen children with atypical urticaria were evaluated with medical history, physical examination, and laboratory and skin punch biopsy findings. To examine the effect of smoking on normal buccal mucosa cytomorphologically. Materials and methods: Forty individuals aged between 40 and 60, comprising 23 smokers (14 male, 9 female) and 17 and non-smokers (10 male, 7 female), were included in the study. There are several studies on tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) intoxication in the literature; however, there is no specific study on amitriptyline, a specific TCA, intoxication. Materials and methods: Forty adult patients who had been admitted to the emergency department due to suicide attempts with amitriptyline were included. Obesity and risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) are rapidly increasing in children. Therefore, criteria for MS were aimed to be evaluated in obese children (OC). Materials and methods: Anthropometric indices and body composition (bioimpedance) analysis (BIA) were compared in 32 obese and 32 normal-weight children. Biochemical parameters were evaluated in OC. Results of OC with/without MS were compared. Results: Subscapular skinfold thickness (SST) was more sensitive and specific than triceps skinfold thickness in the diagnosis of obesity. To analyze the frequency and distribution of coronary artery risk factors in the city of Rize and its surrounding areas. Materials and methods: This observational study included 452 patients (333 men, 119 women). In addition to demographic characteristics of the patients, conventional risk factors were also recorded. The patients were grouped according to their ages, gender, and electrocardiographic characteristics. Results: The mean age of participants was 63 ± 13 years and 74% were male. To compare the anesthetic effects of nitrous oxide, isoflurane, and halothane on hemodynamic stability and recovery characteristics in pediatric patients during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and methods: The present study includes 60 ASA I-II children aged 1-12 years undergoing MRI. After endotracheal intubation, patients were randomly assigned into 1 of 3 anesthetic groups. This study primarily investigated the effect of infusion rate on blood pressure changes. Secondarily induction time and induction dose were studied.
