The Relation Of Dietary Patterns To Future Survival, Health, And Cardiovascular Events In Older Adults, Paula Diehr Dec 2003

The Relation Of Dietary Patterns To Future Survival, Health, And Cardiovascular Events In Older Adults, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

BACKGROUND: There have been few long-term follow-up studies of older adults who follow different dietary patterns. METHODS: We cluster-analyzed data on dietary fat, fiber, protein, carbohydrate, and calorie consumption from the U.S. Cardiovascular Health Study (mean age=73), and examined the relationship of the dietary clusters to outcomes 10 years later. RESULTS: The five clusters were named "Healthy diet" (relatively high in fiber and carbohydrate and low in fat), "Unhealthy diet" (relatively high in protein and fat, relatively low in carbohydrates and fiber); "High Calorie," "Low Calorie," and "Low 4," which was distinguished by higher alcohol consumption. The clusters were strongly …

Cd43 Modulates Severity And Onset Of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis., Thandi M. Onami, M. L. Ford, A. Sperling, R. Ahmed, B. D. Evavold

Thandi M. Onami

Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a mouse model of multiple sclerosis characterized by infiltration of activated CD4(+) T lymphocytes into tissues of the CNS. This study investigated the role of CD43 in the induction and progression of EAE. Results demonstrate that CD43-deficient mice have reduced and delayed clinical and histological disease severity relative to CD43(+/+) mice. This reduction was characterized by decreased CD4(+) T cell infiltration of the CNS of CD43(-/-) mice but similar numbers of Ag-specific T cells in the periphery, suggesting a defect in T cell trafficking to the CNS. The absence of CD43 also affected cytokine production, …

Background: Recently, researchers have been using mass spectroscopy to study cancer. For use of proteomics spectra in a clinical setting, stringent quality-control procedures will be needed.

Methods: We pooled samples of nipple aspirate fluid from healthy breasts and breasts with cancer to prepare a control sample. Aliquots of the control sample were used on two spots on each of three IMAC ProteinChip® arrays (Ciphergen Biosystems, Inc.) on 4 successive days to generate 24 SELDI spectra. In 36 subsequent experiments, the control sample was applied to two spots of each ProteinChip array, and the resulting spectra were analyzed to determine how …

Imputation Of Missing Longitudinal Data: A Comparison Of Methods, Paula Diehr, Jean Mundahl Engels Oct 2003

Imputation Of Missing Longitudinal Data: A Comparison Of Methods, Paula Diehr, Jean Mundahl Engels

Paula Diehr

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Missing information is inevitable in longitudinal studies, and can result in biased estimates and a loss of power. One approach to this problem is to impute the missing data to yield a more complete data set. Our goal was to compare the performance of 14 methods of imputing missing data on depression, weight, cognitive functioning, and self-rated health in a longitudinal cohort of older adults. METHODS: We identified situations where a person had a known value following one or more missing values, and treated the known value as a "missing value." This "missing value" was imputed using …

Wavelet-Based Nonparametric Modeling Of Hierarchical Functions In Colon Carcinogenesis., Jeffrey S. Morris, Marina Vannucci, Philip J. Brown, Raymond J. Carroll

Jeffrey S. Morris

In this article we develop new methods for analyzing the data from an experiment using rodent models to investigate the effect of type of dietary fat on O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase (MGMT), an important biomarker in early colon carcinogenesis. The data consist of observed profiles over a spatial variable contained within a two-stage hierarchy, a structure that we dub hierarchical functional data. We present a new method providing a unified framework for modeling these data, simultaneously yielding estimates and posterior samples for mean, individual, and subsample-level profiles, as well as covariance parameters at the various hierarchical levels. Our method is nonparametric in that …

The Location Of The Mental Foramen In A Selected Malay Population, W.C. Ngeow, Y. Yuzawati Sep 2003

The Location Of The Mental Foramen In A Selected Malay Population, W.C. Ngeow, Y. Yuzawati

Wei Cheong Ngeow

Knowledge of the position of the mental foramen is important both when administering regional anesthesia and performing periapical surgery in the mental region of the mandible. This study determines the position of the mental foramen in a selected Malay population. One hundred and sixty nine panoramic radiographs of Malay patients retrieved from a minor oral surgery waiting list were selected to identify the normal range for the position of the mental foramen. The foramen was not included in the study if there was any mandibular tooth missing between the lower left and right first molars (36-46). The findings indicated the …

Trajectories Of Health For Older Adults Over Time: Accounting Fully For Death, Paula Diehr Sep 2003

Trajectories Of Health For Older Adults Over Time: Accounting Fully For Death, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

The process of healthy aging can best be described by plotting the trajectory of health-related variables over time. Unfortunately, graphs including data only from survivors may be misleading because they may confuse patterns of mortality with patterns of change in health. Two approaches for creating graphs that account for death in such situations are 1) to incorporate a category or value for death into the longitudinal health variable and 2) to measure time in years before death or some other event. The first approach has been applied to self-rated health (excellent to poor) and the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). …

