Abstract

This study sought to analyze and better understand the different etiologies of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA), to determine the short and long term outcomes for these patients, to review and look for trends within the “code blue” data, and to identify patients who may benefit from an advanced and aggressive cardiopulmonary support system like extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) process. A retrospective study of 182 patient charts and resuscitation records from the years 2011-2012 was completed with patients ranging in age from 24-70 years with a median age of 58. Abstract The success of an initial cardiac surgery promotes longer survival rates among patients who may live long enough to require further surgical intervention. Unfortunately these reoperations are associated with higher risks. Retrospective analysis is successful in identifying risk factors that promote better patient stratification and surgical management. The Lehigh Valley Health Network has a high volume of reoperation records that can be converted into a microcomputer database on the institutional level. Nosocomial pneumonia in trauma patients is a significant source of resource utilization and mortality. We have previously described increased rates of pneumonia in male trauma patients in a single institution study. In that study, female trauma patients had a lower incidence of postinjury pneumonia but a higher relative risk for mortality when they did develop pneumonia. The aim of this study was to determine if split-thickness skin grafts could be successfully used for closure of foot and ankle wounds in diabetic patients. The authors retrospectively reviewed the charts of 100 consecutive patients who underwent a soft tissue surgical reconstruction with split-thickness skin grafts to their foot and/or ankle in our institution from 2005 to 2008. After application of inclusion criteria, 83 eligible charts remained. Of the 83 patients, 54 (65%) healed uneventfully, 23 (28%) required regrafting, and 6 (7%) had a complication resolved with conservative management. All patients had a successful surgical outcome, defined as having …

BACKGROUND: Preclinical data support further investigation of ascorbic acid in pancreatic cancer. There are currently insufficient safety data in human subjects, particularly when ascorbic acid is combined with chemotherapy. METHODS AND FINDINGS: 14 subjects with metastatic stage IV pancreatic cancer were recruited to receive an eight week cycle of intravenous ascorbic acid (three infusions per week), using a dose escalation design, along with standard treatment of gemcitabine and erlotinib. Of 14 recruited subjects enrolled, nine completed the study (three in each dosage tier). There were fifteen non-serious adverse events and eight serious adverse events, all likely related to progression of …
