The Mindfulness Minute For Caregiver Wellbeing, Veronica Silva, Trisha Saul
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Purpose {What): Research has shown a correlation between stress and job burnout. The Minute Project was developed as a simple tool for caregivers to reduce stress. Our intention is that when stress is reduced, burnout will also be reduced. This tool can be used anytime throughout the day to help our caregivers. Significance {Why): The wellbeing of caregivers in a hospital setting have been challenged over the past 2-3 years. Research has shown that mindfulness practices have an impact on stress levels by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Given the limited education resources, we felt that addressing the stress levels …

"Title: Engaging Nurses with In-Person Multidisciplinary Education
By Caitlin Silva MSN, RN, CCRN, SCRN
Purpose:
This project was to evaluate the impact of “Brain Day,” a targeted multidisciplinary continuing education (CE) class that utilized in-person teaching to promote engagement and satisfaction among nurses in a progressive care unit (PCU).
Relevance/Significance/Background:
Staffing shortages have reached critical levels and educators are tasked to find new ways to increase engagement and satisfaction. Perceived organizational support and workplace relationships have a significant impact on retention. Required contact hours can be used to address staff identified learning needs to keep CE relevant and promote satisfaction. …
Role Of A Multidisciplinary Pulmonary Embolism Response Team And Impact Of Interventional Therapy In The Management Of Patients With Intermediate-High Risk Pulmonary Embolism, Juan N Pulido, Robert Fletcher, Michelle A. Poitevin, Kristina Pratt, Paul P Huang, Eric J Lehr, George P Pappas
Role Of A Multidisciplinary Pulmonary Embolism Response Team And Impact Of Interventional Therapy In The Management Of Patients With Intermediate-High Risk Pulmonary Embolism, Juan N Pulido, Robert Fletcher, Michelle A. Poitevin, Kristina Pratt, Paul P Huang, Eric J Lehr, George P Pappas
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Background: Despite emerging interventional options for pulmonary embolism (PE), the mortality rate for intermediate high-risk PE (IHR-PE) remains high and the optimal therapeutic approach unclear due to a lack of robust outcomes data. We describe the outcomes of patients presenting with IHR-PE managed by a multidisciplinary PERT program with all available reperfusion options.
Methods: This single center retrospective study included EMR data from patients that were a part of the multidisciplinary PERT program from January 2012 to June 2023. PERT was activated if risk of death was intermediate or higher. The simplified pulmonary embolism severity index (sPESI) and Bova score …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Background: Management of Intermediate Risk Pulmonary Embolism (IRPE) remains controversial due to the dynamic nature of the disease and the lack of correlative outcomes with large clot burden. We describe the outcomes of patients presenting with IRPE managed by a multidisciplinary Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT).
Methods: This single center retrospective study included EMR data from patients that were a part of the multidisciplinary PERT program from January 2012 to June 2023. PERT was activated if risk of death was intermediate or higher. The simplified pulmonary embolism severity index (sPESI) and Bova score were used as risk stratification tools. Patients …

Reboot: Resurrecting A Nursing Mentorship Program Post Covid, Cindy Wishon
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
" REBOOT! Resurrecting a Nursing Mentorship Program post COVID Rationale: Mentorship programs have been recognized as beneficial in enhancing nurse retention and professional development as evidenced by PTAP and Magnet recommendations. EBP Question: In two PTAP Certified and Magnet aligned hospitals, can the reimagining of a 1-year Nurse Mentorship Program benefit the participants, compared to non-participants, as evidenced by program engagement, participant satisfaction with their professional role, and retention rates. Literature Search, Appraisal & Synthesis: EBSCO search including terms mentorship, nursing, and program implementation was conducted. Two Level 1 Systematic Reviews, as well as several Level 6 studies, both qualitative …

Improving Emergency Department Belongings Inventory Electronic Medical Record Documentation Rates Background: Electronic Medical Record (EMR) education and training for RNs should be multifaceted and targeted to the RN clinical workflow. Input from direct care RNs is essential to ensure EMR education is relevant and effective. Shared Governance at a community hospital identified quality and safety concerns among inpatient RNs. RNs reported that belongings inventories were not consistently documented in the EMR for Emergency Department (ED) admissions. Hospital policy requires belongings inventory EMR documentation for all admitted patients. An audit of charts for ED admissions over three months revealed only 5% …

Poster: "Improving High Reliability Organization (Hro) Education, Culture, & Engagement Through Video ", Francis Khan, Alison Branson
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Background: While Providence began the HRO journey in 2015, the Northern California region didn’t launch until March 2022. While most leaders and caregivers have been trained, several still have difficulty remembering and applying the HRO principles and tools. The HRO Vlog provides a series of short videos that not only reinforce the various high reliability principles, but also provides real-life stories of caregivers who have successfully applied HRO principles and tools in their daily work. Purpose: According to Press Ganey’s Virtuous Cycle Model (Fig A.), safety and engagement the drivers of HRO. When safety and engagement operate in tandem, benefits …

Infusion Nurses’ Personal Protective Equipment Use While Handling Chemotherapy Drugs Purpose: To describe perceived barriers, perceived risks, interpersonal influence (modeling and norms), perceived conflict of interest, and organizational influences and select demographics related to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use for out-patient, oncology infusion nurses. Background: The proper use of PPE should be common practice among nurses who administer chemotherapy. However, despite training and education, many studies have demonstrated that infusion nurses’ PPE adherence is as low as 50%. Improper PPE use can increase exposure to chemotherapy and has potential adverse health effects including fertility issues and risks of cancer. Few …

Background: Most Medical-Device Related Pressure Injuries develop when skin or underlying tissues are subjected to a sustained pressure or shear from medical devices. Dressings have shown substantial biomechanical effectiveness in alleviating facial tissue deformations and stresses by providing localized cushioning to the tissue at risk. Our units (DSU and SDU) provides for the monitoring and care of patients with moderate or potentially severe physiologic instability …

Orientation Materials: Impact Of Transitioning From Paper To An Electronic Format, Megan Bowles, Abby Lust, Teresa Rangel, Tobi Bryan
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Background:
In one region including 4 hospitals, acute care nurses historically met with professional development practitioners (PDP) and received binders containing printed, specialty-specific policies and a competency checklist (required to be signed and returned to the nurse leader) upon new hire or transfer. Creating physical orientation packets is costly, time-consuming, and restricts the ability to share appropriate orientation materials in the event of a PDP sick call. Real-time communication between the orientee, preceptor, PDP, and nurse leader regarding status of the competency checklist cannot occur with a physical binder. Providing electronic onboarding materials is a potential solution.

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Background: In the United States 700,000 to 1,000,000 people fall in the hospital annually, 1/3 result in injury. One single fall averages $14,000, resulting in an increase in hospital length of stay and burden on hospital budget. In St. Joseph Hospital of Orange, from calendar year 2019 to 2020, there was an increase in falls from 178 to 185 falls, despite the use of a telesitter. At time of data collection, 12 telesitter cameras were initiated after a fall. An investigation was deemed necessary to determine the cause of the increase and the factors related to patient falls.