Accounting For Deaths In Longitudinal Studies Using The Sf-36: The Performance Of The Physical Component Scale Of The Short Form 36-Item Health Survey And The Pctd, Paula Diehr Sep 2003

Accounting For Deaths In Longitudinal Studies Using The Sf-36: The Performance Of The Physical Component Scale Of The Short Form 36-Item Health Survey And The Pctd, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

BACKGROUND: Commonly used measures such as the Physical Component Scale of the Short Form 36-item health survey (PCS) are undefined at death, limiting longitudinal analyses to survivors, a healthier cohort that cannot be identified prospectively, and that might have had little change in health. One proposed approach is to transform the PCS into the Physical Component Transformed, with Deaths included (PCTD), which is the probability of being healthy 1 year later and for which deaths logically have a value of zero. Data missing for other reasons than death have not been considered. OBJECTIVE: To examine the performance of the PCTD, …

Identical Ribosomal Dna Sequence Data From Pfiesteria Piscicida (Dinophyceae) Isolates With Different Toxicity Phenotypes, Torstein Tengs Sep 2003

Identical Ribosomal Dna Sequence Data From Pfiesteria Piscicida (Dinophyceae) Isolates With Different Toxicity Phenotypes, Torstein Tengs

Dr. Torstein Tengs

Complete small subunit ribosomal RNA, internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2, 5.8S, and partial large subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences were generated from multiple isolates of Pfiesteria piscicida. Sequences were derived from isolates that have been shown to be ichthyotoxic as well as isolates that have no history of toxic behavior. All of the sequences generated were identical for the different cultures, and we therefore conclude that differences in toxicity seen between isolates of P. piscicida are linked to factors other than genetic strain variation detectable by ribosomal gene sequence analyses.

Implementing Library Service Agreements: The Experience Of Australian Health Libraries, Lindsay Harris, Sue Rockliff

Lindsay Harris

There is little in the published literature on creating and implementing service agreements in libraries as distinct from reports on the outsourcing and contracting out of discrete functions or entire services. This paper examines the role of service agreements in Australian health libraries and their operation in libraries. Aspects considered are the definition of service agreements, what they are and are not, how they are developed, the scope and contents of such agreements and areas likely to cause difficulties. The experiences of Australian health libraries in the implementation of service agreements and key features in their success or failure are …

Geographical And Temporal Distribution Of Human Giardiasis In Ontario, Canada., Agricola Odoi, S W. Martin, P Michel, J Holt, D Middleton, J Wilson

Agricola Odoi

BACKGROUND: Giardia is the most frequently identified intestinal parasite in North America. Although information on geographical distribution of giardiasis is critical in identifying communities at high risk, little has been done in this area. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the geographical and temporal distribution of human giardiasis in Ontario in order to identify possible high risk areas and seasons. Two spatial scales of analyses and two disease measures were used with a view to identifying the best of each in assessing geographical patterns of giardiasis in Ontario. Global Moran's I and Moran Local Indicators of Spatial …

Distinct luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR) protein variants exist due to the posttranslational modifications. Besides ovaries, LHR immunoreactivity (LHRI) was also found in other tissues, such as the brain, fallopian tube, endometrium, trophoblast and resident tissue macrophages. The 3B5 mouse monoclonal antibody was raised against purified rat LHR. In rat, porcine and human ovaries, the 3B5 identified six distinct LHR bands migrating at approximately 92, 80, 68, 59, 52 and 48 kDa. Characteristic LHRI was detected in rat, human and porcine corpora lutea. During cellular differentiation, subcellular LHR distribution changed from none to granular cytoplasmic, perinuclear, surface, nuclear and no staining. …

A Comprehensive Approach To The Analysis Of Maldi-Tof Proteomics Spectra From Serum Samples., Keith A. Baggerly, Jeffrey S. Morris, Jing Wang, David Gold, Lian-Chun Xiao, Kevin R. Coombes

Jeffrey S. Morris

For our analysis of the data from the First Annual Proteomics Data Mining Conference, we attempted to discriminate between 24 disease spectra (group A) and 17 normal spectra (group B). First, we processed the raw spectra by (i) correcting for additive sinusoidal noise (periodic on the time scale) affecting most spectra, (ii) correcting for the overall baseline level, (iii) normalizing, (iv) recombining fractions, and (v) using variable- width windows for data reduction. Also, we identified a set of polymeric peaks (at multiples of 180.6 Da) that is present in several normal spectra (B1–B8). After data processing, we found the intensities …

Background: Of all the vital signs, only Respiratory Rate (RR) is still measured clinically. The authors’ experience at multiple centers is that RR recorded in triage shows low variability and accuracy.

Objectives: To assess the method, duration, variability and accuracy of triage nurses’ measurements of RR (RNRR). To compare this with electronic measurement of RR (ERR) using transthoracic impedance plethysmography (TTIP), …

Educating The Public About Stroke: Role In Improving Outcomes, Richard N. Bradley May 2003

Educating The Public About Stroke: Role In Improving Outcomes, Richard N. Bradley

Richard N Bradley

Acute stroke affects large numbers of people worldwide. It causes significant morbidity and mortality. Data support the hypothesis that the public is not familiar with either the risk factors or the signs of stroke. Educating the public about stroke may result in a lower incidence of the disease as individuals modify their risk factors, and in improved outcomes as a result of reductions in delays to treatment. There is clear and convincing evidence that reducing delays to treatment of patients with acute stroke results in improved outcomes. Public education programs should be broad-based, tailored to individual audiences, and carry a …

Bayesian Shrinkage Estimation Of The Relative Abundance Of Mrna Transcripts Using Sage, Jeffrey S. Morris, Keith A. Baggerly, Kevin R. Coombes Mar 2003

Bayesian Shrinkage Estimation Of The Relative Abundance Of Mrna Transcripts Using Sage, Jeffrey S. Morris, Keith A. Baggerly, Kevin R. Coombes

Jeffrey S. Morris

Serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) is a technology for quantifying gene expression in biological tissue that yields count data that can be modeled by a multinomial distribution with two characteristics: skewness in the relative frequencies and small sample size relative to the dimension. As a result of these characteristics, a given SAGE sample may fail to capture a large number of expressed mRNA species present in the tissue. Empirical estimators of mRNA species’ relative abundance effectively ignore these missing species, and as a result tend to overestimate the abundance of the scarce observed species comprising a vast majority of …

Primary And Secondary Immunocompetence In Mixed Allogeneic Chimeras, Thandi M. Onami, M. A. Williams, A. B. Adams, M. B. Walsh, N. Shirasugi, T. C. Pearson, R. Ahmed, C. P. Larsen

Thandi M. Onami

Targeted disruption of T cell costimulatory pathways, particularly CD28 and CD40, has allowed for the development of minimally myeloablative strategies for the induction of mixed allogeneic chimerism and donor-specific tolerance across full MHC barriers. In this study we analyze in depth the ability of mixed allogeneic chimeras in two strain combinations to mount effective host-restricted and donor-restricted antiviral CD4 and CD8 responses, as well as the impact of development of mixed chimerism on the maintenance of pre-existing memory populations. While antiviral CD8 responses in mixed chimeras following acute viral infection with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus Armstrong or vaccinia virus are largely …

Expression And Localization Of Estrogen Receptor-Alpha Protein In Normal And Abnormal Term Placentae And Stimulation Of Trophoblast Differentiation By Estradiol, A Bukovsky, Maria Cekanova Ms, Rndr, Phd, Mr Caudle, J Wimalasena, Js Foster, Dc Henley, Rf Elder

Maria Cekanova MS, RNDr, PhD

Estrogens play an important role in the regulation of placental function, and 17-beta-estradiol (E2) production rises eighty fold during human pregnancy. Although term placenta has been found to specifically bind estrogens, cellular localization of estrogen receptor alpha (ER-alpha) in trophoblast remains unclear. We used western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry with h-151 and ID5 monoclonal antibodies to determine the expression and cellular localization of ER-alpha protein in human placentae and cultured trophoblast cells. Western blot analysis revealed a ~65 kDa ER-alpha band in MCF-7 breast carcinoma cells (positive control). A similar band was detected in five normal term placentae exhibiting strong …

Frontiers Of Existential Humanistic Psychotherapy: Preserving The Human Element In Cyberspace, Paul Murray Ph.D.,R.Psych.

Dr. Paul Murray

The internet has brought a vast new frontier into our lives, opening up easy access to previously unimagined possibilities as well as presenting us with many, as yet, incomprehensible complexities of operating our lives in cyberspace. Psychotherapy itself is confronted with new opportunities as it has moved from the tradition of the office, to the telephone, to email, and now to the Internet. Video-therapy is here. But how does psychotherapy fit into this new realm? What is the value of applying psychotherapy in this technological forum and what are the limitations of a psychotherapeutic approach via the internet? Can the …

Peer Rejection And Social Information-Processing Factors In The Development Of Aggressive Behavior Problems In Children, Reid G. Fontaine, Kenneth A. Dodge, Jennifer E. Lansford, Virginia Salzer Burks, John E. Bates, Gregory S. Pettit, Joseph M. Price

Reid G. Fontaine

The relation between social rejection and growth in antisocial behavior was investigated. In Study 1,259 boys and girls (34% African American) were followed from Grades 1 to 3 (ages 6-8 years) to Grades 5 to 7 (ages 10-12 years). Early peer rejection predicted growth in aggression. In Study 2,585 boys and girls (16% African American) were followed from kindergarten to Grade 3 (ages 5-8 years), and findings were replicated. Furthermore, early aggression moderated the effect of rejection, such that rejection exacerbated antisocial development only among children initially disposed toward aggression. In Study 3, social information-processing patterns measured in Study 1 …
